Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REMEDY FOR COUGHS AND COLDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,564, dated March 29, 1881. Application filed December 22, 1880. (Specimens) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. SMITH, of Webster, in the county of Taylor and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and tion or Colds; and I do useful Improvements in Specifics for Consumphereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The nature ofmy invention relates to aremedy for colds and consumption and it consists in a compound of hickory-bark, rock-moss, burnt alum, and apple-brandy, compounded in substantially the manner and quantities hereinafter named.
In order that others mayavail themselves of the benefits of my discovery, I will now proceed to describe the mode of compounding and using the same. 1
I first take three pounds of-t he inside of hickory-bark and one-quarter of a pound of rock-moss, (Gymnostomum cm virostmnm) and" place them in a vessel containing two quarts of water, which I place over a fire and boil down to one quart. The hickory-bark and moss are then removed from the decoction thus formed, preferably by straining, and one ounce of finely-ground burnt alum is added and the decoction again allowed to boil about five minutes, after which it is placed in a bottle and allowed to stand twenty-four hours to cool. I then add apple-brandy in about the proportions of one gill of the deooction to one quart of the brandy, and after being Well shaken the compound is ready for use. It is valuable for coughs, colds, or consumption, and the proper dose forvadults or persons over thirteen years of age is one table-spoonful fifteen minutes before every meal, and for children one tea-spoonful taken in the same manner.
l Having thus fully described my remedy, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described remedy for coughs and colds, consisting of the combination of hickory bark, rock-moss, burnt alum, and apple-brandy, substantially as herein set forth.
