Things That Freud Was Right About

I believe Sigmund Freud was right about a lot of things, which often surprises the entrepreneurs I coach. Despite some of Freud's ideas being seen as controversial or even anti-feminist, I firmly believe that he offered the world some fascinating insights that still have significant implications today.

  1. The Undeniable Impact of Early Childhood: Freud was a pioneer in stressing the importance of early childhood experiences, long before the significance of these formative years was universally acknowledged. He believed how children navigated through various developmental milestones had long-lasting implications for their psychological structures. Contemporary research, especially in the field of developmental neurology and through neuroimaging studies, has largely vindicated Freud's ideas, underscoring the imprint early life experiences leave on us.

  2. The Complexity of Our Psyche: Freud introduced the ideas of the id, ego, and superego, representing the conflicting parts of our psychological structure. This internal conflict, the continuous struggle between our primal desires, rational selves, and societal morals, intricately shapes how we navigate the world. Modern psychological approaches like the Internal Family Systems model still draw heavily on Freud's ideas, illustrating how different parts of us, each with unique drives and motivations, influence our actions and priorities.

  3. The Power of the Unconscious: The third key aspect where Freud's insight was invaluable is the concept of the unconscious. As entrepreneurs, we like to think of ourselves as logical beings, yet there's always a part of us - our unconscious - that influences our decisions in ways we may not fully comprehend. Freud led the way in understanding these unseen forces within us, using techniques like dream analysis and free association to explore the unconscious mind.

While Freud's insights can be valuable for those aiming to do amazing things in their lives, exploring our unconscious mind and identifying our blind spots is challenging to do alone.

I agree! I was so surprised when my 19-year-old's college psych professor told the class that Freud was irrelevant. Not only is it relevant, but many of his theories hold true if we apply them to modern thinking. And he paved the way to Bowlby and the Object Relations Theorists too!
