The Time Machine

I hadn’t done anything in Blender for months, so I started a project to re-make a prop from the 2002 film The Time Machine. It took me 7 or 8 weekends to make, I have lost count. It is the most complex thing I ever made in Blender by several orders of magnitude, and I learned a lot about detail.

I put in as much detail as I could bear, and ended up making a few things that aren’t visible in the final render, like most of the battery bank console pictured below. I knew the display on the main console (above) wouldn’t be visible, but I just had to make it.

This prop might be the most excellent steam-punk contraption ever constructed.

Congrats on having patience in 3D modeling something so complex. I would die half way there

have you tried getting hired as 3D artist?

I haven’t. I only started on Blender to make art for my games.

Uuuu creating game assets, to be honest I hate that  hahaha, but if you like it then feel free to go because you will be great at it. I create 3D environment illustrations, and those are the ONLY projects in which I could last 7-8 weeks like you did on this project.

Really like the brushed look of the date counter wheels!

Very nice.

That’s a good depiction.

Were I to hypothetically critique this piece, I would say that it lacks a central focus. The geometry is rather fussy, and could be balanced out a little more by adding a component that was less complex but thoughtful with the materials / shading?
