NOTES
Lucian Freud presents a female form reclining on a cot in a barren interior space. The receding perspective of the composition gives the woman’s body a commanding, fleshy presence in the foreground of the painting. Using a thick buildup of paint on the canvas, Freud depicts subtle gradations of skin tone illuminated by bright light. Taking hours to record the specific physical traits of his live models, the artist also conveys his subjects’ emotional states.
