Dedicated Web Site:Puramore - The Lute of Pythagoras

In 1430m after declining investiture as a a Knight of the Order of the Garter, Duke Philip the Good.selected 24 Burgundian seigneurs as founder knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Nearly all of them had previsouly served him as military commanders in battles fought under his banner during the 100 Years War, including those led against forces loyal to Joan of Arc. (Over a year later, Philippe's forces captured her at the Battle of Compiègne).

The two chapters of the original society are each headed by Sovereign Grand Masters. The Spanish chapter is currently presided over by former King Juan Carlos of Spain; Archduke Karl von Habsburg presides over the Austrian chapter. King Juan Carlos is also a Knight of the Order of the Garter.

King Henry V Lancaster's court, was one of the founder knights selected. He is the primogenitor of the Delano lineage that began in America when his descendant, Philippe de Lannoy, immigrated there during the early 17th century. U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was his direct descendant.

The Patricians: Tonantius Ferreolus (418 - 476) - Praetorian Prefect of Gaul - Author's 42nd Great-Uncle

Print and eBook editions of Puramore - The Lute of Pythagoras, a novel by Steven Wood Collins, now available through most major online booksellers

"The discomfiture of the mighty attempt of Attila to found a new
anti-Christian dynasty upon the wreck of the temporal power of
Rome, at the end of the term of twelve hundred years, to which
its duration had been limited by the forebodings of the
heathen."—HERBERT

Tonantius Ferreolus served as one of the last Gallo-Roman praetorian prefects at the time Attila and his Hunnic army invaded Gaul. Before the invasion, he was instrumental in allying independent Gallic barbarian armies, including those led by Merovech Meroving and Visigoth Theodoric I, under the banner of Roman General Flavius Aetius for the successful defense of the Roman territory at the Battle of Châlons in 451.

Atilla's decisive defeat at the Battle of Châlons marks a major turning point in human history since his victory might have spelled the end of Western Civilisation. Accordingly, it's ranked as the 6th most decisive military battle ever fought in Sir Edward Shepherd Creasy's book, entitled The Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World: from Marathon to Waterloo (1851). The following excerpt opines as to its relative significance:

"Attila's attacks on the Western empire were soon renewed; but never with such peril to the civilized world as had menaced it before his defeat at Chalons. And on his death, two years after that battle, the vast empire which his genius had founded was soon dissevered by the successful revolts of the subject nations. The name of the Huns ceased for some centuries to inspire terror in Western Europe, and their ascendency passed away with the life of the great king by whom it had been so fearfully augmented."

A close relative of Emperor Avitus, Tonantius descended from a family of Roman nobility that flourished in recorded Roman history since the first century A.D. His mother was a clarissima femina and daughter of Flavius Afranius Syagrius, Consul in 382. Individual members of the lineage regularly served as senators and praetorian prefects. For instance, Flavius Eparchius (295 - 340) was Augustus Prefect of Egypt twice, initially between 335 and 337, and subsequently between 338 and 340 CE.

Before the ascendency of Constantine the Great as the Emperor of Rome, Praetorian Prefects commanded the Praetorian Guard. During his reign, he began the practice of appointing Prefects to govern one of the four Roman prefectures that comprised the Roman Empire after he divided it into two parts - The western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire. In that capacity, the prefect held the highest administrative position within the prefecture itself, wielding about the same amount of political responsibility and power as a modern U.S. state governor.

Just before his ascendency as Emperor of Rome, Imperator Titus Caesar Augustus served as his father's Praetorian Prefect under the ancient regime whereby Praetorian Guards were responsible for the emperor's security. Sometimes, however, the Praetorian Prefect performed exactly the opposite function in staging coups d'état. This was likely one of Constantine's primary motives in stripping the military function from the office.

Historians consider Tonantius' cousin Sidonius Apollinaris as one of the most important Roman authors of the fifth century. The body of his literary works, mainly written as panegyrics, survived to provide historians with a keen insight into contemporary Roman emperors and their culture.

