Ohio1.07k Taken 8 December 1979 during the launch of the Phoenix (SSN-702).
Ohio (SSBN-726) is in the water, the Michigan (SSBN-727) is on her starboard side out of the water, and the Florida (SSBN-728) is partially visible (starboard/aft) in the large assembly building. The Boston (SSN-703) is barely visible just inside the open bay doors in the small assembly building closest to the starboard side of the Florida (SSBN-728) and the Phoenix is being launched. I believe that the City of Corpus Christi (SSN-705) is barely visible behind the closed bay doors to the port of the Phoenix.

Giant Shadow is a Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA)/Naval Submarine Forces experiment to test the capabilities of the Navy's future guided missile submarines. Florida is one of four Ohio Class (SSBN-726-743) ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) being converted to guided missile submarines (SSGN). Giant Shadow is the first experiment under the "Sea Trial" initiative of the Chief of Naval Operations' Sea Power 21 vision and the first in a series of experiments before converting and overhauling the four SSBNs to SSGNs. The SSGNs will have the capability to support and launch up to 154 Tomahawk missiles, a significant increase in capacity as compared to other platforms. USN photo courtesy of news.navy.mil.

As the second of four submarines to be converted to SSGN, the nuclear-powered submarine will have the capability to launch up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, conduct sustained special forces operations, support up to 102 special operations forces (SOF) personnel for short durations or 66 SOF personnel for sustained operations and provide 67 percent operational availability forward deployed in support of combatant mission requirements. Florida669kThe Lightship Portsmouth, formerly Lightship #101 was built in 1915 and was first stationed off Cape Charles, VA at the Charles light station. She served there until 1924, when she was moved to the Obverfalls lightstation off the Delaware Bay. She served at that station from 1925 until 1951, when she was moved to several stations in New England until her retirement in 1964. She was later moved to Portsmouth, VA, and made into a landlocked museum. She was renamed the Portsmouth as is the custom to take on the name of the station where "standing duty", even though there has never been an actual Portsmouth aids to navigation lightstation.
In this capacity she bears witness to the guided missile submarine Florida (SSGN-728) as she departs Norfolk Naval Shipyard on 25 March 2006 en route to sea trials following conversion from SSBN to SSGN.

Captain Litherland then assumed command of the Pre-Commissioning Unit for Texas (SSN-775) in November 2003 and oversaw her construction, testing and initial sea trials, culminating in her commissioning in 2006. From November 2006 to November 2008 Captain Litherland served as Commanding Officer of Florida (SSGN-728) (GOLD), completing her post conversion Strike and Special Warfare certifications and conducting the maiden SSGN deployment to the Indian Ocean in support of the Global War on Terror. Florida200kThe guided-missile submarine Florida (SSGN-728) departs Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay 26 April 2008 for its first operational deployment after undergoing conversion from a ballistic-missile capable submarine (SSBN) to a guided-missile submarine (SSGN). The normal patrol for an SSBN is about three months; however, as an SSGN, Florida will be deployed for approximately 12 months. Florida departed with her blue crew, led by Capt. William Traub. The blue crew will rotate duties every three months with the gold crew, led by Capt. John Litherland, during the deployment. The use of two crews allows Florida to have a greater forward presence and the conversion from ballistic missiles to guided missiles allows for greater payload capacity and mission flexibility.
