Arts & Crafts and Design: From William Morris to Frank Lloyd Wright

Matsumoto City Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

William Morris, Frank Lloyd Wright et al.
William Morris (1834-96) was a leading 19th-century British poet, thinker, and artist known as the "father of modern design. Morris sought to revive the handmade production activities of craftsmen, which had been lost after the Industrial Revolution. He also incorporated the beauty born of such careful handiwork into people's daily lives, advocating a "beautiful life" that integrated art with everyday life. The Arts and Crafts Movement was developed by designers and architects who sympathized with these ideas.

In 1888, the first Arts and Crafts exhibition was held, led by Walter Crane (1845-1915) and others. With the continuation of this exhibition, the Arts and Crafts movement spread throughout the United Kingdom, then Europe and the United States, and finally to Japan. This movement, which ushered in modern design, still lives on today in many parts of the world.

This exhibition introduces approximately 170 works by Morris and other British artists, as well as works by Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), a leading 20th-century architect and symbol of the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States.
