If you are a parent to a pre-schooler, it will probably be the first time your kid will be going to school. It will be a big transition for your kid if they haven’t been to a play school or have done home-schooling till now, the pandemic being the reason. But now that your kid is ready to go/ to go back to school, there are a few skills that you as a parent should make your child aware of. These are simple life skills that you can practice with your little one at home and make sure that when they enter school, they’ll pick up life skills so much faster, and appreciate them!
Raise ‘Em Hands!
Teaching kids to raise a hand before speaking is a must to maintain a peaceful environment in class. You must teach your little one to raise their hand and then ask the teacher about something.
Practise this with your child at home. Show them how to raise their hand and wait before speaking.
Waiting For Their Turn
Waiting for their turn can be tough for kids, but they must understand how important this is. Kids need to learn to wait for many things, and for many reasons, like waiting for their turn at school to play with toys, go to the washroom, speak what they have in mind and more.
Sit with your child and explain to them how to wait for their turn to ask or speak about something. Take them to a park and explain how they should wait without getting irritated for their turn to play on a swing.
Meet & Greet
Your child will also meet many new people of their age, and teachers, once they start school. They should not act weirdly in such situations or turn their face when someone speaks to them.
Ask your little one to greet everyone at home after getting up in the morning and before going to bed at night. You can also take them to public places like parks, museums, and markets to make your kid open up to people around them.
Teamwork
Teamwork comes into play in everyday situations like playdates, school projects and more. Children are often asked to work in groups at school.
Involve your kids in daily chores at home to make them understand the importance of working together as a group.
Open The Tiffin Box
Practising school lunch at home for kids is one of the most crucial skills for school. While there is nothing wrong with taking the help of a teacher to open the tiffin box, the pride in doing something on your own will follow your child for many years to come.
At lunchtime at home, give one lunch box to your child and take another. Teach your child how to open it, and then watch your child to see how they can manage.
Using A Washroom
Kids are shy about informing and asking the teacher to go to the washroom. It’s not good for our body to hold nature’s call; thus, this is one of the essential life skills you should teach your child.
Practise this with your little one at home. Tell them to take your permission every time they need to use the washroom. You can deny them once or twice and simultaneously make them learn to ask again by saying, “it’s urgent.”
Cleaning Hands
We are sure we do not need to explain the importance of maintaining hygiene. A kid’s immune system is less mature than those of adults, so they’re more susceptible to germs. Washing hands before and after lunch, and after using the washroom, must be taught to kids.
When at home, ask your child to wash their hands with soap before and after meals and after using the washroom.
Developing basic life skills is important, and parents and teachers must work together to instil these skills in children. Let’s focus on educating our children in a way that they find fun and entertaining so we can be worry-free regarding their morals and skills!
