„Brussels is studying how European governments can sell weapons as easily as the Americans do. In the wake of the Ukraine war, EU governments have significantly boosted military spending — but the juicy arms deals have often gone to U.S. defense contractors at the expense of European companies. In order to claw back the initiative, the European Commission is raising the prospect of copying the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) scheme — a system where the Pentagon does the heavy lifting in securing arms sales by using the combined muscle of America's industrial might and the political advantages of ties with Washington.“ https://lnkd.in/eW-x7UBt

„Days of clashes between demonstrators and police in French-controlled New Caledonia are fueled by foreign interference, Paris declared on Thursday, as local officials vowed to restore order in the South Pacific territory. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said that the violence, which has claimed the lives of three indigenous Kanak people and a police officer, had been actively supported by Azerbaijan. “This isn’t a fantasy,” he insisted on Thursday. “I regret that some of the separatists have made a deal with Azerbaijan.” However, “even if there are attempts at interference, … France is sovereign on its own territory, and so much the better,” he added. Speaking to POLITICO, a French intelligence official granted anonymity to discuss sensitive issues of national security, said that “we’ve detected activities from Russia and Azerbaijan in New Caledonia for weeks, even a few months. They’re pushing the narrative of France being a colonialist state.” Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Aykhan Hajizada strongly rejected claims the country was behind the unrest. “Instead of accusing Azerbaijan of allegedly supporting pro-independence protests in New Caledonia, the Minister of the Interior of France should focus on his country’s failed policy towards the overseas territories that led to such protests,” he said. Relations between France and Azerbaijan have hit rock bottom in recent years as a result of French military and political support for the South Caucasus country’s neighbor and historic rival Armenia — a situation only intensified by Baku’s military seizure of the ethnic Armenian region of Nagorno-Karabakh last year.“ https://lnkd.in/e-2X8JRQ

„Russian state actors hacked into the Hungarian Foreign Ministry’s computer network compromising internal correspondence and even a secure network that transmits classified information. The recurring cyberattacks over the past decade were kept quiet by the Orbán government, and have not been successfully countered. With the help of internal documents and background interviews, Direkt36 exposes Russian cyber espionage against Hungary’s MFA.“ https://lnkd.in/eV--x9qD

„The cyber espionage group known as Mustang Panda introduced malware over the past five months to gain remote access to “computer systems belonging to cargo shipping companies based in Norway, Greece, and the Netherlands, including some that appeared to be aboard the cargo ships themselves,” according to the Slovakia-based cyber security firm ESET. The report came as top U.K. and U.S. officials on Tuesday warned of a growing cybersecurity threat from China, particularly to critical infrastructure. According to the report, Mustang Panda, which has been accused of carrying out espionage against governments and other organizations across Asia and more recently in Europe, has used similar malware tools in previous spying campaigns. The “remote access trojan” type of malware allows an attacker to gain full access to a device and issue commands, after breaking in through an email, a malicious website, vulnerable software or an unprotected machine. It was the first time evidence had emerged that a China-linked cyber espionage group was focusing on commercial shipping, researchers said. “China has built an advanced set of cyber capabilities and is taking advantage of a growing commercial ecosystem of hacking outfits and data brokers at its disposal,” Anne Keast-Butler said. “China poses a genuine and increasing cyber risk to the U.K.” In a speech at the same conference, Harry Coker, White House national cyber director, said China’s cyber spying meant that Beijing had the ability to disrupt and damage America’s civilian infrastructure. “In a crisis or conflict scenario, China could use their pre-positioned cyber capabilities to wreak havoc in civilian infrastructure and deter U.S. military action,” Coker said. The Biden administration has accused China of carrying out a massive espionage effort known as “Volt Typhoon” that penetrated an array of critical infrastructure. China has “moved on” from intellectual property theft, Natalie Pittore of the National Security Agency said at a conference panel discussion.“ https://lnkd.in/eN_JNpQV