After the official fall of Rome, when Odoacer deposed Emperor Romulus in 476, Tonantius' descendants remained in France. They eventually became related to the ruling Meroving dynasty by marriage soon after Clovis, Merovech's grandson, conquered the Franks. Tracing their descendants through many generations reveals him as the primogenitor of the Plantagenet of England lineage. Edward III Plantagenet, Margaret Pole and Sir Walter Raleigh were all his direct descendants.

Both Walter and Margaret met the same fate: Margaret was beheaded in the Tower of London on the morning of 27 May 1541; Walter was beheaded in the Old Palace Yard at the Palace of Westminster on 29 October 1618. Both were also Plantagenet pretenders to the throne.

The defeat of Flavius Afranius Syagrius, Tonantius's maternal grandfather and last Roman Prefect of Gaul, at the Battle of Soissons marked the official end of the Western Roman Empire. Though Clovis later had him assassinated following his capture, he reinstated the Syagrius kingdom to Syagrius' heirs. They later became the Counts of Anjou and Plantagenets of England and France.

The first historical mention of the Syagrius' bloodline, known as gens Afrania, comes during the second century BC with the advent of Gaius Afranius Stellio as praetor in 185 BC. The family tree goes back in more ancient times to Greece, the most notable regions in and around Sparta and Troy (today's southwestern Turkey).

The Ferreolus bloodline traces back to Thera (today's Santorini), a Greek island first colonized by Dorians during the 8th century BC.

The Patricians: Louis XIV de Bourbon (1638 - 1715) - King of France and Navarre, Longest Ruling Monarch (72+ years) in European History, Eponym of the U.S. State of Louisianna - Author's 11th Cousin 11x Removed

Louis abandoned Louvre Palace as the official home of the Bourbon monarchy for two reasons. Firstly, to take refuge from the increasingly hostile Parisian citizenry. Secondly, to take up residency in the grandly luxurious Palace of Versailles so he could start bonding with the French nobility, and they with each other. Versailles became their permanent residence by monarchal decree. It was a smart move on Louis' part that essentially reinstated and solidified the power of monarchy, which was on the wane due to the nobility's revolt against the loss of their feudal power with the advent of a strong federal government based in Paris. Cardinal Richelieu started that trend during the reign of Louis' father, Louis XIII. France emerged from the royal communal experience as the foremost European political power during the Sun King's reign.

With 210,000 square metres (2,260,421 sq ft) of floor space, Palais du Louvre maintains the number one position on the Guinness World Records list of the "world's largest palaces". King Francis I Valois razed the former iteration of the royal residence and began building the current one in 1546. In comparison, Château de Versailles ranks #9 on the list, but #1 in terms of the total acreage of "Royal Estates" with over 2,014 acres of palace grounds.

Louis' great-grandson Charles III de Bourbon, King of Spain, began building the Royal Palace of Caserta in 1752. He also contributed to the construction of the Royal Palace of Madrid built over the site of the fire-razed Alcázar.

The House of Rochechouart is the oldest baronage in French history. Louis' favourite mistress Françoise-Athénaïs Rochechouart was a direct descendant of the lineage that began when Charles the Bald, Charlemagne's grandson, made Foucher de Limoges a vicomte in 876. Both the main lineage and the Mortemart cadet branch are viable today.

The Sun King's vision of French colonial expansion led to the creation of the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris. The Roman Catholic missionary organization selected Francis-Xavier de Montmorency-Laval as the first Bishop of New France. In recognition of his contribution toward the development of the church in New France, he received nomination as a candidate for canonisation during the papacy of the late Pope Jean-Paul II. In 2014 Pope Francis made him a saint by equipollent canonization.

