Textual and iconographic evidences confirm the existence of the Osirian cult in the crypts of the temples which were regarded as the tomb of Osiris. Wabet rooms were connected with Osiris as the cult of solar deities was identified with the funerary function of Osiris by the late Period. Temples' crypts became the starting point of the Osirian festival of Khoiak. This is attested in the temples of Denderah, Edfu, Aramant, and Opet temple. In the crypts of Armant, Osiris was connected with Montu and was identified with god Sokar in the crypts of Edfu. The Osirian ritual of giving cool water is represented in the Crypts of Denderah. Crypts nos. 1 and 2 in Edfu temple were consecrated to preserve the reliquary leg of Osiris. The khekeru frieze and the Hwt bennu sign, which were connected with the Osirian cult, appeared on a large scale in the temples' crypts.

Evidence for the Cult of Osiris at Karnak during the Greco-Roman Period: The Excavations in front of the 1st Pylon , 2023. Current Research in Egyptology 2022. Proceedings of the 22nd Symposium, UPVM3, 26-30 Sept. 2022, Archaeopress/CENiM 36, Oxford-Montpellier.2023 •
The excavations carried out in front of the 1st pylon of Karnak Temple revealed a great embankment of sandstone blocks, public and private Ptolemaic baths, as well as a large bath complex that has been dated to the Roman era. Many mud-brick structures were found north and south of the Ptolemaic bath. This excavation (2011-2013) brought to light a large number of objects which were preserved in the local temple storeroom at Karnak, including a reused limestone funerary stela which discovered inside one of the rooms north of the Roman bath; one of the registers on this shows the owner burning incense in front of the god Osiris, Lord of Eternity. Other finds included bronze statues and faience amulets of Osiris, representing the god in his standard iconography with a mummified form, standing or seated, wearing a false beard and the atef-crown. These were found in domestic contexts assigned to the Greco-Roman Period and may have been used for votive practices inside these houses by their owners. These finds can be considered as important evidence confirming the continuation of the existence of popular cults of Osiris at this period. This contribution seeks to present valuable insights into the cult of Osiris and to investigate the everyday religious beliefs and practices of ordinary people associated with his cult in Greco-Roman Period in this area.

In the reign of Sety I, several versions of the royal titulary appeared on monuments throughout Egypt. It has long been known that Sety’s nomen cartouche appeared in his tomb and his temple at Abydos in Osirianized form by replacing the hieroglyphic figure of Seth with that of Osiris. A new identification of such a cartouche on the stela OIM E10507, discussed below, supports attributing its provenience to Abydos as a votive memorial in the cult of Osiris and king, rather than to Saqqara as has been previously suggested. Furthermore, in seeking to localize the nomen of Sety I, it will be shown that the “Osirianized” forms of this cartouche is more widely attested than previously documented.

The Appearance of Osiris: a case of royal patronage or a bottom-up process?Abydos in the First Millennium AD, British Museum Publications on Egypt and Sudan
Abydos in Late Antiquity: A view from the Shunet el-ZebibPublisher abstract: Throughout their long histories, Egypt’s monuments have been adapted, reused and reimagined. At Abydos, the tombs of the first kings became a locus of the national cult of Osiris, which continued with permutations into the Roman period. In Late Antiquity, the oracle of Bes drew an international audience before it was probably closed under the emperor Constantius II c. AD 359. By the end of the 6th century, Bes was remembered as a demon, who was vanquished by the famous monk, Apa Moses of Abydos. Until now, the region’s history has been told largely from the literary sources. Recent fieldwork at Abydos offers deeper and more nuanced understanding of the region. This volume brings together the evidence from six major fieldwork projects and the British Museum collection in order to present the archaeology of Abydos in the First Millennium AD, when traditional ritual practices were largely replaced by Christianity and, later, Islam was introduced. Each paper details the adaptation of earlier architecture, artefacts, or both, including wall paintings, pottery, inscriptions, papyri and ostraca, and other objects of daily life.
