Sir William d'Aubigny was Pincerna or "Le Botellier" to King William I, the Duke of Normandy, later known as "William the Conqueror". The Pincerna Regis was the king's cupbearer and one of his most loyal confidants. Traditionally, the Pincerna served as the Master Butler of the Royal household.

William's father, William d'Aubigny, seigneur de Saint-Martin-d'Aubigny, and his two uncles, Roger and Neil, fought for William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings. Their names appear in the Battle Abbey Rolls, a record of the knight companions of Duke William of Normandy. These were the commanders, the elite who provided ships, horses, men, and supplies for the venture. They also commanded their private battlefield forces composed of archers, infantry, and men-at-arms.

His paternal grandmother was Albreda du Plessis (circa 1038). Her brother was Grimoult du Plessis, "the traitor of Valognes and Val-es-Dunes". William the Conqueror's Picerna at the time was alleged to have been complicit in a failed assassination attempt on William's life before the Battle of Val-ès-Dunes. He died in his dungeon in 1047 (most likely strangled to death).

His son Sir William d'Aubigny, "Strong Hand", (1104 - 1176) was created the 1st Earl of Arundel and Earl of Sussex in 1138. That year he married Adeliza of Louvain, King Henry Beauclerc's widow. The couple moved into Arundel Castle after their marriage and resided there until their deaths. Thereafter, the castle became the hereditary manse of the Earls of Arundel and Dukes of Norfolk. Henry Fitzalan-Howard is the current Earl of Arundel and 18th Duke of Norfolk.

In 1067 William the Conqueror granted Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury (and, technically, the 1st Earl of Arundel), all of Sussex in reward for his important role in the Conquest. He began building Arundel Castle on Christmas day that year. In 1102 Henry Beauclerc stripped his son Robert of Bellême, 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury, and his other two brothers of all their English titles and inheritance, including Arundel Castle, and banished them from the country as punishment for their lack of support for his kingship. (WWII British Army Field Marshall Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, descends directly from the original Earls of Shrewsbury.)

William's descendant, William d'Aubigny (1146 - 1236), Lord of Belvoir Castle, was one of the Sureties of the Magna Carta. He was present at Runnymede when King John, son of Henry II, signed the Magna Carta into English law in 1215 (reenactment).
