BLAST CONNECTION FDR FURNACES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1907.
Application filed February 18,1907. Serial No. 858,027.
To all 11 1101): it may comm/'11:
Be it known that 1, lines D15 li'll'lltli. residing at You lOlYll, in the county ot Mahoniug and State of Ohio, a citizen ol the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and usehd improvements in lllast tonnections tor l*uruac ,1s, ot' which iniprowzments the [ollowiug 1 specification.
1.11 the operation ot blast l'urnaec plants, it, is necessary to arrange the blowing engines at a considerable distance from the furnace proper, 1Tt1\\'11l('ll the engines are connect ed by large pipes, usually supported on the Walls ol buildings or on specially constructed trestles. The blowing engines are 111' the reciprocating type so that the air is caused to move through the connecting pipes irregularly, having a pulsating movement rather than a steady continuous (low. This pulsatingmovement causes such a vibration to the pipes or connecting tubes as to render it exceedingly ditlicult to hold the 511 me in position, and irequentlythe vibration imparted to the tithes is such as to throw down the supporting Walls or trestles.
The present in vention has tor its object a construction whereby the thrust exerted by the air being led to the lurirtccs is taken up by a solid wall or abutment, and an enlarged chamber is provided, whereby a more steady and continuous llo1v oi air to the iurnace is obtained. The invention is hereiuat'ter more l'ullv described and claimed.
in the accoiiitniii ii11g drawings .l'orming a part of this specification, Figure 'l view partly in section and partly in elevation showing portions of the connecting pipes extending l'1'on1thobloivingengine oi the l'urnaee, and having my iinpiovcment applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a sectional 1,.1lau .'ie1voua line indicated hytheline ll ll. Fig. l.
111 the pi'act ice of my invention, 1. provide at any suitable point along the line o1 pipe designed to connect the blowing engine with the blast lnrnace, a vertical. chamher 1, ol dimensions tonsiderably larger than the pipe 2 connecting the chamber with the blowing engine or the pipe 3 connecting the chamber with the blast furnace. This chamber can be l'ormed in any suitable manner, but preferably 111' metal plates riveted together and arranged upon a base or .touudation t. The pipe 2, extending lrom the engine enters the vertical chamber at a suitable point above its lotver end, and the portion vcithin the chamber is turned at an angle so that it Will discharge the air in a direction parallel or approximately parallel with the axis of the chamber. While not necessary, it; is prelerred that the vertical. portion 2 ol the pipe 2 should be arranged adjacent. to a portion oi the wall 01 the vertical chamber or in other words with the oi the chamber. Adjacent the bottom of the chamber, it; is prel'erred to arrange ametal plate, preferably having a concave upper surl'ace and riveted to the shell of the chamber 1. The pipe 3 leading to the iurnace is connected to the chamber, preferably at a point above the point 01' entrance ol the supply pipe 2. In the construct ion shown, the shell l'ormi n the chamber 1 is supported laterally by angular braces or knees 6 bolted to the foundation.
in use, the air rushing in through the pipe 2 2 will be directed down upon the plate which will transmit shocl-(s or bl oivs imparted by the air, to the foundation through the shell (11' the chamber 1. By reason of the concavity ot the plate the air, after impact, Will be deilectetl, and caused to flow up through the chamber, along the side opposite that against which the Vertical portion 2 oi the engine pipe is arranged. 13y reason oi the greater size oi the chamber 1 the air will flow steadily or with very slight pulsation .t'rom the chamber to the blast furnace.
in addition to providing a firm abutment lor receiving the impact ol the air, my improvement contemplates changiug the direction 01' (low 01' the air, so that the thrns' in one direction due to lriction oi the air on the Walls, will be neutralized in part at least by the opposite ilow.
1 claim herein as my invention:
1. A blast furnace plant: having in combination a line o1" pipe for conducting air under pressure from the blowing engine to the t'urnace. and a wall or abutment arranged transversely otf 1he line of [low and adapted to receive the impact; oi the stream ot' air without interrupting its 110w.
2. 1n :1 blast: l'urnace plant the combination of a chamber provided with an inlet and having :1 firmly supported port ion or shock absorbing abutment, a connection from the blowing engine adapted to direct air under pressure against the solidly supported portion and an outlet to the t'uruaee extending from the chamber at: :in angle to the inlet.
1. in a blast. t'urnace plant the combination 01' a chamher, a pipe extending from the blowing engine connected to the chamber, means within the chamber for changing the direction 01' the how 01 air, and 1111 outlet, connected with the blast t'uruace.
-l., in a blast furnace plant. the combination of a vertically arranged chamber having a solidly supported abutment for absorbing the impact, of the air, a pipe extending from the blowing engine to the chamber and having the portion within the chamber arranged to direct the intlowiug air against said abutment and 1111 outlet connected to the blast l'urnace.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES W. DEETRICK.
