It’s only Tuesday, but it’s been a week. For starters, there’s everything about the ongoing Don’t Worry Darling drama. And now Jason Momoa, who is well-known and -loved for his long, luscious, and envy-inducing shoulder-length hair—so much so that he wore a French braid to the 2022 Academy Awards—shocked fans by shaving it all off into a buzzcut.
The Aquaman star took to Instagram to document the transformation, revealing that the big chop is actually for a good cause: The actor is cutting his hair to inspire others to cut single-use plastics from their lives.
“Aloha, everyone, so we’re shaving off the hair, and doing it for single-use plastics,” he begins, showing the camera his freshly cut braids as his hair continues to be buzzed. Momoa then stops for a moment, laughing that he’s “never felt the wind right there.” Clearly he’s new to the sensation.
“We gotta stop. Plastic forks, all that shit, it just goes into our land just goes into our ocean…. I’m just seeing some things in our ocean. It’s just so sad, so please, anything you can do to eliminate single-use plastics in your life. Help me, help me,” the Game of Thrones star continues. “Plastic bottles are ridiculous. Bring your canteen, or…now everyone’s making the aluminum, which is fantastic.”

Momoa’s caption echoed his environmental sentiment. “Here’s to new beginnings, let’s spread the aloha. Be better at protecting our land and oceans. We need to cut single use plastics out of our lives and out of our seas. Plastic bottles, plastic bags, packaging, utensils, all of it,” the actor wrote, tagging Mananalu Water, the aluminum-bottled-water company he founded as well.
Instagram users were quick to react to Momoa’s new look, commenting “NOOOOO,” and “Whaaaaat?!!!” while others applauded the actor for his statement-making transformation. But it seems we can all agree both styles work on Momoa. As one commentor put it, “I never thought I’d see the day 😳. Somehow he’s still smoking hot—the man’s got a gift.”
We’ll miss Momoa’s long hair, but we certainly don’t mind his new look—or saving the planet—either.
