Q: Will “Law & Order: Organized Crime” be back for another season? — Dan Goode, via e-mail

A: It will, but not until later. NBC is holding it back for mid-season, though the parent “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” will start the next season on Thursdays as usual (with the exact timing of that dependent on the effects of the writers’ strike). With that schedule for those two shows, and the fairly frequently crossovers among the series in the franchise, it’s entirely possible that Christopher Meloni will turn up in his Elliot Stabler role on one or both of those programs — especially given the character’s renewed ties to Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson — before “Organized Crime” makes its official return. The new drama “Found” will have that last hour of NBC’s Thursday schedule when the new season begins.

A walk in the ‘City’: TWD does NYC in ‘Dead City’

The world of horror is pretty equally divided when it comes to fan preferences about the undead. Fast-moving versus slow-moving zombies is one of the most controversial debates of the genre, with fans in each camp planted resolutely in their beliefs as to which one is scarier and why. One new series, however, is dedicated to bridging the gap — or at least appealing to both sides of the argument — by introducing some fast walkers into a traditionally slow-moving zombie franchise.

“The Walking Dead: Dead City” is the newest addition to the TWD universe and it premieres Sunday, June 18, on AMC and AMC+. With four other series having already premiered (many of which have also concluded) in the franchise, including “Fear the Walking Dead,” “The Walking Dead: World Beyond,” “Tales of the Walking Dead” and the original, “The Walking Dead,” it only makes sense for the newest series, “Dead City,” to up the stakes a bit.

The series derives its name partly for the flagship series and graphic novel, and partly from its unique setting. Despite most of the other TWD storylines taking place in relatively rural areas across the United States, “Dead City” follows two of the franchise’s most popular characters, Negan and Maggie (played, respectively, by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan of “Supernatural”) as they travel away from their familiar dwellings and into the wide, terrifying post-apocalyptic expanse of New York City in search of Maggie’s son, Herschel (Logan Kim, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” 2021). But just like everything else in the Big Apple, the walkers move a bit quicker.

“We’re in New York City,” said Scott M. Gimple, the original series’ former showrunner (seasons 4 to 8) and current chief content officer. “The tone of the story is a little different, the visuals are different.”

Collider also shared more information provided by Gimple, who appears to be keeping rather tight-lipped on the specifics to avoid giving spoilers.

“There are a number of horrific walkers, but there is a mind-bendingly horrific walker coming up that I wasn’t on set for, and I’m glad I wasn’t,” Gimple noted. “I got to experience the horrific magic at home, and it is magic. It quite possibly will make you throw up. I would just have something handy nearby as you watch it.”

But if gory walkers aren’t your bread and butter, fret not: there is plenty of very human drama to keep the plot rolling as well.

Don’t miss one of the most intricate, heart-wrenching and unsettling series in the TWD franchise to date. “The Walking Dead: Dead City” premieres Sunday, June 18, on AMC and AMC+. (And for those just beginning their “walk” in the TWD universe, so to speak, every episode of every season in the franchise is available to stream on AMC+. All 11 seasons of the original series are also available on Netflix.)

“Hijack” (Apple TV+ — Series Premiere, June 28)

This tense, seven-part thriller series, told in real time, follows the journey of a hijacked plane as it makes its way to London over a seven-hour flight, and authorities on the ground scramble for answers. While Sam Nelson (Idris Elba), an accomplished negotiator in the business world, steps up and uses all his guile to try and save the lives of the passengers, Zahra Gahfoor (Archie Panjabi), a counterterrorism officer, works the case from on the ground.

Tune up, tune in: New episodes of ‘Carpool Karaoke: The Series’ premiere on Apple TV+

Roll the windows down and turn the tunes up – traffic is getting a whole lot more fun for these music-loving drivers, when Season 6 of the Emmy-winning “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” premieres Friday, June 23, on Apple TV+.

“The Series” is based on the highly popular “Carpool Karaoke” segments originally featured on CBS’s “The Late Late Show With James Corden,” which first aired in early 2015, in which host James Corden takes a drive with some famously musical passengers, together singing songs as they bypass traffic in the carpool lane. In 2017, the segment found a home of its own on Apple Music, gaining its current title (“Carpool Karaoke: The Series”) and a new format, now with a new host each episode welcoming their close friends, cast members or family along for a musical adventure. Finally, in 2021, “The Series” found its forever home on Apple TV+, having received five consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety series by 2022.

Season 6 will keep the good tunes pumping, with this upcoming slate of episodes set to feature new faces such as Alanis Morissette (“Jagged Little Pill,” 1995), Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”), Avril Lavigne (“Sk8er Girl,” 2003), Cedric the Entertainer (“The Neighborhood”), Lea Michele (“Glee”), Alison Brie (“Community”), Darren Criss (“Glee”), YUNGBLUD (“Weird!,” 2020), Cara Delevingne (“Carnival Row”), Danny Pudi (“Community”), the casts of “Ghosts,” “Girls5eva,” “The Afterparty” and more.

Celebration spotlight: ‘Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom’ returns for second year

Returning for its second year, “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom” will broadcast live from The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday, June 19, airing for the first time in a dual simulcast between CNN and OWN.

The annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is now a nationally recognized holiday. Last year’s televised event was the first of its kind, a night featuring performances from acclaimed musical artists and icons, each playing in memorium and honor of the holiday. This year, the event recognizes Juneteeth’s 158th anniversary, with an initial list of performance artists including Miguel, Kirk Franklin, SWV, Davido, Coi Leray and Rodeci, with more expected to be announced. Grammy and Emmy winner Adam Blackstone and the co-founder of the Roots – Academy Award-winning filmmaker Questlove – are also set to headline as the evening’s musical directors.

Produced by a team of Black creators from Live Nation Urban and Jesse Collins Entertainment, the program will be broadcast worldwide on all CNN platforms, and nationally on OWN. CNN is also set to offer exclusive pre-show programming before the broadcast, highlighting Black trailblazers, advocates and creators. According to CNN, 2022’s special “attracted the #1 Black Audience in all of Cable and Broadcast Television for the 8p-11p timeslot.”

“We are proud to once again partner with Live Nation Urban to broadcast this powerful Juneteenth event on our platforms,” Chris Licht, chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide, said. “We want to be a destination for people to both understand and celebrate a holiday of this magnitude.”

Johnita P. Due, the executive vice-president of integrity and inclusion for CNN Worldwide, was quoted, saying: “I look forward to the electricity of the 2023 show. It is meticulously crafted as an expression of the excellence and resilience of the Black community and the ongoing pursuit of equality.”

President of OWN’s TV Network, Tina Perry, added: “We are taking this day to celebrate alongside American families and reflect on this historic turning point for our nation.”

The second annual “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration of Freedom,” broadcasts live Monday, June 19, on CNN and OWN.
