The ongoing drought in Brazil has raised concerns about the potential impact on the local population, with an estimated half a million individuals at risk of being affected. Among the species particularly vulnerable to this environmental crisis are the Amazon river dolphins, renowned for their distinctive pink hue. These unique freshwater creatures are exclusive to the rivers of South America and are among the few remaining species of freshwater dolphins worldwide. Their slow reproductive cycles render them especially susceptible to various threats.

According to Marmontel, a significant proportion of the carcasses discovered during this period are those of pink dolphins, locally known as "boto" in Brazil. This distressing finding suggests that these pink dolphins could account for approximately 10 percent of their estimated population in Lake Tefe.
