This game caught my eye while I was searching around for games during Steam's Autumn Sales. At first glance, I didn't think much of it but you know me, I like doing research on games I've never heard of and I'm glad I did because I found a hidden gem!

Developed by Climax Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios, this was a western action RPG with JRPG influences for the original Xbox which came out for NA and EU in 2004. EU getting a PC port in 2005, then a world wide PC release in 2014 on GOG (Delisted) and Steam! From what I researched I realized there was more to this game than meets the eye with cult fans singing praises of the game. It got me curious so I decided to pick it up myself, it was only $6 bucks.

latest

Given how old the game was, I was expecting to have to mess around with it to get it to launch but no, it just worked! I was also expecting jank, and I was wrong there too. The game plays surprisingly responsive and graphically speaking, I think it still holds up even today. There are some moments where the characters might look odd and times where they look perfectly fine. Maybe it's due to the games lighting system?

You play as someone named Tal and you start in a place called Illumina Castle. This is basically the tutorial area where you get acquainted with the map, the combat, how quests work and shops work. The NPC's seem to all be fully voice acted, at least the ones I spoke to, and it sounded pretty decent.

C2629C22D04CCAD91A9D4AE878E7FCB6D8888BF2

Not long after, I was sent out on patrol with two recruits by General Arlo to clear out a path from some skirmishes happening outside the castle. Following the path a little from the castle gates, you encounter some enemies known as the Aklorians.

Tal has a large number of moves at his disposal. You have Vertical attacks, Horizontal attacks, Skills, and a Sweeping attack which is basically a 360 crowd control move. You can even Block and dodge sideways or backwards. I recall hearing or reading a comment that the game is Fable on steroids and despite this game coming out first, I can understand where the comparisons are coming from.

Here's the neat part, you can mix & match three vertical attacks and horizontal attacks to create combos. This means Tal's attacks consist of:

Combo 1: A > A > A
Combo 2: X > X > X
Combo 3: A > X > X
Combo 4: X > A > A
Combo 5: A > X > A
Combo 6: X > A > X
Combo 7: X > X > A
Combo 8: A > A > X

You get the idea! Then you have your skill, Shin Splitter, which actually appears on the ground as a red AoE cone in front of you, like something you'd see from telegraphed World Boss attacks in an MMORPG. This blew my mind when I saw it.

Unfortunately the two recruits that were with me died from an ambush so I had to fight alone and they throw a bunch of enemies at you. What caught me off guard was how challenging the first several encounters were because you have melee enemies charging at you from the front and ranged enemies shooting at you from a distance.

Luckily the game gave me a lot of healing items as drops and they can be found from breakable objects out in the world too. I made my way to a new type of enemy that hit me VERY hard and explodes upon reaching low health. I got caught by this several times leaving me at 1 HP.

As I made my way through the enemies, I noticed some areas I couldn't climb or interact with but I suspect I'll be coming back once I obtain new party members given that Tal has the ability to move heavy objects with his strength. Eventually I reached the big bad boss, a giant ogre making short work of these castle guards.

76EE99E62FC1EB13C8D5C047B18D4CDB635E8EB5

This guy wasn't too bad, he likes to stick close to you. The secret sauce here is baiting and dodging sideways to avoid its attacks, then going in with some attacks of your own.

After defeating this boss, a spirit appears and gives Tal power, granting him access to his first Special Gauge move and new armor. For losing the two men under Tal's command, General Arlo sends him to escort the princess back to the castle who currently resides in a nearby town called Brightwater. I knew right away this was going to be a new party member so I rushed right on over there.

FC9AD8DA85B4B505905E4258094AA43F7F50C21B

I spent some time doing quests here, looking for any treasure chests hidden around town as well. It didn't take long for me to meet my first real party member, Ailish, who looks like a spell caster. You can switch between Tal and Ailish on the fly with the Left/Right bumpers.

One of the quests I accepted earlier wanted me to go to a beach near town to recover some lost items so I made my way there. Leaving Brightwater, I was greeted with a tutorial for Ailish. Things got even more interesting...

vaultboyholdup.jpg

Alright, Sudeki, I see you! You mean to tell me playing as Ailish turns the combat into a first person shooter? I love where this is going! You can see Tal back there running around keeping the enemies busy while I shoot them!

Ailish can shoot spell bolts from her staff AND switch to another staff that shoots out arcs of lighting to stun enemies up close. Like Tal, she has skills at her disposal like Witch's Kiss which heals the party, and another skill that puts an AoE effect on the ground in a straight line! Flippin cool!

