Other than the royal family, the House of Rochechouart is the oldest baronage in French history. Françoise was a direct descendant of the lineage that began when Charles the Bald, grandson of Charlemagne, made Foucher de Limoges a vicomte in 876. Both the main lineage and the Mortemart cadet branch are viable today.

Louis XIV maintained more than a dozen maîtresses-en-titre. During the reign of Henry IV, the title was coined to denote an officially recognised mistress of the king. Quite often, as in Madame de Montespan's case, a maîtresses-en-titre held more suasion with the monarch than his consort. In fact, in addition to cultivating her father's career, she also later persuaded Louis to legitimize their children - something that's rarely, if ever done by a monarch perforce of his own volition. I'm at a loss to cite a similar occurence of a monarch being moved to recognize his illegimate children in a similar fashion. Amazing, especially considering Louis was perhaps the most powerful monarch in French history.

Françoise served as a lady-in-waiting for both Maria Theresa and Henrietta Stuart. Henrietta, sister of King James II of England, married Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, Louis' brother.

Princess Anne de Chabot-Rohan, maternal granddaughther of Duke Henri de Rohan, also attended Maria Theresa as a lady-in-waiting. She preceded Madame Montespan as maîtresses-en-titre, but both were amorously engaged to Louis around the same timeframe.

Françoise' eldest daughter, Louise Françoise de Bourbon, amassed a vast fortune investing in Système de Law. Afterward, she built the Palais Bourbon in Paris. Completed in 1728, the buildings and grounds of the estate became nationalised during the French Revolution. It has been the seat of the Assemblée Nationale since 1849.

The Codex Borbonicus, which was written by Aztec priests around the time of Spanish conquest of Mexico, is named after the Palais Bourbon. It is in the collection of the Bibliothèque de l'Assemblée Nationale.

Marie de Rochechouart, Françoise' aunt, married Louis Phélypeaux, seigneur de La Vrillière. He built the Hôtel de Toulouse complex that has housed the headquarters of Banque de France since 1811. Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse (son of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan), acquired the building complex in 1712. Like the Palais Bourbon, it was nationalised after the French Revolution.

Marguerite de Rochechouart (1665 - 1727) was the 43rd abbesse of Montmartre Abbey. She is the namesake of Boulevard de Rochechouart. The Paris Métro station Barbès – Rochechouart is located at the intersection of Boulevard Barbès and Boulevard de Rochechouart.

The Benedictine abbey was founded by King Louis VI during the early 12th century. Adélaïde de Savoie, his wife, was its first abbesse. The abbey was completely demolished by rioters during the French Revolution. Marie-Louise de Laval-Montmorency, the last abbesse, was guillotined at the Barrière du Trône in 1794. She was a direct descendant of Mathieu II "Grand Connétable" de Montmorency and Guy I of Montlhéry.

Madame Montespan was a distant cousin of Anna de Rochechouart, duchesse d'Uzès.

The Patricians: Annas (Anne) de Montmorency, duc de Montmorency (1493 - 1567) - Marshal of France, Constable of France, Peer of France, Honorary Knight of the Garter - Author's 3rd Cousin 17x Removed

Anne was a direct descendant of both Alfred the Great and William the Conqueror. According to many genealogical studies, Bouchard de Montmorency (930 - 975), 1st duc of Montmorency, was Alfred the Great's 2nd great grandson as well as the primogenitor of the illustrious House of Montmorency.

Prior to 1528, when construction commenced, Anne commissioned Pierre Chambiges, mason and architect to King Francis I de Valois, to design and build the Grand Château de Chantilly. The Petit Château de Chantilly was later built for him by Jean Bullant, who also constructed his tombs. Only the Petit Château survived the French Revolution.

After his death the estate passed on to his son Henry I of Montmorency who in turn willed it to his daughter Charlotte Marguerite de Montmorency, wife of Henri de Bourbon, Prince of Condé (1588–1646). Following the couple's demise, their son Louis II Bourbon-Condé, le Grand Condé, (1621 – 1686) inherited Château de Chantilly. During the mid-19th century, the ducs d'Orléans took control of the property and subsequently completely renovated the château into the current iteration.

The Institut de France now owns Château de Chantilly that houses the Musée Condé. The art museum contains one of the finest art collections in France. The gallery is considered second in importance only to the Musée du Louvre.

Anne possessed one of the finest military minds of his day. In addition to the other honors accorded him as a result, his brilliant accomplishments as a military leader even led to his investiture as Honorary Knight of the Garter. Founded by King Edward III in 1348, The Most Noble Order of the Garter is the oldest and most prestigious order of chivalric knighthood in England and the U.K. Montmorency's heraldic Garter plate is still installed within St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

In 1567 he led pro-Catholic forces to victory over the Huguenot (Protestant) army at the Battle of St-Denis, but died two days later from wounds he sustained. His death marked the end of hostilities between the two factions vying for monarchal control of France during the French Wars of Religion.

In 1768 rue de Montmorency was named in honour of the Montmorency family. The former residence of Nicholas Flamel, the famous 14th-century alchemist, scribe, and manuscript-seller, is located at 52 rue de Montmorency. Located in the historic Le Marais district, it is the oldest Parisian stone house still standing. A popular restaurant is operated from the ground floor.

Chantilly Racecourse is located within Chantilly Forest, the heart of traditional French horse training and equestrianism. The flat thoroughbred racecourse is the venue for the Prix du Jockey Club. Inaugurated in 1836, the race is one of the Classic Races run annually in France. Ridden by Ryan Moore, The Grey Gatsby won the 2014 race in course record time.

