Description

Spurnachlaufsteuerung für einen MagnetplattenspeicherTracking control for a magnetic disk storage

The invention relates to a control device for guiding a Magnetic head along a selected data track of a rotating magnetic disk in a .Magnet disk storage with the help of two cooperating servo tracks each, which periodically have sections of opposite magnetization, and their Signals sampled by a servo magnetic head to form the controlled variable for the actuator of the magnetic head to a differential amplifier are fed.

Die genannten Gründe machen es erforderlich, Steuereinrichtungen vorzu-Magnetic disk drives of this type are mainly used in data processing systems Use. Because of the ever-increasing amounts of data to which access is required in such systems, it is common practice to use interchangeable disk sets for these memories to equip, which are housed in cassettes and inserted as a whole in the storage device. A certain problem forms the task of aligning the magnetic heads of different storage devices exactly with the data tracks of the magnetic disks of the individual exchangeable cassettes, since here certain tolerances cannot be fallen below. On the other hand, efforts are being made to increase the storage capacity of each individual magnetic disk in that the data tracks be arranged as close as possible on the magnetic disk. The reasons mentioned make it necessary to provide control devices

sehen, durch die ein grob auf eine gewünschte Datenspur eingestellter Magnetkopf exakt entlang dieser Spur geführt wird.see through which a roughly set to a desired data track Magnetic head is guided exactly along this track.

The known servo controls of this type usually work in such a way that several cooperating servo tracks are provided in which periodically determined magnetization patterns are recorded * and a servo magnetic head by evaluating the scanning signals of the servo tracks in the middle between two servo tracks is guided.

The servo tracks can be arranged in a circle or in sectors. You can also switch between the data tracks on a magnetic disk be provided. Most common, however, is to provide a separate servo magnetic disk for the entire stack of disks, which is usually arranged in the middle of the plate stack.

The known servo controls of this type are consistently designed so that the two interacting from the scanning pulses Servo tracks a signal is obtained, the amplitude of which is proportional to the size of the deviation and its polarity indicates the direction of the deviation. This signal is fed to a differential amplifier, which then sends a control signal outputs the actuator of the magnetic heads. There are several ways to separate the signals from the two servo tracks to distinguish. By the German Offenlegungsschrift 2 051 it is known, for example, to offset the positive reversals of the two servo magnetic tracks which generate the servo signals to be arranged and gate circuits interacting with a clock generator to be provided, each of which allows the signals of one of the servo tracks to pass through.

Zum Ausgleich für die Schwankungen derThe signals of the servo magnetic head also fluctuate for other reasons, e.g. depending on its altitude the magnetic disk, the layer thickness of the magnetic disk or the degree of soiling. They are also on the radius of the one to be scanned Track dependent. To compensate for the fluctuations in

The latter type is already used in the servo control circuits an adjustable amplifier is provided which has a constant output voltage supplies. Such an arrangement is, for example, by the publication IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin / Vol. 13, No. 11, April 197.1, page 3386.

The known control systems assume that the signals and fluctuations that occur always occur symmetrically on both interacting servo tracks. Most of the time, however, this is not the case. For example, tolerances in the manufacture and installation of the magnetic head } polishing or turning marks in the magnetic plate, uneven abrasion or uneven soiling of the magnetic head can cause asymmetries. Asymmetries caused by the first two causes can be eliminated by replacing the components, whereas the last mentioned asymmetries always occur. The presence of such asymmetries has the result that the magnetic servo head generates signals from one of the servo tracks which do not correspond to its actual position, and this results in a shift in the zero point of the track position. Experience has shown that this shift amounts to a few percent of the track width in the current systems. However, since the position of the magnetic heads has to be controlled to 10% of the track width in order to avoid disturbances due to not completely erased recordings in this track and from crosstalk from neighboring tracks, a measurement accuracy of 1% is required for the servo control. It can be seen from this that the zero point shifts caused by asymmetries are particularly noticeable in the case of exchangeable disk sets that are alternately inserted into different storage devices.

