One of the many reasons Princess Diana will forever be cemented as a royal favorite is thanks to her reputation as a total fashion icon in the '80s and '90s. A princess of the people, she certainly knew how to appeal to the masses when it came to her 'fits—and has even inspired future generations to embrace a similar style. Considering the fact that social media, fashion blogs, and texting didn't exist yet, this influence was seriously impressive. Sure, she had royalty and fame on her side, but it doesn't detract from the fact that Diana wore sooo many epic looks in her lifetime.

Whether she was at a gala, doing charity work, or socializing at a sporting event, Princess Diana dressed to impress. She wore everything from custom ensembles (as a princess should) to designer labels like Versace and Dior—all with an '80s and '90s flare. Think: padded shoulders, frilly collars, matchy-matchy accessories, and plenty of polka dots. She was essentially one of the world's first fashion influencers!

Of course, it isn't just non-royals who have emulated the Princess' style through the years. Both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have often dressed like Diana—which is a sweet homage to their husbands' late mother as well as a serve. Though she's not with us today, Diana continues to inspire everyone from fashionistas to modern royalty with her timeless outfits. The next time you pair a sweatshirt with bike shorts or don a slinky black dress to show your ex what they're missing (ahem, her famous revenge dress), thank Princess Diana for laying the groundwork.

In honor of all her stunning ensembles (and for serious inspo), keep scrolling for 80 of the best Princess Diana outfits of all time.
