Genshin Impact players buckling under the storage size of the 4.0 Fontaine update

Genshin Impact Fontaine 4.0 update storage issues

Genshin Impact is one of the most popular mobile titles out there. However, with the new Update 4.0 adding Fontaine to the Genshin Impact map, players have been reporting storage issues. During the game’s nearly three-year stint, some amount of bloat is to be expected. Especially when we consider that Genshin Impact can be enjoyed by players from all sorts of platforms, from mobile to PlayStation and PC. Let’s see what could be the cause of the issue and if there are any solutions to solving it.

Genshin Impact players facing storage issues after the Fontaine update

Genshin Impact was never a “small” game to begin with. With the scope it had right from the start, it was no wonder that it could be taxing on your mobile storage. But update after update only expanded on what was already there.

If you haven’t refreshed your install files in a while, the full game can take up as much space as a AAA game by itself. In fact, the Fontaine update seems to have a variable update size, ranging between 24 and 32 GB alone! It’s no wonder that the players are having issues with it, especially mobile players whose storage space is usually much more limited.

However, not even PC players could get away from the problem. One player has reported on Reddit that the Fontaine update needed over 136 GB to unpack on the PC launcher. This doesn’t even include the separate voice file packs that add around 9-10 GB to the count.

This certainly owes a lot to the increasing size of recent regions of Teyvat. Sumeru alone was as big as Mondstadt and Liyue put together. Fontaine looks to be going the same route, with the game’s scope ever expanding. This means more quests, characters and interactions, which is great, but that also means there are many more files to download too.

Is there a solution to fix this issue?

Fortunately, there seem to be a few ways to reduce the bloat of Genshin Impact installation files. Many players report that opting out from the update and doing a full reinstall of the game is the way to go. This will install only the relevant files while removing the many obsolete ones. These obsolete files seem to be the ones that have caused the game to bloat in the first place.

For mobile users on the other hand, Genshin Impact YouTuber Souvik_Dutta has posted a detailed solution in a Reddit thread. This solution is a step-by-step guide to fixing the Fontaine update storage issues. It’s less invasive than simply deleting the game and redownloading it from scratch. However, there are several steps that you’ll need to take to do it. Ultimately, it is up to you which solution is the best to fix the issue.

Hopefully, MiHoYo will take notice after the latest and fully justified fan outrage and start doing a better job at optimizing the update process. This would have to include the removal of unnecessary files as well. This counts doubly so for mobile users, as many of them outright can’t even begin updating the game when there’s no extra space on their devices.
