Artist Research- Duane Michals

Duane Michals is and american photographer who combines text and image to create photo sequences that often portray thoughts and emotions.

I like this image because of its dual perspective. From one angle you can see a model looking into a mirror and from a different angle you can see her distorted reflection. This mirror distorts reflections depending on how you look at it.

The use of highlights and shadows within the photo help add depth. The contrast between the black model and bright reflection also depicts the battle between how she perceives herself in comparison to what she is actually like. It appears as though natural lighting has been used in this photograph as the light coming in from the right side looks like sunlight. The text underneath the image says that the girl never knows which reflection of herself she will see, because these are handwritten words it gives the image a more personal and informal look. The landscape orientation of the photograph also means there is lots of negative space surrounding the model, this helps draw the viewers attention to the main subject.
