Are you looking to add both shade and color to your landscaping? If so, then a jacaranda tree may be a great option for you. Continue reading to learn about this beautiful tree species and how to care for it as part of your Tucson landscaping.
Origin
The jacaranda tree is native to the south-central region of South America. It is vulnerable to frost, especially when it is young, but can be cultivated in areas around the world where the temperature typically stays above freezing.
Appearance
Striking indigo flowers cover mature jacaranda trees in the spring and early summer. These blooms feature a trumpet-like shape. The tree has large, fern-like leaves with a bright green color. Jacaranda trees can grow to be 50 to 60 feet tall, with a wide canopy that offers plenty of shade.
Care
If you are interested in adding a jacaranda tree to your landscaping, one of the first things to consider is frost protection. While mature trees can withstand short periods of below-freezing temperatures, young trees should be covered whenever there is a danger of frost. These trees do well with full sun exposure, though they can tolerate some shade. Jacaranda trees require water during all seasons, and may need frequent irrigation in the summer. Check the soil at the base of the tree, and water deeply whenever the top three inches of soil have dried out.
