Name of comic: Disney’s Darkwing Duck #1

Comic publisher: Walt Disney Publications

Date: November 1991

Variants: A direct edition with an image of Donald Duck in the bottom corner, and a newsstand edition with a UPC code in the bottom corner were both published by Walt Disney Publication in 1991. Dynamite Entertainment published a facsimile edition in March 2023, along with four variants: a black-and-white incentive cover, a blank cover, a purple foil logo cover and a gold foil logo cover.

What makes it special? After debuting on television as part of the Disney Afternoon lineup on September 6, 1991, Darkwing Duck made his comic book first appearance only two months later in this limited series.

Why is it interesting now? After the 1991 limited series published by Walt Disney Publications, Darkwing Duck returned to comics in a new series published by BOOM! Studios in 2010. In 2016 it was picked up by Joe Books, and in 2018 IDW Publishing reprinted the stories originally published by BOOM! Studios. In March 2023, Dynamite Entertainment began publishing an all-new Darkwing Duck ongoing comic book series.

Did you know? Following the end of the cartoon series in 1992, Darkwing Duck returned to television in 2017’s animated DuckTales reboot on the Disney Channel and later made a cameo in the 2022 live-action/animation hybrid Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers film. That sparked rumors of a new Darkwing Duck animated series, or possibly a film, with Seth Rogan attached.

Sales highlights: A CGC 9.8 copy was sold on eBay for $725.
