KAMPOT: A pink dolphin, a rare and endangered species, was recently spotted in the saltwater estuary of Kampot province.

Kampot Provincial Fisheries Administration Director, Sar Sorin, confirmed to EAC News that this pink dolphin has been present in Cambodia for a long time.

He said that pink dolphins can be spotted in the Prek Tnaot and Changhon communities in Bokor city, Kampot province. He said that this species often appears where people are, and fishermen often find the dolphin swimming, playing and looking for food.

According to Sar Sorin, there are only about 15 to 20 pink dolphins left in Kampot province, and they are more than 20 years old.

He added that Kampot provincial authorities are cooperating with the Cambodian Marine Conservation Organization (MCC) to develop the Prek Chnoun ecotourism community, also known as Anlong Thom and Danghon community, to organize tourists to visit and see these rare dolphins.

He said that Kampot will be able to attract more tourists through these pink dolphin sighting tours.

The pink dolphin is listed on the IUCN Red List as a rare and endangered species. This dolphin can be found throughout Southeast Asia, including off the coast of South Africa, China and Hong Kong.
