Understanding the role of sacred geometry in cosmology and human affairs

• Explains how ancient societies that grasped the timeless principles of sacred geometry were able to create flourishing societies

• Illustrates the social and spiritual values in the natural progression of number

• Contains more than 300 full-color drawings showing the interplay of number and sacred geometry

Galileo described the universe as a large book written in the language of mathematics, which can only be read by those with knowledge of its characters--triangles, circles, and other geometrical figures. The laws of geometry are not human inventions. They are found ready-made in nature and hold a truth that is the same in all times and all places and is older than the world itself.

In
How the World Is Made John Michell explains how ancient societies that grasped the timeless principles of sacred geometry were able to create flourishing societies. His more than 300 full-color illustrations reveal the secret code within these geometrical figures and how they express the spiritual meanings in the key numbers of 1 through 12. For example, the number 8 and its octagon are symbols of peace and stability, the holy 7 and its seven-sided figure are connected to the world-soul. He identifies the various regular shapes and shows their constructions; their natural symbolism; their meetings, matings, and ways of breeding; and their functions within the universal order. Some are musical and structural, others relate to life and humanity. In the process of making these discoveries, Michell helps us see the world in a new light. Disparate shapes and their corresponding numbers are woven together, resolving themselves into an all-inclusive world image--that “pattern in the heavens,” as Socrates called it, “which anyone can find and establish within themselves.”

SACRED GEOMETRY / ANCIENT MYSTERIES

How the World Is Made

Galileo described the universe as a large book written in the language of mathematics, which can only be read by those with knowledge of its characters--triangles, circles, and other geometrical figures. JOHN MICHELL (1933-2009), educated at Eton and Cambridge, was the pioneer researcher and specialist in the field of ancient, traditional science. He is the author of more than 40 books that have profoundly influenced modern thinking, including
The Dimensions of Paradise, The New View over Atlantis, and The Sacred Center.

ALLAN BROWN is an illustrator who specializes in sacred geometrical figures. He lives in Brighton.

This is one of the most interesting and beautiful books I have ever owned, particularly on the subject matter. It is in a class of its own. Anyone even remotely interested in Sacred Geometry will be blown away by both the text and illustrations. It is deserving of the highest praise.

I bought a second copy recently to give as a gift. Unfortunately, I received a severely damaged book in worse condition than any used book I have bought, with no exceptions. I ended up gifting my own copy, which I had kept in excellent condition because the book is a treasure, and I am now waiting on a replacement.

This is one of those books that if I had to exchange it five times to get a copy in good condition, it would be well worth my trouble.

John Michell's book is a work of a true artist who, like a real Renaissance man, does not draw lines between exact sciences and artistic inspiration. The illustrator is on the same wave with the author, and his mind-captivating illustrations create the world of magic, letting the reader enter an enchanted forest of extraordinary ideas of ancient thinkers. Words, numbers and the art of mesmerizing geometric forms open the gates of wonder even for those who are not great mathematicians (sorry, Pythagoras!). Yes, the text and the accompanying it art demand some time and intellectual effort, but the rewards are beyond limitations! Like Virgil, the author leads the reader through a variety of complex concepts, and the entire experience is both intellectual and poetic.

This beautifully crafted book is a fitting tribute to the lifetime authorship of John Michell (1933-2009)

The books of John Michell were something I grew up with. My father's library contained all of Michell's works that were in print at the time. Later in adulthood I continued to follow his writings as they emerged. He has certainly left a legacy of some intelligent insights. This final volume deals with the arcane subject of sacred geometry, something that was more or less invested in all of his writings. Here you will find the underlying principles that informed much of his writing and thought over the years.

Lavishly illustrated with his geometric art and text, I am sure this will be a book I will return to for reference for many years to come.

My association with John Michells work goes back about 40 years. I developed an interest in sacred geometry in my teens, and very slowly developed an understanding of sorts. Avoiding most of numerology and its association with superstition and witchcraft left pretty slim picking in the literature of the day.
I discovered John Michell in 1972 with the publication of "City of Revelation", and it was like someone turned the lights on. Much of what I had learned on my own was easily referenced with his much more complete presentation.
That same year (1972) I came across "The View Over Atlantis", and reaffirmed certain life-changes I had recently made. Sacred Geometry had become real to me in a way I could not have imagined.
This last volume is a fine accompaniment to the ever-growing collection of my own geometrical schemes, lending affirmation and justification to my efforts, and the path upon which I tread.
I am profoundly grateful for John Michells lifes work.

Just when I thought I couldn't be surprised by strange and wonderful things any more, I discovered this and Michell other books. This one has driven me to buy expensive compasses and lots of colored pencils. The meaning and implications of the geometric facts are astounding. In addition, the reader is invited to practice and participate in these profundities by spending time creating.

This is a very thorough book on sacred geometry. I was amazed at the detail. I was a bit overwhelmed by it, but I am sure if I reread it, I would be able to digest more of the content. I highly recommend it if you are interested in sacred geometry.

This book is fabulous. Sacred geometry has always been tricky for me to wrap my mind around and this book succeeds in presenting it in a way I can understand. It is also a beautiful book, with many illustrations that are both relevant and beautiful!

I just love this book, it opens up a deeper view on our existence I guess many of us have yet to learn.

How does it do that? Bringing back all the beautiful colours and re-igniting our awareness of natural, some would say divine, order. Like with the fishes in the tank in the above illustration...

Today, on the 24th of February 2022, I pray that all people on this planet may return to this natural order, especially those, who still look for solutions through agression. May the field of consciousness in which we all swim, even if we don't realize, let our prayers and healing energies reach the hearts of those people who need ist the most 🧡🙏

This is a remarkable book. Following the advice of fellow reviewer 'Joe', I bought this book following on from the excellent 'Quadrivium' published by the equally excellent Wooden Books. Certainly this book has the space to expand on many concepts introduced in 'Quadrivium' in greater depth. Nonetheless, this is still an introductory text in my opinion, individual topics covered here could have entire books devoted to them.

A brief comment on the quality of the book itself. The hardback is bound and printed in India. Whilst several pages (~10) have bleed through from images overleaf, this does not particularly detract from the image on the page you are viewing. Overall, the print quality is good and the paper selected strikes a reasonable balance between quality and cost. This book is certainly in the £35 bracket which I paid for it in terms of physical quality.

I missed this when published but it is a very considered presentation with hand draw and pretty graphics that is the result of a lifetimes world by a seventies legend. There are completely new aspects in the book that complete John Michell's quite unique model of the world.