The object of the invention is therefore to provide a servo control for the Specify tracking control of the magnetic heads of a disk storage, in which the fluctuations caused by asymmetries are eliminated and thus the disturbances caused by them are turned off.

According to the invention, this. The object is achieved in a control device of the type mentioned in that the circular servo tracks are impressed with a periodic oscillation with their deflections extending in the radial direction, and that the rectified scanning signals of each of the two interacting servo tracks each have a controllable amplifier with constant alternating voltage at its output can be fed, and that the low-frequency voltage components contained in the output signals of the amplifier can be fed to the inputs of the differential amplifier.

It is advantageous ff that the frequency of the servo tracks imposed oscillation at least an order of magnitude above the "upper limit frequency is the Spmrnachlaufregelung that all servo tracks are in phase modulated with the imposed vibration, and in that the radial deflection of the imposed oscillation less than half It is particularly advantageous if the modulation width of the imposed oscillation is 40% of the track width. It is also particularly advantageous that with an upper frequency of the drive control of about 300 Hz and a carrier frequency given by the magnetization pattern of more than one MHz the frequency of the oscillation impressed on the servo tracks is around 5 kHz /

Eine weitere vorteilhafte Ausbildung der Einrichtung besteht darin, daß die vom Servomagnetkopf erzeugten Abtastsignale der beiden zusammenwirkenden Servospuren, die-jeweils über einen Gleichrichter dem regelbaren Verstärker zugeführt werden, über ein Hoehpassfilter und einen Gleichrichter dem Regeleingang des Verstärkers zur Erzeugung einer konstanten Wechselspannung an seinem Ausgang zuführbar sind, und daß die Ausgänge der·regelbaren Verstärker jeweils über ein Tiefpassfilter den Eingängen des Differenzverstärkers zuführbar sind.circuits, each of which is the sampling signal and a clock signal the clock circuit is supplied, are separable from each other. There is a further advantageous embodiment of the device in that the scanning signals generated by the servo magnetic head two interacting servo tracks, each of which is fed to the controllable amplifier via a rectifier a high-pass filter and a rectifier to the control input of the Amplifier for generating a constant alternating voltage can be fed at its output, and that the outputs of the controllable Amplifiers can each be fed to the inputs of the differential amplifier via a low-pass filter.

To this end, it is beneficial that with the help of the measured control signals of the controllable amplifier asymmetries of the servo magnetic head or the servo tracks are detectable.

In Fig. 1, 1 denotes a magnetic disk of the magnetic disk stack of a magnetic disk storage. The stack of plates will driven by engine 2. On the magnetic disk. 1 are concentric Servo tracks 3 recorded, which are used to set the Magnetic heads of the memory on selected data tracks as well as for tracking control of the magnetic heads of a once selected Serve data track. The servo tracks can be in certain ring-shaped Areas recorded on a magnetic disk, which also contains data tracks. The servo tracks can also be accommodated exclusively on a magnetic disk, which then serves as a servo magnetic disk and is usually arranged in the middle of the disk stack.

For tracking control, those scanned by the magnetic head 4 are scanned Signals via line 8 of the illustrated in the upper part of FIG Control circuit 9 is supplied, which then emits a control signal to the linear motor 5 via the line 10,

The process of tracking control with the aid of the servo tracks arranged in a certain way on the magnetic disk 1 is described in detail below. For this purpose, reference is first made to FIG. 2. In this figure are two aneinandergreBzende, designated A and B servo tracks 16, 17 as Araf OCE magnetic disk 1 is recorded / displayed in a stretched ZeichnuBg. These tracks are arranged in concentric circular rings a, as indicated by the dash-dotted lines IS 17 19 ", and a periodic deflection in the radial direction is superimposed on each ring corresponding to the lower limit 20 r 21, so that the servo track 3 CFig« 1) "is superimposed on the scanning Magnetic head '4 opposite appears as a periodic oscillating movement. The oscillations superimposed on the individual circular servo tracks are phase-identical for all servo tracks. The frequency of this oscillation movement is so high? that the magnetic head 4 cannot follow the deflections of the superimposed oscillation because of its inertia and therefore maintains a position symmetrical to the center line. If, for example, the servo system can regulate fluctuations with a frequency "of the order of magnitude of 300 Hz at a speed of rotation of the magnetic disk of about 30 to 50 revolutions per second, then the frequency of the oscillation is 20, 21, with which the radial position of the servo track is modulated, about 3 to 5 kHz. The deflection of the oscillation corresponding to the boundary lines 20, 21, with which the servo track delimited by the lines 18, "19 is modulated, is less than half the track width, advantageously about 40% of that. So there is a kind of trembling movement that is superimposed on the servo track.

