UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEErcE.
EDWIN A. REITZ, OF REYNOLDSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
AD JU S TAB LE WIN DOW-SCREE N.
T o all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. RErTz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reynoldsville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Penns lvania, have invented certain new and usetui7 Improvements in Adjustable Window-Screens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable window screens.
The object of the invention is to provide an improvedA window screen formed in adjustably connected sections, whereby the screen may be fitted to different size windows, means being provided to secure said sections in their adjusted positions.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of one side of a screen constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view looking toward the reverse side of the screen to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical crosssectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through a portion of the screen, and the adjacent side of the window frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a screen which consists of a frame formed in sections 2 and 3. The section 2 comprises a side bar 4 at the upper and lower ends of which are secured laterally projecting right-angularly disposed upper and lower recess cross-pieces, 5. On the inner edges of the recessed portion of the crosspieces, 5, are formed longitudinally disposed grooves, 6, and at the inner ends of said crosspieces, adjacent to the side bar, 4, are arranged sheet rnetal sleeves or sockets, 7, the purposeljof which will be hereinafter described.
The section 3, comprises a side bar, 8 to which is connected upper and lower recessed cross-pieces, 9, which are disposed at rightangles to the bar, 8, and are arranged a slight distance in from the ends of the bar, as shown. On the outer edges of the recessed portion of the cross-pieces, 9, are formed Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 393,673. l
longitudinally disposed tongues, 10, which are adapted to slidably engage the groove, 6, in the cross-pieces, 5, when the sections of the screen are iitted together. On the outer sides of the cross-pieces, 9, adjacent to their engagement with the side bar, 8, are secured sheet metal sleeves or sockets, 12. When the sections of the screen. are engaged with each other, the outer ends ofthe cross-pieces, 5, will slidably engage the sockets, 12, on the cross-pieces, 9, while the inner ends of said cross-pieces, 9, will slidably engage the sockets, 7, on the cross-pieces, 5, thus securely holding said cross-pieces in slidable engagementwitheach other and permitting the frame to be adjusted to various sizes.
Formed in the inner sides of the sockets, 7,
are longitudinally disposed slots, 13, through ,v
which are arranged set-screws, 14, which are adapted to be screwed into the inner ends of the cross-pieces, 9, thereby providing means for securing the sections of the screen in their adjusted positions.
Between the cross-pieces, 5 and 9, of each of the frame sections, and covering the outer portions of the latter are wire netting screens, 15, the upper and lower, and outer side edges of which are securely fastened to the crosspieces, and side bars of the frame in any suitable manner, while to the inner edges of the screens are fastened metallic binding strips, 16, which cover and protect the raw edges of the screens, and which, when the sections of the frame are brought together, will iit against the opposite screen sections, and effectively close the space between the same, and thereby prevent the entrance of insects between the sections of the screen.
In the outer edges of the side bars, 4 and 8, are Jformed longitudinally dis osed grooves, 17, and in said ed es at suitab e intervals are secured metallic ates, 18, which are bent to form substantial y U-shaped grooves or channels, 19, which correspond in size and lie in alinement with the grooves formed in the side bars of the frame sections. The grooves, 17 and 19, are adapted to slidably engage suitable guide stri s which are secured to the adjacent sides of tlie window frame.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a window screen, a frame formed in sections, one of which is provided with longitudinal grooves, tongues formed on the opposing sections to engage said grooves, sleeves arranged on each of said-sections to receive the ends of the opposite sections, the sleeves of one of said sections having formed therein longitudinal slots, set screws in the ends of the opposite section to engage said slotted sleeves and thereby secure said sections together in adjustable engagement, and means arranged on the outer edges of said sections to Jforrn guide grooves', substantially as described.
2. In a window screen a frarne formed .ill sections one of which is provided with longitudinal grooves, tongues formed on the op posing sections to engage said grooves, sleeves arranged on each of said sections to receive the ends of the opposite section7 the sleeves on one of said sections having formed therein longitudinal slots, set screws in the ends of the opposite section to `engage said slotted sleeves and thereby secure said sections together in adjustable engagement, strips arranged onthe outer edges of said sections to 'form guide grooves and channeled plates arranged on said edges t0 form part of oanc the guide groove thereon, substantially as ,and thereby secure said sections in adjustable engagement, strips arranged on the outer side edges of said sections to forni guide grooves, channeled plates arranged on said edges to form part of said grooves, overlapping screen sections arranged on said frame sections ,and binding strips on the inner `edges of said screen sections, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set rny hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. l