In 1670 Louis ordered the construction of L'Hôtel des Invalides, the famous complex of French Baroque buildings located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. Completed eight years later, it initially functioned as a hospital and housing for aged and infirmed soldiers. Today the facility still functions as such, but the majority of the total floor space is devoted to other purposes, such as housing the Musée de l'Armée as well as a section of vaults and crypts of famous French military heroes. Napoleon Bonapart's sarcophagus is displayed in the latter space; Marshal Turenne's body is interred in one of the nearby vaults.

The Sun King was an agnatic descendant Hugh Capet (939 - 996), the first king of Franks.

The Patricians: Petrus Stuyvesant, 7th and Last Director-General of New Netherland - Relationship to Author: Great Grandfather of Husband of 2nd Cousin 8x Removed

Print and eBook editions of Puramore - The Lute of Pythagoras, a novel by Steven Wood Collins, now available through most major online booksellers

Dedicated Web Site:Puramore - The Lute of Pythagoras

On 11 May 1661, Frans Jacobsen van Oudewater (8th GGF), his wife Geertruid Gerrits and their two small children, Thys and Maritje, boarded de Vergulde Bever from its anchorage in the Zuiderzee. Seventy-eight days later the ship entered New York Harbor and dropped anchor off the coast of the southern tip of Manhattan, or the area of land that is now known as Battery Park. It's likely Governor Petrus Stuyvesant personally greeted them and their fellow passengers as they stepped ashore.

Kiliaen van Rensselaer, co-founder and original director of the Dutch West India Company, was instrumental in assigning Cornelius Jacobsen May (15th GGF) as the first Director-General of New Netherland. Kiliaen's descendant Stephen Van Rensselaer (1764 - 1839) founded the forerunner of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1824. It is the oldest technological education and research institute in the English-speaking world.

Governor May first sailed to America in 1614. He was essentially a partner in the New Netherland Company formed in Amsterdam that year. He explored and surveyed the Delaware Bay region (Cape May of New Jersey is named after him). After the establishment of the Dutch India Company in 1624, May later skippered the ship New Netherland that delivered the first Dutch colonists to New Netherland. He took up his post as the first governor of the province upon his arrival at Governors Island, NYC.

May's fame was eclipsed during his era by the seafaring adventures of his cousin Jan Cornelisz May. From 1614 to 1617, Jan circumnavigated the globe with Joris van Spilbergen. Jan Mayen Island in the Arctic Ocean is named for him.

From 1577 to 1580, Sir Francis Drake sailed the second circumnavigation of the world (he was actually the first to survive the entire voyage). Possibly following Drake's circumnavigational chart, the Jan May and van Spilbergen expedition took refuge in the same Chilean harbours (El Quisco, Algarrobo and El Canelo) as did Drake during his.

Following Stuyvesant's capitulation in 1664, the English led by Richard Nichols, 1st Colonial Governor of New York, immediately renamed New Amsterdam after James II Stuart, then Duke of York. His brother King Charles II granted him possession of all the territory between Delaware and Connecticut rivers earlier that year.

The earthly remains of Petrus is interred in a vault in St Mark's Church in-the-Bowery. Completed in 1799, the church was built over the site of the family chapel he constructed in 1660 on property he bought from the Dutch West India Company in 1651.

Dedicated Web Site: Puramore - The Lute of Pythagoras

The first lab generated in 1985, the fullerene molecule C60 was named buckminsterfullerene (or bucky-ball) due to its structural resemblance to Bucky's geodesic dome. The carbon-based molecule and other fullerene molecules form the basis of nanotechnology structures such as the nanotube. Fullerene chemistry and physics represent a cutting-edge scientific field associated with 21st-century technological development.

In my social science fiction novel, Puramore - The Lute of Pythagoras, a sophisticated form of nanotechnology presents itself as a supporting element of the storyline towards the end of the book. The scenario introduces an artificial intelligence entity incorporated within an advanced nanotech material (ca. 2050). Somewhat like a Transformer, but sans seams, in one instance the resultant "Skin" transforms itself from a supersonic ramjet aircraft into a passenger jet airplane within seconds of order by the pilot.