Die Magnetisierungsmuster sweier an-GE 973 001In the servo tracks 16, 17 patterns are periodically more opposed Magnetization 22, 23 recorded, which in the figures with (+) and (-) are designated. einandergrenzender Servospuren A und B sind, wie durch die Trennungslinien 24-, 25 angedeutet, jeweils um die halbe Länge der Magnetisierungsbereiche gegeneinander versetzt angeordnet. A and B are, as indicated by the dividing lines 24-, 25, arranged offset from one another by half the length of the magnetization areas. In FIG e 2 are the widths of magnetic domains 22, -23 greatly enlarged. In fact, there are at least several hundred or thousands of magnetic flux reversals for one modulation oscillation. The carrier frequency which is caused by the magnetic flux reversals is in the order of magnitude of 1 MHz.

The magnetic head 4 is ideally if there are no deviations occur, guided by the servo control in the middle between two servo tracks. The path covered by the Magnetic head 4 is shown in Fig. 2 by the hatched, dashed lines 26, 27 shown. In the event of a discrepancy from this central position, in the control circuit 9, the magnetization in the magnetic head 4 when sweeping over the magnetization pattern of the servo tracks generated scanning signals formed, which then via the line 10 to the linear motor 5 to Correction of the tracking is fed.

The control circuit 9 is able to compensate for inequalities in the symmetry caused, for example, by uneven wear of the magnetic head or through faulty places, such as longitudinal grooves, to compensate and also in such cases to guide the magnetic head in the middle between two servo tracks.

Es ist hierbei zu beachten, daß die die Äbtastsignale erzeugenden Flußübergänge der Servospuren A und B gegeneinander versetzt sind.(not shown) synchronization means able to recognize whether a certain scanning signal of the magnetic head 4 from an even-numbered servo track A "or from an odd-numbered Servo track B originates. Accordingly, the clock circuit 32 gives an output signal to the gate circuit 34 via the line 37, when a signal of a track A occurs and via the line 38 a signal to the gate circuit 36 when a signal of a track B is present, the clock circuit is on line 39 with Synchronizing means in connection, which also serve to determine whether the magnetic head is between an even Track A and an odd-numbered track B or between an odd-numbered one Lane B and an even-numbered lane A is located. Such devices are known per se and therefore not described. At the output 40 of the gate circuit 34 thus occurs Signal on when a scanning signal of a track / A is present, Eberiso occurs at the output 41 of the gate circuit 36, a signal when a scanning signal of track B is present. It should be noted here that the flux transitions of the servo tracks which generate the scanning signals A and B are offset from one another.

The signals appearing at the output 40 of the gate circuit 34 are fed to the rectifier circuit 42, in which a rectification the carrier frequency of about 1 MHz generated by the magnetization pattern. The one at the output 43 of the rectifier 42 occurring signal sequence, as it results from Fig. 2, is shown in Fig. 3A in a voltage-time diagram, Positive signal pulses 44 result from magnetic flux reversals from + to -, e.g. corresponding to the boundary lines 24. Negative signal pulses 45 result accordingly in magnetic flux reversals from - to +, e.g. according to the Border lines 25. The envelope curve 46 of the pulses 44 and the rectified pulses 45 'shows an alternating voltage, the one DC voltage is superimposed.