Unrest in France‘s Pacific territory: „Some locals say they have been too scared to leave their homes as protests over changes to the voting law grew into deadly riots. The pro-independence, largely Indigenous protests were sparked by planned changes to voting laws that will allow more long-term French residents of the islands to vote in local elections. The move has sparked fears among the indigenous Kanak population that their influence will be further diluted. The protests turned violent this week as the bill was voted on in the French parliament. The reforms must still be approved by a joint sitting of both houses of the French parliament. In the wake of the violence, Paris has deployed troops to the French territory’s ports and international airport, banned TikTok and imposed a state of emergency. Four people, including a police officer, have died in the clashes and hundreds have been wounded.“

„A new stealthy Chinese corvette or light frigate has ostensibly made its maiden voyage. The ship's design has some broad similarities to Sweden's radar-evading Visby class corvettes, including a main gun that sits concealed inside low observable cupola when not in use, but is larger by all indications. How fast work on this vessel seems to be progressing also speaks to the scale and scope of China's shipbuilding capacity, something that presents huge challenges for even the country's most well-equipped competitors, principally the United States. Just two weeks ago, China's first indigenously-designed carrier, which features catapults and other major enhancements, also set out on its inaugural sea trials. In addition to the concealed main gun on the bow, the picture that appeared online last November looked to show a vertical launch system array in front of the main superstructure and a flight deck at the stern. From what we have seen to date, the ship otherwise has a design that puts a premium on low-observable (stealthy) features. These include an integrated mast structure atop the bridge and a lack of major aerials and radar-reflecting fixtures on its superstructure or deck. Smooth planar and faceted surfaces that are inward-canted above the ship's waist dominate its design. This is similar to a tumblehome-like configuration which gets progressively narrower above the waterline, but in this case, the lower hull remains outwardly flared. Sweden's stealthy Visbly class corvettes and the U.S. Navy's Zumwalt class stealth destroyers feature forms of tumblehome designs. Size-wise, Shugart has estimated the length of the new stealthy warship to be around 97 meters (318 feet) based on comparisons to non-stealthy Type 056 corvettes — NATO reporting name Jiangdao class — also seen in the relevant satellite imagery below. The baseline Type 056 is known to be 90 meters (295 feet) long, as well as having a displacement of around 1,500 tons. Liaoning Shipyard has also produced Type 056s in the past.“ https://lnkd.in/eqzt7BWp

„A UK Border Force officer and an immigration enforcement investigator were charged today with spying for Hong Kong in a landmark case. Chi Leung Wai, 38, who works at Heathrow Airport for UK Border Force and volunteers as a special constable for the City of London Police is accused of allegedly carrying out surveillance and hostile reconnaissance on pro-democracy activists in the UK for the Hong Kong intelligence service. He was charged today alongside former Royal Marine, Matthew Trickett, 37, who currently works as an immigration enforcement officer for the Home Office. A third man, Chung Biu Yuen, 63, a retired Hong Kong police officer now employed as a trade official, is also accused of allegedly assisting the Hong Kong intelligence service. In an extraordinary espionage case which is the first of its kind, the defendants are alleged to have carried out surveillance operations in the UK on behalf of Hong Kong authorities, allegedly targeting dissidents of the regime. It is the first that anyone has been charged with spying on British soil for the Hong Kong intelligence service. The trio were charged under the new National Security Act brought in last year to target those working secretly for hostile states within the UK. They are accused of ‘hostile activity which includes information-gathering, hostile surveillance, acts of deception and forcing entry into a UK residential address.’ The ‘primary targets’ are said to be pro-democracy campaigners from the Hong Kong diaspora now based in the UK. The three men are alleged to have broken into the home of one of their targets in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, on May 1 this year. Scotland Yard's Counter-Terrorism Command, supported by colleagues from Counter-Terrorism Policing North East and South East, have arrested a total of 11 people as part of the ongoing investigation.“ https://lnkd.in/ec7u8khr
