Cynthia Nixon is very aware of the fan backlash toward the transformation her Sex and the City character, Miranda Hobbes, is undergoing in the HBO reboot And Just Like That.
The actress and producer of the series defended Miranda's new storyline in a recent interview on The Drew Barrymore Show. Fans be warned: Spoilers lie ahead.
As AJLT nears the end of its premiere season, Miranda has told her husband (fan-favorite Steve Brady, played by David Eigenberg) that she wants a divorce as she explores a romance with Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), a nonbinary comedian who is the podcast boss of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker). Introducing Che seems to be the series' attempt to make up for the problematic handling of queer characters in the past, but some fans see Miranda's choices as out of character.
Nixon told Barrymore that Miranda is "so overwhelmed" and has been thrown "off-kilter" by her attraction to Che. "When you put a negative spin on it, you can call it a midlife crisis, right? But out of crises come really productive things, and it's like you're not young anymore, but you're not old either, and you still have time to make sure that your life is the way you want it to be," Nixon said. "If you're deeply unhappy in your career choices, and you're really deeply unhappy in your marriage, you should look at it and demand more."
She added that Miranda's decision to divorce Steve isn't entirely unfathomable given her personality. "Miranda is very smart, and she's very tenacious and very strong, but she's always been kind of a bull in a china shop, kind of rushing ahead, and then maybe having to go back and sweep up the china afterwards," Nixon explained. "I think some people are not loving seeing these characters maybe off-kilter, but I love that. … Whatever age you are, you haven't figured everything out. If you think you've figured everything out, you're kidding yourself."