Now for something negative because so far I've been singing praises about Sudeki. As you can tell from the box art, the female characters in this game wear scantily clad apparel, which I guess makes sense for the time period this released. I can definitely see this being a huge turn off for some people.

With that said, I am genuinely impressed and excited, with what I'm playing. This game has been nothing but surprises one after another!

Any Sudeki fans here on era?

Apparently I have the game in my Steam library, not sure from where, lol.

OP, your review/preview sounds pretty good, going to give it a shot, hopefully it works in the Deck as well.

I played it years ago when I rented it. Bought a copy this year and am planning to beat it sooner than later. From what I recall, it was excellent.

I played it about 5 years ago on Steam and was pleasantly surprised by it for the most part. The designs as already mentioned are a bummer but the game is still pretty fun if you can ignore that.

I remember trying this game because the box art was horny. I didn't get much far into it. I don't remember if I dropped the game because I thought it was bad or because I got distracted by another game.

I haven't tried it on the Steam Deck yet, but let me know how that goes! :)

Ahh I was just speaking about this with a friend of mine who used to work at Climax. Very cool game!

I don't remember it too well but seeing the screenshots in the OP brings back some fond memories.

I played this on release on the xbox. I was super jazzed for it and I mostly enjoyed it. I can't bring myself to try it again these days as I think I wouldn't get much out of it.

Oh hey, that's pretty cool! While I was doing research on this game, I came across a few things.

One being the game sort of ends on a cliffhanger which gives the impression on a sequel? I've no idea if this is true, I'll need to play to the end to find out! The other being there was cut content? I'm not too surprised on the cut content bit, a lot of games ship with stuff getting cut out.

I definitely didn't finish it personally so I've never seen the ending but it's indeed a shame that we didn't get a sequel.

Climax is actually still going, that studio has been open for 35 years. I didn't know that until recently, pretty incredible.

I looked them up on the Steam store page.

Looks like they helped develop Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia, Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India, and a few other games I'm not familiar with. Pretty impressive!

Yeah I think they're mostly a support studio now and work on a lot of smaller titles.

They were acquired by Keywords in 2021, which is the bigger corp that owns a lot of game related support studios. The UX studio I used to work for was owned by them too.

Yes. The ending is very rushed and definitely trying to setup for a sequel. It just ends abruptly.

I remember playing this back in the day on a Pentium 4.
Had quite some fun with it, but unfortunately got to a point where the game kept crashing so i could never finish it.

Bought it a few years ago on a Steam sale hoping to play it again, but never had the time (or priority) to do it.
Still, It's good to know that it runs without issues on modern systems.

Ah, that's a shame.

Is there a reason this game isn't backwards compatible on Xbox? Lack of interest?

Good question, there's still many Xbox games out there that didn't recieve backwards compatibility support. Like Tenchu Z. :(

I remember the unappealing art from when it originally launched, but I have heard decent things about it over the years.

Apparently I own it on Steam, probably from some random bundle. I should give it a shot.

Damn, things were going well too. Got my first crash to desktop about an hour ago.

There's a part where you only play as Ailish and while I was on my way to Shadani-Mo, the game crashed on the first battle encounter in King's Road. Restarting the game fixed it and I was able to progress. Things were going well until I made it to Woluf Valley, I didn't notice that part of the level was missing and I ended up falling off the edge into the void, lol. Reloading a previous save fixed the issue.

Guess there's still a few bugs in the game, I better make a bunch of saves.

Ohhhhh damn, I remember this. Thanks for the nostalgia trip OP!

I used to try out a lot of random JRPG inspired games like this. Some were better than others. Sudeki was definitely creative with gameplay, but the plot and the teenage fan-art quality character design eventually lead to me getting bored with this title and giving up.

Better than Ephemeral Fantasia.

Worse than The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age.

EDIT: Summoner 1 and 2 are a couple of semi-decent and oft-forgotten RPGs from this era too, that I'm pretty sure had PC releases.

It's ALWAYS in some kind of bundle on fanatical. That's where I remember getting it from.
OP you write up is really making me want to finally try it out. It's been in the back of my head to try out for years.

I remember being a kid trying to get hyped for this game because Xbox had virtually no JRPGs at the time, but I gave up on it when my bro kept calling it Suckdeki. Now that I've got no shortage of RPG options I'd be hard pressed to go back for this one, though.

