DescriptionCheckout this cool early drawing of a "Kabuki" universe character.David drew this when he was a 19 year old for a class art assignment. His teacher gave him an "A" for this (see 1st additional posted image of the back of this page). David shared insights with me via Facebook message. (see posted images) He said he wasn't sure if it was Kabuki specifically, but he did see her origin in the mask he drew on this page. You can see the similarities on this early concept art to the Kabuki character: *White mask with Red Dot, red lips, and curvy flowing markings *Ballerina-type pose with twirling spiral aspects *Short cropped hair *long forearm gloves *short tight costume Compare this art to the cover to Kabuki Dance of Death (2nd additional image posted) David also confirmed he drew this back in 1993...one year prior to Kabuki's 1st appearance in Fear the Reaper (1994). I was fortunate to meet David on several occasions when he came to Hawaii cons...and this art piece is a great connector between us. He is a great artist and a great guy. Social/Sharing |

Great piece for sure, nice to see the history. We've had great interactions with him at multiple cons. And got a fun piece where we see a bunch of his layouts that were used for his COVER series, for an ALITA piece he made. Mainly got it for the history seen on the back. Great seeing his early stuff and commentary. Congrats!

Sweet, I would have given him an A+ as well unless there was some higher grade available. Congrats.
