Originally a pamphlet published in 1853, The Two Babylons is Hislop's most famous work. In this book he argues that the Roman Catholic Church is nothing more than pagan cult, with roots in Babylonian mystery cults, which have a bank of secret knowledge only available to those who have been formally accepted into the cult. Roman Catholics, Hislop argues, are descendants from early Christians who adopted the Roman religion descended from the worship of Semiramis, the wife of the founder of Babylon. By discrediting the true Christianity of Catholics, Hislop hoped to bolster the legitimacy of the Protestant and Scottish Reformations. Students of theology and those interested in the complex history of Christianity will find Hislop's arguments provocative enough that they may be moved to further research of their own. Scottish minister ALEXANDER HISLOP (1807-1865) became an ordained clergymen in the Free Church of Scotland in 1844. As a Presbyterian minister, Hislop was famously critical of

About the Author

Alexander Hislop (1807-1865) was a Free Church of Scotland minister infamous for his outspoken criticisms of the Roman Catholic Church. He was the son of Stephen Hislop (died 1837), a mason by occupation and an elder of the Relief Church. Alexander's brother was also named Stephen Hislop (lived 1817 1863) and became well known in his time as a missionary to India and a naturalist. Alexander was for a time parish schoolmaster of Wick, Caithness. In 1831 he married Jane Pearson. He was for a time editor of the Scottish Guardian newspaper. As a probationer he joined the Free Church of Scotland at the Disruption of 1843. He was ordained in 1844 at the East Free Church, Arbroath, where he became senior minister in 1864. He died of a paralytic stroke the next year after being ill for about two years. He wrote several books, his most famous being The Two Babylons: Papal worship Revealed to be the worship of Nimrod and His wife

Can be a difficult read. Something akin to piecing a large puzzle together. Reads like a genealogy at times, but very informative.

This book explains the origins of Paganism as so practiced by the church. It explains Nimrod the son of Cush. It explains the holidays that are celebrated in modern times. I would recommend for people who can understand our current system of things.

This is a good source of information as to the history of Romanism, which is not Biblical. It reveals the beginnings of the Madonna/child worship that goes on in the Roman churches these days. It's roots are diabolical. As Satan craves worship any way he can get it away from the one true living God, he will raise up all sorts of unbiblical doctrines and call it 'church'. This is why we must be students of holy Scripture, our true plumb line for life. I loathe Romanism which makes itself holier than God Himself in it's worship of Mary, saints, statues and icons and it's papal system, which is rubbish. Mr. Hislop calls it out for what it is. a good read.

"Cush was the father of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in Shinar. From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah, and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city." - Gen 10:8-12.

The Bible refers to Nimrod only fleetingly but in "The Two Babylons, or The Papal Worship, Proved to be the Worship of Nimrod and His Wife" (Loizeaux Brothers, 1959) Alexander Hislop (1807-1865) sets out to prove that Nimrod and his wife, Semiramis, were the inspiration for the important pagan religions of antiquity. He argues that a slew of deities including Adonis, Apollo, Attes, Baal-zebub, Bacchus, Cupid, Dagon, Hercules, Januis, Linus, Mars, Merodach, Mithra, Moloch, Narcissus, Oannes, Odin, Orion, Osiris, Pluto, Saturn, Tammuz, Teitan, Typhon, Vulcan, Wodan, Zoroaster, along with Aphrodite, Artemis, Astarte, Aurora, Bellona, Ceres, Diana, Isis, Juno, Mylitta, Proserpine, Rhea, Venus, and Vesta can be traced to the Babylon mystery cult worship of Nimrod and Semiramis. Hislop then argues that many elements of pagan belief and practice were brought into the Christian church via opportunists, accommodators, compromisers, and pseudo-Christians (sounds like many of the leadership in today's Evangelicalism) and became the basis for much of Roman Catholicism.

"The Two Babylons" was first published in 1853 in pamphlet form, expanded in 1858, and first published as a hardcover in 1919. The publication has been surrounded by controversy since it was first introduced. Many criticize Hislop's extrapolations as reckless and overreaching. I'm certainly not an antiquities scholar but there appears to be more than a grain of truth to Hislop's arguments, which are supported by 400 footnotes along with 61 illustrations. Every decent Romanism library MUST include "The Two Babylons."

Reading this book is definitely a challenge due to the 19th-century prose and plentiful small-font footnotes so it won't do for a relaxing afternoon at the beach. You'll definitley want to get your hands on an older Loizeaux Brothers edition (red and white dust cover) which contains the unaltered text and supporting material. Unfortunately, several of the recent self-published, print-on-demand editions have altered the text and don't include the brief introduction, sixty-one illustrations, copious footnotes, lengthy appendix, or index.

I received a copy of this book from a friend many years ago. I loaned it to a pastor who never returned it to me. I had heard it was difficult to replace, so I was delighted when I searched for it on Amazon. My original copy was hard cover, but decided to order this soft cover instead. It is in excellant condition and with print which is easier to read. It is new, perfect condition. I am more than satisfied. I appreciated the fast delivery and Amazon's vast selection of hard to find books. THE TWO BABYLONS by Rev. Alexanader Hislop is today controversial, but the Holy Bible states there was coming a time when people could not endure sound doctrine. Since we depend so completely on our various denominational leaders to guide us into truth to prepare us for stepping into eternity which will be eternal and forever, I believe we should give major effort to make certain the TRUTH we are depending on, is just that, TRUTH. There will be no correcting what we have learned and depended on after that final breath. We must research for ourselves. I am convinced many do not know the depth of what our religious stands are This book is worth giving serious research. I also believe the time is late, and I believe we all should know in depth exactly what our church affiliations believe and compare them with the Bible especially the New Testament. Wonderful book.

I'm confident that without knowledge of the occult, most readers won't be able to access and syncretize the sublime records kept in this book. Even the author(s) approached much of this work with a literalist interpretation of what they were re-searching. Most individuals have no idea what they're stumbling upon here, but I promise it's one of the most important works you could stash in your library and revisit.

However, the facts remain the facts regardless of our interpretation of them, so with the gift of insight, knowledge of the phonetic cabala (not to be confused with kabbalah), alchemy, astronomy, astrology, etc, the reader can access what's really going on with the symbolism and systems that have been imposed on humanity for thousands of years. If this book doesn't help raise you up, then nothing will.

The reviewer who commented on the "bad print" referred to a completely different edition but Amazon.co.uk put his comment here. This edition has no such problem --- it is absolutely perfect. As for the content of this book --- there is little to be said --- everyone should know that this is a standard scholarly work on the history and origins of the Church. Not just Roman Catholic but any denomination. The Russian translation of this book is distributed on my site.

The book's content is good but the font style and size of the printed text is not so pleasurable to read. It's like from a century old text which has been directly photocopied.
