Stands were first created in Stardust Crusaders, the third part of Jojo. Joseph Joestar first explains Stands as "apparitions created by [one's] own life energy" and that they gained the name because they "stand beside you." Out of universe, however, the story is a bit different.

The concept of Stands was unveiled for the first time in the third story arc of the JoJo manga series, Stardust Crusaders. A Stand is a psychic entity or avatar generated and used by its owner called, a Stand user. To a certain extent, the Stands are the reflections of their user's self-image.