Zur Verstärkungsregelung wird das Aus-The output signals of the rectifier 42 are fed to the regulated amplifier 47. For gain control, the output

The output signal of the amplifier 47 is simultaneously fed to the high-pass filter 49 via the line 48. The one passed by the filter 49 AC voltage is rectified in the rectifier 50 and fed via the line 51 to the amplifier 47 as a controlled variable. Through this it is achieved that the same AC voltage always occurs at the output 52 of the regulated amplifier 47, regardless of the Size of the signal scanned by the magnetic head 4.

According to the output signals of the gate circuit 34 for the tracks A, the output signals of the gate circuit 36 for the Tracks B fed to the rectifier 56. The signal sequence occurring at the output 57 of the rectifier 56 is corresponding in FIG. 3B of Fig. 2 shown. Positive pulses 58 result from the flux reversals from + to - and negative pulses 59 result from the river reversals, from - to. -f-. The envelope 60 of the pulses 58 and the rectified pulses 59 'is again an alternating voltage, on which a direct voltage is superimposed is. The signals at the output 57 of the rectifier 56 are in the same way as the signals of the tracks A. fed to the regulated amplifier 61 for the high-pass filter 62 and the rectifier 63 a control voltage is generated, which is fed to the amplifier via the line'64 wirdo For the scanning signals of the tracks B, an output signal sequence is thus also produced at the output 65 of the regulated amplifier 61 generated, which is independent of the size of the scanning signal.

The outputs 52 and 65 of the regulated amplifiers 47 and 61 each form the inputs of the via a low-pass filter 66, - 67 Differential amplifier 68, the output of which on the line 69 to the amplifier 70 and from there via the line 10 as a manipulated variable the linear motor 5 is supplied.

The equally large and constant alternating voltages 71 and 72 are the DC voltages 73 and 74 superimposed on the differential amplifier 68 are fed. Both DC voltages are the same. The resulting output on the line 69 is therefore equal to zero, so that the linear motor 5 is not supplied with a new control signal.

In jedem Falle sprechen die regelbaren Verstärker 47, 61 an, und bringenIn Fig. 5 is with the same arrangement of servo tracks as in Fig. 2 shows the case that the magnetic head 4 is in a in relation to the center of the two servo tracks. The hatched boundary lines 26, 27 indicated path of the magnetic head runs to a larger one Part in track A and to a lesser extent in track B. The now occurring at the output of rectifiers 42 and 56 Signal sequences are shown in FIGS. 6A and 6B according to FIGS. 3A and 3B. It can be seen that now in track A all amplitude values are enlarged compared to the symmetrical position, while the corresponding amplitude values of track B. have become smaller. Therefore, at the output of the regulated amplifier 47, 61, as shown in FIGS. 7A and 7B shown, AC voltages 75, 76, which are unchanged with respect to the symmetrical position, but to which DC voltages of different magnitudes are superimposed. The direct voltage 77 originating from the A track is greater than that originating from the B track DC voltage 78. The differential amplifier 68 thus receives over the low-pass filter 66, 67 has two input signals of different sizes and therefore gives an output signal other than zero from, which is fed to the linear motor 5 via the line 10 for correcting the track position. This signal disappears again when the magnetic head has reached the middle position between two servo tracks again. This middle position is adjusted with the help of the adjustable Amplifiers 47 and 61 are also achieved if, for example, an uneven The magnetic head is worn, or the magnetic track is unevenly worn or dirty. In each Case speak to the controllable amplifier 47, 61, and bring

die Wechselspannung auf einen konstanten Wert, so daß sich als Eingang für den Differenzverstärker 68 auch in diesem Falle dieselbe Gleichspannung ergibt, wie wenn keine unsymmetrische Abweichung der Äbtastsignale aufgetreten wäre.the AC voltage to a constant value, so that the input for the differential amplifier 68 is the same in this case as well DC voltage results, as if no asymmetrical deviation the scanning signals would have occurred.

If different control voltages occur at the control inputs 51, 64 of the amplifiers 47, 61, this is a sign of one
Imbalance of the magnetic head or the magnetic disk. A criterion for the selection or replacement of the components can also be derived from this.
