Kaya Scodelario has said that she's well used to being the only woman on set and has 'learned to deal' with it over her career.

The actress's latest project for Netflix sees her appearing alongside Ray Winstone in The Gentlemen and playing crime boss Susie Glass.

Talking about calling herself the 'token girl' in the past, Kaya told Geek Ireland: 'I mean, it's not a conscious decision, I definitely would rather not be the token female. I think it'd be great if a lot more media represented the world in which, you know, we're actually the higher percentage of the population, but kind of how it is just how it's been for a long time.

'I try and see myself as an actor and a character. And when I get on set, I hope that everyone respects me as a colleague, not as, you know, the woman or the girl, and I treat everyone as a colleague. I think that's kind of the most you can ask for.'

Kaya continued to chat a little about the roles she decides to take, saying: 'It's all down to the characters. That's what matters. If the character is good, the character is good. If the other words are on the page.

'If the story's interesting, that's what interests me. It just so happens that more often than not, I happen to be the only woman there. But I've learned to deal with it.'

The Gentlemen, which also stars Theo James and Vinnie Jones, follows the story of aristocratic Eddie (Theo) who inherits the family estate only to discover that it's home to an enormous weed empire - and its proprietors aren't going anywhere.

Kaya's character Susie is the daughter of Bobby Glass (who is played by Ray) and is said to be ruthless in the way she runs the family business.

If the storyline sounds familiar then that might be because the world was previously brought to life by Guy Richie in movie format in 2020, although Netflix assures viewers that the characters are different in the TV show.