Her father, Amos Bronson Alcott (1799 - 1888), home-schooled Louisa. Fellow members of the Transcendental Club - including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Henry David Thoreau - augmented the experimental educator's curriculum he designed for her. Family friend and Brook Farm founder Nathaniel Hawthorne also instructed her in literary composition.

Scottish philosopher and economist David Hume is widely regarded as the founder of transcendentalism.

The Patricians: Adam Smith (1723 - 1790) - Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow, Moral Philosopher, Pioneer of Political Economics, Father of Classical Economics, Royal Society of Scotland Fellow - Author's 13th Cousin 6x Removed

Dedicated Web Site:Puramore - The Lute of Pythagoras

The late Baroness Thatcher often consulted Adam's The Wealth of Nations during her tenure as U.K. Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990. It's known that she always kept a copy of the book in her purse for that purpose.

Together, Adam and his friend and fellow economist-philospher David Hume essentially designed the framework of modern economics. As posited in his magnus opus The Wealth of Nations, Adam's description of the sources and effects of major economic phenomenon, such as classical supply-and-demand equilibrium, represented the first theories of economic modeling. Moreover, his "invisible hand" theory still prevails to this very day as the cornerstone standard of modern Libertarianism.

Founded in 1977, London-based Adam Smith Institute is a Libertarian think tank that continues to influence public policy decisions in the U.K. It was largely responsible for defining "privatization" public policy implemented by the Thatcher government.

After spending his freshmen and sophomore years studying at Columbia University, my grandfather Lowell "Bro" Outwater Collins (1900 - 1981) graduated from Colorado College with an A.B. degree in Economics during the early 1920s. A WWI veteran and one of America's first military aviators, he founded Founders Mutual Depositor Corporation, one of America's first "open-end" mutual fund companies, in 1938. Dreyfus Corporation (a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Bank of New York Mellon) acquired the firm during the late 1990s to manage "growth" investment portfolios.

Bro was a direct descendant of Quaker John Tripp, the so-called "Founder" of the Tripps of North America. He settled in Newport, Rhode Island, several years after immigrating to America from England during the early 17th century. His descendants are thought to number in the tens of thousands.

The Patricians: Owen Taliesin Desposyni (500 - 540) - Chief of Celtic Druid Bards - Author's 6th Cousin 38x Removed

Print and eBook editions of Puramore - The Lute of Pythagoras, a novel by Steven Wood Collins, now available through most major online booksellers

Dedicated Web Site:Puramore - The Lute of Pythagoras

Poem by Taliesin

I have been a multitude of shapes,
Before I assumed a consistent form.
I have been a sword, narrow, variegated,
I have been a tear in the air,
I have been in the dullest of stars.
I have been a word among letters,
I have been a book in the origin.

The mythical Taliesin, as imagined by Owen Taliesin Desposyni, was found abandoned by Elffin ap Gwyddno while he was salmon fishing. Upon espying him on the river bank, he exclaimed, "Taliesin!", because of the radiant light emanating from his forehead. Taliesin translates as "Shining Brow".

On his way home with the infant, Elffin started to weep in sorrow for him. Suddenly the babe began to sing:

"Fair Elffin, cease your weeping!
Despair brings no profit.
No catch in Gwyddno's weir
Was ever as good as tonight's.
Let no one revile what is his;
Man sees not what nurtures him.
Gwyddno's prayers shall not be in vain.
God breaks not his promises.
Fair Elphin, dry your cheeks!
It does not become you to be sad.
Though you think you have no gain
Undue grief will bring you nothing,
Nor will doubting the miracles of the Lord.
Though I am small, I am gifted.
From the sea and the mountain, from rivers' depths
God sent bounty to the blessed.
Elphin of cheerful disposition-
Meek is your mind.
You must not lament so heavily.
Better God than gloomy foreboding.
Though I am frail and little
And wet with spume of Dylan's sea,
I shall earn in a day of contention
Riches better than three score for you.
Elphin of the remarkable qualities,
Grieve not for your catch.
Though I am frail here in my bunting,
There are wonders on my tongue.
You must not fear greatly
While I am watching over you.
By remembering the name of the Trinity
None can overcome you."