I played through this game on the original Xbox years ago, well up to the final boss anyway (I died and didn't want to bother trying again). It was an ok game up to that point though.

Apparently I own it on Steam too, I guess it was cheap or something. This is making me want to install it again.
Though I can still hear "you can't resist my healing kiss" in my head, maybe it can wait a few more years.

I wrote about it (specifically about a balance issue) here:

Broken & Overpowered Video Game Characters

Treasure Hunters in last year's Dungeon Encounters. They don't just steal your gold. They don't even reduce your gold to zero. No, They steal so much that you can literally have negative amounts of gold. That's right. This the first foe in gaming history who can put you in student debt.

Overall, an underrated game.

Lol, sounds like he's super powerful!

I think I'm getting close to where he joins my team. Right now I'm in an Ailish only segment, just reached a town where I had to get a spear to enter sacred grounds of some sort.

Alright, progress has been made! Finally got to play Buki and Elco!

Ailish meets up with Tal, Buki, and Elco at the village of Shadani-Mo. From there they enter a temple gone rogue, filled with monsters. Buki is a melee fighter like Tal, so she has all those combo routes I jotted down in the OP. I forgot to mention this earlier too, but Ailish has the ability to see hidden objects/invisible walls. Buki's unique ability is climbing moss covered walls! This will be very handy when I backtrack to the earlier areas of the game.

F1A72C3C49BD56F53E7BD5CAE0396B5611A6652B

As for Elco, he plays similarly to Ailish! Combat turns into a first person shooter and he has access to two different guns. A blaster, and a laser pistol that can pierce through multiple enemies. His skill set is interesting, having both damaging AoE attacks and the ability to buff the party. I can see why he's considered OP, Stef lol.

DECE784EDE125E90E8C882E990DF56614F1CA7DE

Unlike the other characters who have rather grounded unique abilities, Elco can fly. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this, lol. He obtains fuel from nearby crystals which allows him to do so.

A58CCCFA34C72693CF82D9ACB4C3AA28D86B39D3

Backtracking a bit, you enter this temple separately in pairs.

You play as Tal and Ailish in the lower levels of the dungeon while Buki and Elco take on the higher floors. The spider enemies I encountered here were pretty annoying. They can poison you AND slow down your movement/attack speed. The debuffs last quite awhile too...

There are other enemies here that can be a pain in the ass but I was able to make it to the boss who was actually super easy to figure out and beat.

After the fight I got sent to a mysterious realm where the difficulty got challenging again. Whatever this place is, the enemies here are no pushovers. I set Tal and Buki on Defense while Ailish and Elco go on Offense. I actually had to start using my stronger healing and SP recovery potions.

The cool thing though is that I finally have the gang all together!

I made it to the point where the gang splits again.

This time it's Ailish with Buki, and Tal with Elco while on the way to Transentia. This is Elco's hometown, home to high tech robots and machines. Oh, and this thing.

This robot has been kicking my ass. You fight it in a small arena and it is tough! He has a move that one shots you if you aren't careful.

EDIT: Ah, the trick is just not to be overly aggressive. Managed to beat him!

Oh, I played this game a looong time ago on PC. I don't know if my version was bugged or not, but I was surprised at the ending where

after you land the last hit on the final boss, he just drops to the ground and the credits immediately start rolling. No ending cutscene or anything.

I also liked one late-game thing where you
meet "parallel" versions of your party members.

Apart from that, I don't remember much of the game, but overall I had a lot of fun with it.

It does open up later. You'll come across some areas with chests you can't reach and will need to come back later with other party members and eventually you will unlock the ability to teleport around.

Cool, I might give it another run in the next weeks then. While the character designs are not my cup of tea, I like the simple yet colorful artstyle.

I just beat the game! People weren't lying when they said the game ends abruptly, lol. Despite that, I give the game an 8/10!

Sudeki is genuinely a great game that puts a unique spin on RPG's and deserves a play through if you haven't already. However, its character designs and some dialogue that is spoken is a product of its time and can be seen as a turn off for some.

A few gripes, I encountered about three bugs on my play-through that a restart or reload of an older save had to fix. Another issue I had was setting up my quick slots for items. It never seemed to work as I expected it to which was a little frustrating.

That said, I would have liked to see what the original characters looked like and the Japanese box art for all regions. Oh, and I think this game deserves a sequel. :)
