Description

PRES S ING COMB Filed Jan. 24, 1939 Att Patented a. 10, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in pressing combs of the type which are adapted to be heated when treating the hair and has for its primary object to provide, in
a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction and arrangement of teeth whereby comparatively short, kinky and coarse hair may be straightened by pressing without burning the scalp of the patron or the hands of the operator.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a pressing comb of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification,
taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a pressing comb constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through an intermediate portion of the device, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a handle I of substantially the shape shown to advantage in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, said handle being of any suitable material, such as wood. Mounted on the forward end of the handle I is a coupling 2 of solid metal. The coupling 2 includes an integral socket 3 on one end for the reception of a shank 4 which projects from the handle L. Screws 5 anchor the shank 4 of the handle I in the socket 3. It will thus be seen that the coupling 2 is firmly secured on the handle I.
Mounted on the coupling 2 is the head of the comb which is designated generally by the reference numeral 6. The head 6 is of suitable metal and includes a back 1. Formed integrally with the back 1 are teeth 8. It will be noted that the teeth 8 progressively decrease in length from the inner end to the outer end of the head 6.
The head 6 further includes an integral extension 9 on the inner end of said head. Projecting from the extension 9 is a reduced, threaded shank l0 which is adapted to be screwed to a socket H which is provided therefor in the 5 coupling 2. The reduced shank I0 provides a shoulder I2 which is engageable with the end of the coupling 2.
It is thought that the manner in which the device is used will be readily apparent from a con- 10 sideration of the foregoing, particularly to beauty operators or others skilled in the artto which the device pertains. Briefly, the hair is held between the tips of the thumb and fingers of one hand while the comb is held in the other hand, having been previously heated. The comb is inserted in the hair and given substantially onehalf of a turn upward thereby permitting the back I, which presses the hair, to come in contact therewith. The back 1 contacts the hair 20 close to the scalp where the pressing begins. The comparatively short teeth on the outer portion of the head 6 are used for pressing short hair. Thus, although the hair may be short, it
may be pressed without burning the scalp or fin- 25,
gers when the instrument is turned as above described.
It is believed that .the many advantages of a hot pressing comb constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood 30 and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall 35 within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A pressing comb comprising a handle, a coupling mounted on one end of said handle, said coupling being of solid metal and including an 40 integral socket on one end, the handle including a shank anchored in said socket, and a head mounted on the coupling, said head including a back and teeth projecting from the back, said teeth progressively decreasing in length from the 45 inner end of the head to the outer end thereof, an
integral extension on the inner end of the head,
and a threaded shank on said extension threadedly engaged in the coupling for securing the head thereto. 50