Since 1969 seven thoroughbreds owned by His Highness Aga Khan IV have won the Prix de Diane (last in 2012). Since 1950 his racehorses have also won the Prix du Jocket Club seven times (last in 2006).

Believing he might reincarnate as a Chatillon thoroughbred, Louis Henri, Prince de Condé and Duke of Bourbon, ordered the The Great Stables of Chatillon designed and built at lavish proportions, inside and out. The Living Museum of the Horse is housed in the facility.

The following are Montmorency and cadet branch family members and cousins who served as Marshals of France since the exalted military honor was created in 1185:

- Charles de Montmorency, Lord of Montmorency (1325–1381), Marshal of France in 1344.
- Gilles de Montmorency-Laval, Baron Rais, Lord of Ingrande and of Champtocé (1404–1440), Marshal of France in 1429
- André de Laval-Montmorency, Lord of Lohéac and of Retz (1408–1486), Marshal of France in 1439.
- Anne I de Montmorency, Duke of Montmorency and of Damville (1492–1567), Marshal of France in 1522
- François de Montmorency, Duke of Montmorency (1520–1563), Marshal of France in 1559.
- Henri I de Montmorency, Lord of Damville, Duke of Montmorency,(1534–1614), Marshal of France in 1566
- Urbain de Montmorency-Laval, Marquis of Sablé (1557–1629), Marshal of France in 1595.
- Henri II, Duke of Montmorency and of Damville, also Admiral of France (1595–1632), Marshal of France in 1630.
François-Henri de Montmorency, duc de Luxembourg (1628–1695), Marshal of France in 1675.
- Christian Louis de Montmorency-Luxembourg, Prince de Tingry (1713–1787), Marshal of France in 1734.
- Louis de Gand de Mérode de Montmorency, prince d'Isenghien (1678–1762), Marshal of France in 1741.

As second-in-command only to the reigning French monarch, a Constable of France wielded power and responsibility as the commander-in-chief of the French military. The following Montmorency family members served in that capacity:

- Thibaut, Seigneur de Montmorency, 1085–1107
- Mathieu de Montmorency (died 1160), 1138–?
- Mathieu I le Grand, Baron de Montmorency (died 1231), 1218–1231
- Anne de Montmorency, Grand Maitre de France (1492–1567), 1538–1567
- Henri I de Montmorency (1570–1621), 1593–1621

With the creation of the ducal-peerage of Montmorency in 1551 for Anne by King Francis I, his childhood friend and mentor, the House of Montmorency ascended to the highest rank of French nobility, which was often directly related to princes of the royal blood. This characteristic applied to the Dukes of Montmorency since House of Bourbon-Condé (cousins of the Royal House of Bourbon) assumed title of the peerage after marriage to the original Montmorency ducal lineage. The original Montmorency peerage lasted, though recreated in essence twice, through 1951, when it went extinct with the death of the last duke.

The Patricians: Louis XIV de Bourbon (1638 - 1715) - King of France and Navarre, Longest Ruling Monarch (72+ years) in European History, Eponym of the U.S. State of Louisianna - Author's 11th Cousin 11x Removed

Louis abandoned Louvre Palace as the official home of the Bourbon monarchy for two reasons. Firstly, to take refuge from the increasingly hostile Parisian citizenry. Secondly, to take up residency in the grandly luxurious Palace of Versailles so he could start bonding with the French nobility, and they with each other. Versailles became their permanent residence by monarchal decree. It was a smart move on Louis' part that essentially reinstated and solidified the power of monarchy, which was on the wane due to the nobility's revolt against the loss of their feudal power with the advent of a strong federal government based in Paris. Cardinal Richelieu started that trend during the reign of Louis' father, Louis XIII. France emerged from the royal communal experience as the foremost European political power during the Sun King's reign.

With 210,000 square metres (2,260,421 sq ft) of floor space, Palais du Louvre maintains the number one position on the Guinness World Records list of the "world's largest palaces". King Francis I Valois razed the former iteration of the royal residence and began building the current one in 1546. In comparison, Château de Versailles ranks #9 on the list, but #1 in terms of the total acreage of "Royal Estates" with over 2,014 acres of palace grounds.

Louis' great-grandson Charles III de Bourbon, King of Spain, began building the Royal Palace of Caserta in 1752. He also contributed to the construction of the Royal Palace of Madrid built over the site of the fire-razed Alcázar.

The House of Rochechouart is the oldest baronage in French history. Louis' favourite mistress Françoise-Athénaïs Rochechouart was a direct descendant of the lineage that began when Charles the Bald, Charlemagne's grandson, made Foucher de Limoges a vicomte in 876. Both the main lineage and the Mortemart cadet branch are viable today.

The Sun King's vision of French colonial expansion led to the creation of the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris. The Roman Catholic missionary organization selected Francis-Xavier de Montmorency-Laval as the first Bishop of New France. In recognition of his contribution toward the development of the church in New France, he received nomination as a candidate for canonisation during the papacy of the late Pope Jean-Paul II. In 2014 Pope Francis made him a saint by equipollent canonization.

In 1670 Louis ordered the construction of L'Hôtel des Invalides, the famous complex of French Baroque buildings located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. Completed eight years later, it initially functioned as a hospital and housing for aged and infirmed soldiers. Today the facility still functions as such, but the majority of the total floor space is devoted to other purposes, such as housing the Musée de l'Armée as well as a section of vaults and crypts of famous French military heroes. Napoleon Bonapart's sarcophagus is displayed in the latter space; Marshal Turenne's body is interred in one of the nearby vaults.

The Sun King was an agnatic descendant Hugh Capet (939 - 996), the first king of Franks.
