After 16 years together and five years of marriage, Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa have decided to go their separate ways.

The longtime couple announced that they are in the process of divorcing via a joint statement on Momoa’s Instagram account on Wednesday as Bonet does not have any social media. “We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times…A revolution is unfolding and our family is of no exception…feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring,” their message began. “And so we share our Family news that we are parting ways in marriage.” The former couple continued, “We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy, but so that as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty. The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become…Our devotion unwavering to this sacred life & our Children. Teaching our Children what’s possible. Living the Prayer. May Love Prevail.”

The two actors first began dating in 2005 after they were introduced by a mutual friend at a jazz club. “We just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” Momoa told James Corden on The Late Late Show in 2017 shortly after their marriage. “I actually had dreaded my hair for her. I had dreadlocks, she had dreadlocks. I literally turned around and I see her and she goes, ‘I’m Lisa.’ I turned around to my friend and I [scream]. I had fucking fireworks going off inside, man. I convinced her to take me home, because I was living in a hotel.” They wound up getting a Guinness and a meal together after that, “and the rest is history,” he said.

In 2007, the couple welcomed their first child, Lola, and had their second child, Nakoa-Wolf, arrived in December the following year. Bonet is also mother to actress Zoë Kravitz whom she shares with her ex-husband Lenny Kravitz. Momoa has always been extremely enthusiastic about their relationship in interviews, telling Esquire in November 2019, “If someone says something isn’t possible, I’m like, ‘Listen here, I married Lisa Bonet. Anything is fucking possible.’”
