Description

POLISHING COMPOSITION CON- TAINING POLYVINYL-ALCOHOL AND GUM TRAGACANTH Gerard W. Meister, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Simoniz Company, a corporation of Delaware NoDrawing. Filed Feb. 19, 1959, Ser. No. 794,256
' 4 Claims. (Cl. 260-17.4)
i This invention relates to a combined cleaning and polishing composition adapted to be applied to a surface such as the finish on household enamelware, automobile bodies and similar surfaces.
This application is a continuation-in-part of my copending application Serial No. 701,705, filed December 10, 1957.
In polishing a surface such as that of an automobile body, it has been customary practice, to secure the most satisfactory results, to first use a cleaner on the surface to remove dirt, oxidized finish and other dull surface elements in order to. prepare the surface for polishing. Then after the surface has been cleaned, it is necessary to apply the polish, spread it uniformly, and rub it to a high luster.
The composition of this invention is easy to apply as it includesadispersant that is gaseous at ordinary temperaturesand pressures so that the composition is packaged in a container of the aerosol bomb type. Thus, thecomposition can be ejected as desired by means of its internal pressure from the container through a dispensing valve of the ordinary type preferably onto the desired surface or, if desired, onto a cloth for application to the desired surface.
One of the features of this invention therefore is to provide a combined cleaning and polishing composition comprising a luster producing agent preferably including a wax or wax-like material, water, an abrasive, an emulsifying agent and a propellant that volatilizes at ordinary room or ambient temperatures and pressures and which must be confined under pressure when at room temperature prior to dispensing the composition.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description of certain embodiments thereof.
The preferred composition includes from about 50- 80% of water, about 8-29% of luster producing agent, about -15 of finely divided abrasive, an emulsifying agent and a propellant that volatilizes at ambient temperature, all these percentages being by weight of the composition.
The luster producing agent may be a wax or mixture of waxes and may be a paraffinic hydrocarbon oil which may or may not be modified by the addition of a wax.
In the preferred composition the luster producing agent I is such a parafiinic oil in combination with a straight chain hydrocarbon wax of about 15-30 carbon atoms and preferably about 20 carbon atoms.
The composition of this invention comprises about 01-25 parts of a propellant that is gaseous at ambient temperatures and atmospheric pressures and about 99.9- 75 parts of a polishing composition, the polishing composition comprising about 50-80% of water, about 2-5 of glycerine, about 5-15% abrasive, about 8-25% of a liquid paraffinic hydrocarbon oil, about 0.2-1.0% of polyvinyl alcohol, about 0.1-5.0% gum tragacanth and about 01-05% of an emulsifying agent. The preferred composition includes in addition up to about 4% of a straight chain hydrocarbon wax, preferably paraflinic, containing 2 about -30 carbon atoms. All parts and percentages given herein are by weightjof the composition.
In a further preferred composition the hydrocarbon waxis paraffinic and contains about carbon atoms, the
abrasive includes diatomaceous earth and the emulsifying agent is an alkyl aryl sulfonate- An emulsifying agent that is found to be particularly useful is one made up'of equal parts of alkyl benzene sulfonate containing 13' carbon atoms in the alkyl group and sodium diisopropyl naphthalene sulfonate. The first of these is known as Nacconol NRSF while the second is known as Naccosol A.
The pressurized polish product includes about 0.1-25 parts by weight of a propellant that is gaseous at ambient temperatures and atmospheric pressures and about 99.9- 75 parts by weight of the polishing composition. The propellant may be nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, isobutane, nitrogen, compressed air, halogenated hydrocarbons such as theFreons made by E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company and low molecular weight alkane, or the like. The amount weight of propellants that are nonliquified in the pressurized container is near the bottom of the above-specified range. With liquified propellant in the pressurized container, the amount is preferably higher in the above range. Thus, with a propellant that is normally considered to be a gas, the amount is preferably 0.1-5 parts per 99.995 parts of the polishing composition while with a propellant which is normally considered to be a volatile liquid the amount is perefarbly about 5-25 partsper 95-75 parts of the polishing composition. All of these propellants are well known in the art with a. typical list being given in Boe Patent No. 2,524,590. Preferred Freons of the volatile liquid type propellants include dich-lorodifiuoromethane (Freon 12) and dichlo rotetrafiuoroethane (Freon 114) as well as many others that volatilize at ambient temperatures and that are well known in the art. These propellants may be blended to produce the desired vapor pressure in the container from which the polishing composition is dispensed.
One example of a polishing composition prepared according to this invention is the following:
Pale parafiin oil 15.55
Polyvinyl alcohol 0.41 Gum tragacanth 0.20 Nacconol NRSF 0.14 Naccosol 'A 0.14
The Eicosane is a water white mixture of predominantly straight chain parafiin hydrocarbon averaging 20 carbon atoms per molecule. Celite 315 is a natural, finely divided calcined diatomaceous earth.
The propellant for the above composition is a 50-50 mixture by weight of Freon 12 and Freon 114. This mixture is added to the above composition in an amount of 10 parts by weight of the Freon mixture to parts by weight of the composition.
The above composition may be prepared by soaking the gum for several hours in a portion of the water followed by mixing and emulsifying the ingredients in the total water by means of the emulsifying agent in the customary manner, filling the aerosol bomb type containers with the resulting emulsion and adding the stated amount of liquified propellant under pressure.