Elffin and his father Gwyddno 'Garanhir', 1st King of Strathclyde, raised Taliesin as their son. Taliesin sang in Urien's court and the courts of two other Welsh kings, including, as legend has it, King Arthur's (or perhaps instead Prince Artur of Strathclyde's).

A variation of the Legend of King Arthur's Court names Taliesin as the father of Viviane d'Acqs, The Lady of the Lake. She enchanted and later enslaved Merlin with her magic. She unintentionally caused his death by imprisoning him in a sorcerous tomb she conjured. Or did his spirit escape imprisonment? Some believe that Taliesin and Merlin were the same.

The Patricians: Thomas à Becket (1118 - 1170) - Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Chancellor of England, Catholic Martyr and Saint - Author's 1st Cousin 25x Removed

"Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" - King Henry II

Those rash words, spoken in frustration with Thomas' longstanding oppostion to Henry's agenda to gain control of the church, was mistaken as a royal command by four zealous young knights in his presence at the time. Reginald fitzUrse, Hugh de Morville, William de Tracy, and Richard le Breton seized the moment and immediately set out for Canterbury to effect the demise of Henry's erstwhile friend (see ancestral relationships below).

By papal decree, Canterbury Cathedral, where Becket met a grisly death at the hands of the four knights, became a place of pilgrimage after Pope Alexander III canonised him on 21 February 1173. After petitioning the pope for forgiveness, Henry II walked bare foot to Canterbury to pray at the spot of the assassination. Monks lashed him with whips whilst he prayed for forgiveness.

After Pope Alexander excommunicated the assassins, they travelled to Rome to petition him for forgiveness. In response, he ordered them to serve as knights in the Holy Land for a period of fourteen years. The edict also required them to remain there for the rest of their natural lives. None of them ever returned to their homeland.

In 597 Saint Aethelbert, King of Kent, donated a parcel of land he owned in Canterbury to Saint Augustine so he could build the first Catholic church in Britain sanctioned by a king. Canterbury Cathedral was erected between 1070 and 1077 on the property. Aethelbert's nephew Sæberht, King of Essex, gave Saint Augustine the land to build the first Christian church in London. After the Fire of 1666 destroyed the old church built during the 11th century, the present St Paul's Cathedral was built on the same site over the course of the following half century.

Early in his clerical career Thomas became a protégé of his cousin Theobald de Bec, who hailed from area around Thierville near Le Bec-Hellouin in Normandy. Theobald served as the abbot of Bec Abbey before King Stephen appointed him Archbishop of Canterbury in 1138. Thomas' family hailed from the same area in Normandy; his surname is derived from Bec.

Bec Abbey played an important role in the post-Conquest development of the English Catholic church. Saint Anselm de Bec, the second Archbishop of Canterbury under Norman rule, served as abbot of the abbey prior to his appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury. He founded the school of scholasticism that flourished as a learning discipline in medieval universities from 1100 to 1700. Ironically, the abbey has links to the development of Anglicanism well before the establishment of the Church of England, and was regularly visited by Archbishops of Canterbury.

In his zeal to rid England of every vestige of the Catholic Church, King Henry VIII Tudor decreed the destruction of the Shrine of Saint Thomas at Canterbury Cathedral in 1538. He also ordered the pulverisation of his bones contained within. Many believe, however, that prior to the destruction of the shrine, monks substituted the saint's bones with that of someone else and reburied them elsewhere in the cathedral. Curiously, in January 1888, workmen excavating the eastern crypt of cathedral dug up the ancient bones of a tall, middle-aged man whose skull had been cleft by a sword. The whereabouts of his bones nevertheless still remains shrouded in mystery.

The following lists other Archbishops of Canterbury with whom I share ancestral heritage:
