Work and play and music

LMS plans spring cabaret

The contrast between work and play will be examined in the context of music, comedy, song, and dance when the Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) drama department presents “Stop, Time,” a spring cabaret event to be held on the LMS stage on Thursday through Sunday, April 20 to 23. Performances on April 20, 21, and 22 will be at 7 p.m., and the April 23 show will be at 3 p.m. All shows will be discounted for students.

Raising seed money

SEEDS, which stands for selfless love, empowerment, equity, deliberate partnership, and stewardship, is a new nonprofit serving the Conestoga Valley (CV) community. Focusing on education, health care services, and housing, SEEDS is now ready to kick off its first giving campaign for the purpose of growing

the organization’s funds, hiring employees, and renting office space.

“It’s a big giving campaign,” said SEEDS president, Michelle Kime.

“Our goal is $100,000 because we are dreaming big.” The campaign will kick off on Monday, April 17, and run through Friday, May 5.

“We are partnering with a bunch of local businesses because we want to be community oriented,” shared

Kime. Participating local businesses include Coffee Co., which will give 4% of sales each Tuesday from all four locations - New Holland, Lancaster Shopping Center, Lititz, and Mill Creek Square. Rachel’s Café & Creperie in Lancaster is creating a special crepe with sprouts, turkey, and cucumber, and $2 from each crepe sold will be donated, along with 10% of all sales on May 5. There will be a tip jar for SEEDS at

the register. Gracie’ on West Main in Leola will make a special spring cookie for SEEDS, and a percentage of profits from each cookie purchased will go to SEEDS. Stroopies, an organization that employs refugee women to create sweet treats, will raise funds through its website. Those who order using the code “CVSEEDS” will give 30% of the order price to SEEDS. Rohrer Seeds will participate as well.

“Stop, Time” will feature 14 cast members singing 14 songs from musicals and movies. According to director Dean Sauder, the first half of the show will focus on songs related to work and jobs. The first song will be “9 to 5,” associated with the movie and musical of the same name. Seniors Jinge Ma, Julie Eshenauer-Rivera, and Abby Brubaker, will each have a solo in the number. The second half of the show will begin with “Footloose,” also a movie and later a musical, to introduce the more playful subjects, followed by “Stop, Time” from the movie and show “Big.” The song is sung by Brubaker and Eshenauer-Rivera, playing two mothers who, according to Dean, “wish they could stop time and delve back into childhood a bit.” Eshenauer-Rivera will See

also solo on “Me and the Sky” from “Come From Away.” “Seize the Day” from “Newsies” will be performed by Micah Sauder, who will also sing “The Other Side” from “The Greatest Showman” with Caleb Metzler. The two will pair up again for “The Book Report” from “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Metzler will solo on “Trashin’ the Camp,” from “Tarzan.”

Dean pointed out that the songs are not chosen for their familiarity. “We try to do songs that people may not know,” he said.

Metzler said that the show will give audience members a chance to step back from their own lives. “(They can) reflect on the past and what (they) want from the future,” he pointed out.

Eshenauer-Rivera added, that she hopes the songs will give attendees a meaningful glimpse into the themes. “I think they will enjoy how work and play can go hand in hand, and in the second half enjoy the small moments that are really important,” she said.

While rehearsing for a show is hard work, the students who are taking part are finding the fun in their preparation. “I enjoy the singing,” said Ma, who added that time with her classmates involved in musical endeavors is fun to her.

Both Micah and Brubaker lauded the choreography Katelyn Coryell has designed for the program. Brubaker noted that the steps for “Footloose” and “9 to 5” “really match the energy of the song.” Esh-

enauer-Rivera will serve as student choreographer on “When I Grow Up” from “Matilda.”

Eshenauer said that working with the creative team, which includes Dean and Coryell, has been especially enjoyable. “It has been great to collaborate with Dean and Katelyn,” she said. “We have been allowed to offer creative input.”

Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be purchased at by calling the box office at 717-740-2456.

The Strasburg Seniors will meet on Wednesday, April 19, at 1 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Jackson St., Strasburg. A representative of CPRS will be the featured presenter, and the presentation will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Strasburg Seniors slate meeting

For three days in March, more than 200 middle school students got a firsthand look at careers in the construction industry at ABC Keystone’s Construction Wars. The students had the opportunity for hands-on work with industry professionals in the carpentry, masonry, sheet metal fabrication, electrical, plumbing and HVAC trades.

Represented schools in Lancaster and York counties included Garden Spot Middle School in Eastern Lancaster County School District; Gerald G. Huesken Middle School in Conestoga Valley School District; Manor Middle School in the Penn Manor School District; Warwick Middle School; Eastern York Middle School; Elizabethtown Area Middle School; Donegal Junior High School; The Janus School in Mount Joy; and La Academia Partnership Charter School. Construction Wars was held at ABC Keystone’s headquarters, 135 Shellyland Road, Manheim.

“We offer this event to provide middle school students with exposure and awareness of our industry and hopefully spark their interest as they are making decisions moving into high school,” shared Stephanie R. Larkin, vice president of education, safety and workforce development for ABC Keystone. Larkin explained that students created a variety of take-home projects during the event, including a sheet metal toolbox and a wooden bench. Additionally, they wired lightbulbs and created a circuit, laid brick, were introduced to basic safety and CPR and learned about refrigeration.

Now is the time for students to consider careers in construction, Larkin said, noting that the demand for trade skills grows annually. Average wages for some trades are $70,000 per year,

age 4 and over. Children age 3 and under may participate for free. Children’s activities will run from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m.

Preregistration for barbecue meals will be discounted and will close on Friday, April 14. Meals will be available for purchase for full price on a first-come, first-served basis during the event.

Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, will host the 27th annual Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) education conference on Wednesday,

June 21, from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will be available on a first-come-first-servebasis until Friday, June 9, and an early bird discount will be offered to school district and agency personnel who register before Monday, May 1. To register, visit www.iu13.com.

This year, the theme of the conference is “Agents of Change … Mission Possible.” The conference advocates for academic, social and behavioral growth in students by offering educational resources for parents and teachers alike. The organization hopes to shape students into productive citizens and prepare them for success in academic and professional pursuits.

At 8:40 a.m., keynote speaker Shelley Moore will explore the topic of inclusion and how it relates to educators. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Alberta, a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University and a doctorate from the University of British Columbia. She has collaborated with school

districts and community organizations worldwide to promote inclusion in classrooms.

Morning breakout sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and afternoon breakout sessions will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. The sessions will focus on different aspects of education to assist administrators, special educators, general educators, substitute teachers and parents of students.

During the morning sessions, presenters will address topics such as the usage of ecigarettes among students, the difference between decodable and leveled texts, techniques for educating students with autism spectrum disorder and how to creatively engage students with technology in the classroom. In the afternoon sessions, speakers will tackle issues such as managing exhaustion in both teachers and students, creating a safe environment for a diverse range of students and how to use innovative disciplinary practices. Presenters

will include education consultants, social workers, teachers and psychologists.

When IU13 first began to host the conference, it primarily focused on special education topics, but the organization decided to broaden the scope of subjects to include more areas of the schooling world. “A lot of conferences are geared towards a specific group, such as teachers or parents. This conference encompasses everyone; everyone can attend and find something relevant in a session,” said Linda Murr, program support liaison for IU13.

This will be the first IU13 education conference held since 2019, due to the cancellation of the event in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “A lot of people have been asking about when the event will happen again over the past few years,” Murr said. “We’re very excited to be bringing the conference back.”

For more information, call Murr at 717-606-1878.

SEEDS

“Our information will be in all those businesses, and we will promote each other,” said Kime.

SEEDS is already at work in the area of education, teaching free English as a second language (ESL) classes, which began on March 21, at Faith Church. According to SEEDS vice president Kristen Hershey, class size has tripled since the fall, and the current program is serving 24 adults and 20 children in four classes with more than 40 volunteers helping out. The next classes are scheduled for fall.

Kime noted that SEEDS is quickly running out of space at Faith Church, and the organization would like to find a rental in the CV area that would work for offices as well.

In the area of housing, SEEDS has connected with Good Samaritan Services and Homes of Hope, and in the health care sector, the goal is to provide medical and dental services from a central CV location.

SEEDS has been blessed with an automatic matching gift in the fundraising effort. “When we reach $20,000, we get to $40,000,” explained Kime, who noted that funds may be donated through the organization’s website at https://seedscv.com, as well as through the partnership efforts.

“We would love monthly givers because they sustain our budgeting,” said Hershey, who noted that gifts in any amount are welcome and that receipts for tax purposes are available.

Working with Ryan Glick at 513 Media, SEEDS is creating a promotional video that will launch at its website, as well as on Facebook and Instagram. “That will be ready in time for the giving campaign launch,” said Hershey. Readers can learn more about SEEDS by searching for “Conestoga Valley SEEDS” on Facebook or @seedscv on Instagram.

The groom-to-be graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2018 and is employed by Rufus Brubaker Refrigeration in Manheim. A May wedding is planned.

and apprentices participate in earn-while-you-learn programs, allowing them to access educational opportunities while working, with the potential to graduate debt free. She also emphasized that the industry provides multiple education and career pathways, ranging from apprenticeship to journey-level worker to business owner.

ABC Keystone has held the event for more than five years, and Larkin remarked that it requires support from the community to pull it off. “The event is only possible because we have 30 to 35 volunteers each day and very generous member sponsors who provide hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, Tshirts, construction materials and lunches, along with items for goodie bags,” she said.

The annual spring orchestra and band concert at LBC will feature community musicians performing music from a variety of genres and eras with LBC students. Set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, in Good Shepherd Chapel, the concert will feature the College Community String Orchestra, College Community Wind Ensemble, and Student String Quartet. In the world of sports there are many ways to shake off a loss. For some there are routines or superstitions they revert to, others a lucky item that needs adjusted but for many the comforts of home are all that is needed.

The Buckskin boys’ volleyball team went with option three, using the friendly confines of Rill Gymnasium for a 3-0 sweep of McCaskey on March 30th to shake off a loss to Warwick a few days prior. Drew Hultstrand was the star of the 25-11, 25-18 and 25-16 win, posting 27 assists to go with nine digs and three aces. Garrett Funck finished with one block and Tardibuono with 11 kills.

Conestoga Valley did not get to enjoy home too long with an April 4th match taking the Buckskins to Landisville for a battle with Hempfield. CV was up for the challenge,

shaking of a rocky stretch that saw them drop back-to-back games to leave with a 3-2- win.

Conestoga Valley opened with a 25-18 win and allowed the Black Knights to go up 2-1. Those two matches ended with Hempfield on top 25-22 and 25-23 but CV bounced back with another 25-18 victory, forcing a winner take all game five.

The ‘Bucks claimed the decisive game, 15-12, to secure the match. Hultstrand added 20 digs and one ace to his 41 assists while Carson Hoover finished with 22 kills. Rowan Aisenbrey matched Hultstrand’s 20 digs with Tardibuono adding 17 kills.

TENNIS

Moving outside, it has not mattered much whether the boy’s tennis team is at home or away, they have found the going tough in 2023. The Buckskins sit at 5-4 after a difficult 1-3 stretch that saw them fall to both McCaskey and Manheim Township by 7-0 finals. Sandwiched in between was a 6-1 setback to Hempfield where the duo of Fabian Heine and Boro Krstic claimed the lone win.

CV was able to right the ship a bit on April 5th, slipping by Cocalico 3-2. Heine and Krstic both played key roles in the win, just not as a duo. Heine, along with Michael Horst, accounted for two of the three team points

with singles victories. Krstic did his helping with another doubles win, this time pairing with David Berkley for the number two doubles win.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

‘You win some, you lose some’ is a popular phrase in the sports world but the CV boy’s lacrosse team’s recent two game stretch would fall under an odd offshoot of that line. On March 30th, the Buckskins dropped their game with Penn Manor by one goal, 8-7. Two days later the ‘Bucks were back at it, this time clipping Exeter by the same one goal margin, winning 10-9 in overtime.

Against the Comets it was a rough opening quarter that left CV fighting from behind the rest of the way. The slow start put CV behind by two scores where they stayed until the final frame. There Conestoga Valley was finally able to get the better of Penn Manor but the 2-1 edge was not enough to undo the early struggles. Jeff Fisher (3g-1a) and Hunter Silvaggio (4g) did the scoring while Soren Stoltzfus stopped 13 shots in goal.

Conestoga Valley kicked off April with that overtime victory on the 1st, using four goals from both Fisher and Silvaggio coupled with single scores from Tyson Zwaska and Isaiah Sensenig to secure the win. Stoltzfus turned away 11 shots to get his second win of the season.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The girls’ lacrosse team was unable to find a similar dose of mojo, remaining winless after losses to Penn Manor on March 30th and Hempfield on April 4th. Jamie Handwerger finished the 17-6 loss at Penn Manor with 11 saves and the 13-6 setback to Hempfield with another 13 saves. Sophia Hess continued her strong start with two goals in each game. Danae Ulrich

tallied three goals in the two games, double dipping against Penn Manor which was matched by Bella Miller in the Hempfield loss. Jordyn Hironimus totaled two goals, one in each game while Sophia Weiss finished things up with the final score against the Comets.

SOFTBALL

It may be early in the season, but the CV softball team sits atop the rough and rugged Section Two standings with a 2-0 mark. The Lady ‘Bucks collected the first win on April 3rd, rolling by Lebanon 17-0 in three innings. Rhiannon Henry covered the initial two frames to collect the win while Brylee Bateson finished things up in the circle. The pair combined for five strikeouts and allowed no hits, making things easy for the offense.

Henry collected three hits and two RBI, but it was Hollyn Helsel that carried the big bat, driving in five runs on two hits. Alexa Freeburn, Isabella Rodriguez, and Kaitlyn Humpreville joined Henry with two RBI each.

Conestoga Valley enjoyed another mercy rule win, taking out Gar-

den Spot by a 16-0 count on March 31st. Henry went solo for the win, covering all four innings, allowing no hits while striking out 11 Lady Spartans. The senior hurler helped her own cause with a two hit-four RBI day at the plate. Bateson and Rodriguez were joined by Emma Wanger in the two RBI club.

The Lady ‘Bucks needed the entire game to get by Ephrata on the 5th but did manage a 6-3 win. Henry covered all seven innings on the way to the win but just one of those three runs was earned thanks to four CV errors. Bateson led the offense with two RBI on three hits with Henry, Wagner, and Tori Rhoads accounting for the remaining RBIs.

BASEBALL

The baseball team finds itself atop the Section Two standings with a 6-3 win over Lebanon on April 3rd as the reason. Owen Fisher did his part with six strong innings that included 10 strikeouts. Brendan Bossert added one to that strikeout out tally while covering the final inning. Evan Wilson paced the offense with two RBI while Garrett Daniels, Jackson Esbenshade and Preston Fisher each pushed one run across.

The Buckskins were unable to solve the Comets of Penn Manor, falling by an 8-3 final on March 30th. Luke Landis joined Daniels in driving in a run to account for the CV offense. Jude Thompson took the loss for his five innings of work with Wilson and Evan Lapp covering an inning each in relief.

TRACK

The track and field teams hosted Lampeter-Strasburg on April 3rd where the boys posted a 97-53 win while the girls fell by a 78-73 final. Three different Buckskins posted double wins starting with Nick Tran in the 100m and 200m. Aidan Zimmerman pulled his double in the discus and javelin while Thabo Lautsbaugh earned his two wins in the long and triple jumps. Jordan Sensenig claimed the final field win, taking top honors in the high jump.

CV added relay wins in the 4x100 and the 4x400 for a quick 10 team points. Joey Castronova added a 400m win while Caleb Malari (110H) and Ben Eberly (300H) rounded out the first places.

For the Lady Buckskins only Brooke Denlinger was able to collect two wins, sweeping the hurdles with a 16.1 in the 100H and a 36.0 in the 300H. Outside of relay wins in the 4x100 and 4x400, the Lady ‘Bucks picked up just two more wins, Rylie Hershey in the 400m and Asha Marwaha in the 1600m.

LancasterHistory sets program

LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will host a lecture titled “Dutchirican” on Thursday, April 20, and in-person and virtual attendance options will be available. For those attending in person, the doors will open and a light reception will begin at 5 p.m. The talk will start at 5:30 p.m.

Lebanon Valley College (LVC) professors John Hinshaw and Ivette GuzmánZavala will discuss the history of Latin migration to central Pennsylvania, particularly that of Puerto Ricans, shedding light on a topic at the intersection of local, national, and global trends.

Through oral history interviews with area residents, Guzmán-Zavala, Hinshaw, and their students have documented the stories of Latin migrants who have come to central Pennsylvania, including the Tomateros, who picked fruits and vegetables in the 1950s, and more recent arrivals attracted by affordable housing.

The speakers will share the stories of these migrants, including their struggles with racism and the formation of communities that cross cultural lines.

Guzmán-Zavala is a professor of Spanish at LVC. She hails from Caguas, Puerto Rico, where she graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a degree in art education. She completed a Master of Arts at Syracuse University and her doctorate at Rutgers University. Her forthcoming book, “Maternidades puertorriqueñas,” examines visual and textual representations of biological and nonbiological mothers.

Hinshaw is a professor of history at LVC. Hinshaw hails from Columbia, Mo. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Macalester College in Minnesota and his Master of Arts and doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University. He has written or co-written three books on industrial and labor history in the United States and the world.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but those who wish to attend in person are encouraged to register in advance to guarantee a seat; tickets may not be available at the door due to capacity restrictions. Virtual attendees must also register in advance to receive the Zoom link.

For more information and to register, visit www.lancaster history.org or call 717-392-4633.

A symphony for students

In the beginning of March, Piggy Hill Art Studio, 2 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, kicked off The Orchestra Sings program for students to learn about classical music. Students meet every Friday at the studio to learn about different composers, classical instruments and orchestral concerts. The program will conclude with an interactive concert at McCaskey High School on Tuesday, May 16.

The Orchestra Sings is a music education program offered by Carnegie Hall’s

Weill Music Institute, which provides the curriculum to students across the country. The program is geared toward students in fourth through sixth grades; however, some younger students with previous musical experience are enrolled as well. Piggy Hill Art Studio has opened the classes to homeschooled children in addition to those in public or private school.

During the classes, students explore seven pieces of music, including pieces from India, songs in Spanish and Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” For certain pieces, students will

learn singing parts; for other pieces, they will learn how to play small instrument parts. The curriculum will introduce the kids to different melodies and rhythms, famous composers and orchestral instruments.

The concert at the end of the program will be interactive and has been designed for a younger audience. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will perform the pieces for a student audience, and each participating class will engage in a different aspect of each song. While some students will sing along, others will play melodies on recorders, and some will simply be involved by listening to the music. Musicians from the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will guide the students through the performance while its conductor offers the young musicians direction.

“None of the kids in my class have ever been to an orchestra before,” said Lori Rublesky, owner of Piggy Hill Art Studio. “Some of them have seen orchestras on TV before, but to have them learning about them and par-

So far, the students in her class have listened to a variety of compositions to learn about string, woodwind and percussion instruments and have focused on distinguishing different parts of a song.

Rublesky opened Piggy Hill Art Studio in 2022, but she has been teaching music lessons from her home in Drumore Township for several years. Rublesky still resides in the Southern End but wanted to open a studio in a less remote area to engage with the community more. In addition to its classes, Piggy Hill Art Studios offers live music, art courses, music lessons and community events such as a monthly barn dance. “Kids can come to develop their portfolios for college or hone their talents to get into a conservatory,” Rublesky said. “We have a lot of fun and some great teachers.”

Evening with Darryl Strawberry set

First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster, will host an evening with Darryl Strawberry on Saturday, April 22, at 5 p.m. Described as a baseball legend by many, Strawberry is now an ordained minister who is passionate about spreading a message of hope and helping others transform their lives.

Strawberry’s many accomplishments in baseball include four World Series titles, eight All-Star Game appearances, and a nomination to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004. Extremely successful in his career, Strawberry’s personal life was plagued with addictions, abuse, divorces, cancer, jail, and other issues. He is the author of numerous books, including “The Imperfect Marriage: Help for Those Who Think It’s Over” with his wife, Tracy Strawberry. In 2011, the Strawberrys founded

Strawberry Ministries, and they use their global reach to restore the multitudes through spiritual and practical life applications.

The evening will include dinner, a program, questionand-answer session, and autographs. A silent auction of sports memorabilia, event tickets, and gift cards will benefit Anchor Lancaster.

Guests are invited to a 30minute private reception with Strawberry at 4:30 p.m. for an additional fee.

There is a cost to attend the dinner event, and seating is limited. To purchase tickets, visit www.engagegodfirst.org and look under Events or call the church office at 717-394-7231.

In addition, the public is invited to hear Strawberry speak on Sunday, April 23, at 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. Each service will be followed by a meet-and-greet.
