Carmen of Mairena (Carmen de Mairena)

An original 6-episode Podcast-Audioseries published by Storytel

The story of Spain’s most famous lips.

This is the story of a woman who wanted to be who she was: an icon in pop culture and a reference in the struggle for historical justice and visibility for the trans community.

Miguel de Mairena was born in the early thirties and wanted to be an artist since he was a child. The gramophone becomes his first artistic partner. With it, he spends his childhood and adolescence singing duets with all his idols. When he turned sixteen, he convinced his mother to take him to the Ambos Mundos hall in Barcelona’s Paralelo (Barcelona’s Broadway), a venue looking for new talents.

In the early seventies, Miguel was already a regular at Paralelo’s clubs and began to dabble with cross-dressing, although only on stage. In the eighties, his career takes a turn and his popularity increases to the point of working with Antonio Amaya, one of his great idols. It is at this point in his life that Miguel’s transformation to Carmen de Mairena begins. He chooses to name himself Carmen after the woman he admires the most: Carmen Amaya, Spanish dancer, singer and actress considered to be the most extraordinary flamenco dancer of all time.

Carmen de Mairena’s success becomes indisputable. She performs in shows and makes movies, but she truly achieved fame when she took part in the successful Spanish TV show Crónicas Marcianas. Her career doesn’t stop there: she goes from television popularity to porn movies, to documentaries and even to politics, becoming a candidate for the presidency of the Catalan Government, facing Artur Mas himself and the newcomer Albert Rivera.

Carmen’s life gradually began to fade away in 2012. At the age of seventy-five, she began to suffer a series of setbacks, two strokes, an eviction, a hip operation and even a lawsuit. However, she maintained such strength that this did not prevent her from continuing to perform some gigs when possible until the day of her death in 2020.
