Pyramid/Scorpion Trail

Just minutes away! One of the less-traveled hikes we highly recommend.

Pyramid Mountain Trailhead

A hidden gem! This hike is just south of the house on the south side of 89A. It’s a quick drive past the Sedona Performing Arts Center and high school. Make sure when you Google or Apple map these hikes, you’re adding the word “trailhead”. Otherwise you’ll get weird routes to the actual mountain - not directions to the trailheads! Both times we’ve hiked this trailhead, there were very few people and we were able to get a parking spot. It’s definitely a lesser-known location, so you can avoid the crowds like those at Devil’s Bridge, Boynton and Bell Rock!

We like to hike this trail counter clockwise in the afternoon. You’ll get nice views all around, but the best are to the east with the sunset on the red rocks. The hike is 2.1 miles and you can expect it to take about an hour or so. Not much elevation change, so it’s perfect for beginner hikes, or a quick sunset hike. We often do “two-a-days” as we like to call them. A long hike in the morning followed by a quick evening hike like this after an early dinner!

The hike starts on Scorpion trail to the right. Very easy to follow path with greenery on both sides. The view to the west is unique with hillside rather than red rocks. The path takes you further west from the Pyramid before you turn left (south then looping east) off the trail to join Pyramid Trail. As you turn east the path is still easy to follow. If you are hiking at sunset, you’ll start to see some great views off to the east. You’ll also hike up close to the side of Pyramid - getting closer than you’re able to on most other hikes.

We only did this hike because we wanted something quick and around 2 miles or less…. but we were surprised at how much we liked it! We actually started a little later than planned and wanted to get back before it got dark, so we ended up jogging the last half mile or so. The trail was perfect for that - which means it’s also a great option for kids, those that don’t want lots of vertical, and anyone who wants an easy, but fun hike!

Definitely one we recommend!

As with any hike, make sure you have water, sun protection (hat and sunglasses) and sunblock. We always wear hiking shoes too! In the spring and fall, 70’s in the sun can be warm, so we like light layers. In the summer heat, hydrate!! This is a nice, short hike that should take around an hour at a quick pace.

When we hike, we like to take a picture of the trailhead map at the beginning of the hike, but also screenshot what the hike looks like on Google Maps. The aerial view on Google maps almost always is more exact. In most places around Sedona (including Pyramid Trail), you’ll still get cell service on your hike. This means your little dot on Google maps will move along the trail on your phone and you can double check your progress!
