Former Auxiliary for the Archdiocese of La Plata and Archbishop of the Titular See of Rhasus, Monsignor Octavio Nicolás Derisi was a leading Thomistic scholar and philosopher.

A native of Pergamino, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentia, Derisi was the seventh child of an Italian immigrant couple. His father was a carpenter. Entering the Seminary of Villa Devoto at the early age of 12, he was ordained to the priesthood at 23 years of age on December 20, 1930.

Earning a Doctorate in Sacred Theology at 22 years of age, his first book, "La Constitución Esencial del Sacrificio Eucarístico de la Misa" was highly praised by the Holy See. Entering the Facultad de Filosofía de la Universidad de La Plata in 1934, his thesis "Los Fundamentos Metafísicos del Orden Moral" earned him the Premio Carlos Octavio Bunge while in 1945, he received the Primer Premio Nacional in Philosophy.

A frequent collaborator the "Criterio" review, he founded the Escuela de Filosofía de los Cursos de Cultura Católica, the "Sapientia" periodical and the philosophical review of the Universidad de La Plata. He lectured Medieval Philosophy, Epistemology and Metaphysics at the University of La Plata and later Philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires.

Obliged to leave the country during the Presidency of Juan D. Perón, upon his return to Argentina, he founded the Universidad Católica Argentina in March 1958, of which he served as rector until his appointment as Auxiliary for the Metropolitan See of La Plata by Pope Paul VI on November 16, 1970.

Receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Rhasus on the following December 19, from Archbishop Antonio José Plaza assisted by Archbishop Adolfo Servando Tortolo and Bishop Eduardo Francisco Pironio, in 1981, Pope John Paul II named him Assistant at the Pontifical Throne and consulter for the Pontifical Congregation for Catholic Education.

Member of the Academia Nacional de Ciencias Morales and president of the Consejo de Rectores de Universidades Privadas, Bishop Derisi published along the years 37 books. A leading intellectual, he retired from office at 77 years of age on May 24, 1984. Upon his retirement his Titular See of Rhasus was raised to an archbishopric "ad personam" by Pope John Paul II a rare honoreficence given to few prelates.

Monsignor Octavio passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2002, at 10.45 am., while recovered at the Sanatorio San Camilo at the venerable age of 95. Laid out in state at the Capilla del Rectorado of the Universidad Católica Argentina in Puerto Madero, Requiem Mass, presided by Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio SJ., was held at the Cathedral of La Plata on Wednesday, October 23, at 11 hrs. Interment was held inside the same cathedral at the chapel of the Santísimo Sacramento.
