British actress Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner films, Skins) has been tapped for the lead role in Netflix‘s drama series Spinning Out in a recasting. She replaces Emma Roberts, who was originally cast but exited shortly thereafter.
Spinning Out is set in the world of competitive figure skating. Created by Samantha Stratton (Mr. Mercedes), a former competitive figure skater herself, the series centers on Kat Baker (Scodelario), an up-and-coming, high-level single skater who’s about to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. When Kat seizes an opportunity to continue her career as a pair skater with a talented bad-boy partner, she risks exposing a fiercely kept secret that could unravel her entire life. On and off the ice, Kat and her new partner will face daunting odds, injury to body and soul, financial sacrifice, and even potential mental breakdown on their way to realizing their Olympic dream.
Stratton and Lara Olsen executive produce and serve as co-showrunners on the series. Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold executive produce via Safehouse Pictures. The company’s Matt Schwartz serves as co-executive producer.
Scodelario is best known in the U.S. for her role in The Maze Runner film series, first in the 2013 film, the 2015 sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and most recently reprised her role as Teresa alongside Dylan O’Brien in the third and final installment Maze Runner: The Death Cure. She got her break as a teen on the cult British series Skins where she played Effy Stonem. Recently, Scodelario filmed Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile alongside Zac Efron about the life of notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, which will premiere at Sundance in 2019. She also stars in Paramount environmental horror film, Crawl, set to premiere in 2019. Scodelario is repped by CAA, Curtis Brown, and Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal Laviolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman.
