UNITED STATES Patented August 25, 1903,
I PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S: GRANNIS, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO NEW PROCESS RAVVHIDE COMPANY, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A COR- PORATION on NEW :YORK.
RAWHIDE PINION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,223, dated August 25, 1903. Application filed December is 1902. Serial No. 135,693. (No model) Z0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. GRANNIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rawhide Pinions, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of wheels, especially pinions, which havetheir body or main portion formed of rawhide or othersuitable non-metallic material and confined between metallic heads or collars rigidly secured to the ends of said body. In the manufacture of said class of wheels or pinions it has been the practice to fasten the metallic heads or collars to the non-metallic body by means of bolts or rivets passing through the heads or collars and intermediate body. It has been found that such construction caused considerable weakening of the heads or collars, especially when of small diameter, by the perforations thereof required for the reception of the aforesaid bolts or rivets.
The object of this invention is to obviate said defect and also reduce the cost of manufacture of the wheel or pinion; and to that end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the component parts hereinafter described and as illustrated in the annexed drawings,'in which- Figure 1 is an end view of a pinion constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line X X in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached side view of Fig. 4 is an end view of the hub. Fig. 5 is a face view of the collar which is formed separate from the hub, and Fig. 6 is a transverse section on line Y Y in Fig. 5.
The pinion shown in said drawings is of the species which is designed to be mounted a represents the tubular hub of said pinion, which hub is formed of metal and is provided intermediate its ends with a rigid collar 1), preferably formed integral with the hub.
0 denotes the rawhide or other non-metallic body which is mounted on the hub and abuts against the side of the collar 1).
1 denotes the collar which is mounted on the end of the hub and abuts against the adjacent end of the body 0. This collar dis fastened to the hub independently of the wheelbody 0 by means of clenchers e, formed on the end of the hub and sunken into indentations f; formed in the outer face of the collar adjacent to the hub. The said indentations may be of any suitable shape to afford a secure hold to the aforesaid clenchers, which are formed by upsetting outward the end of the hub after the collar 01 is placed in its requisite position contiguous to'the rawhide body.
The outer face of the collar d is subsequently planed'or suitably finished to present'a smooth face, as represented in. Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
To look the rawhide or non-metallic body from turning upon the hub a, 1 form the exterior of said hub with parallel longitudinal.
ribs hh extending from'the collar 1) to the end of the hub and shaped'to present longitudinal cutting edges 11, extending from end to erid of the ribs. In pressing the rawhide body 0 onto the hub the aforseaid ribs cut their way in the bore of said body and form therein grooves, which interlock with the ribs,',and thus prevent the rawhide or non-' metallic body from slipping circu mferentially on the hub. The collar d is formed with grooves or notches Z l coinciding with the ribs h h, which pass through said grooves or notches, and thuslikewi'se lock said collar circumferentially on the hub.
In the manufacture of the species of pinion shown in the annexed drawings the collars b and cl are of the same diameter as the body 0. The teeth of the pinion are cut through said collars and intermediate body after the said parts are firmly uni'ted'in the manner hereinbefore described.
I wish it to be understood that I do not limit my invention to its application to a body composed'of rawhide, as said body may be com-' posed of some other suitable non-metallic material.
What I claim as m y invention is-- 1. A Wheel composed of a metallic hub formed with clenchers, a non-metallic body mounted on said hub, a collar fixed to the hub and abutting againstone side of said body, and a collar mounted on the hub and fastened thereto by engagement with the aforesaid clenchers.
2. A Wheel composed of a metallic hub formed with clenchers and with a collar, a non-metallic body mounted on the hub and abutting against said collar, and a collar abutting against the opposite end of the said body and formed in its outer face with indentations having sunken therein the afore said clenchers.
3. A wheel composed of a metallic hub formed with a collar and with longitudinal ribs at one side of said collar, a non-metallic body abutting against said side of the collar and locked from turning by engagement with the aforesaid ribs, and a collar mounted on the hub adjacent to the opposite end of said body and fastened directly to the hub independently of the aforesaid wheel-body as set forth.
4. A wheel. composed of a metallic hub with clenchers and formed with a collar and parallel longitudinal ribs extending from said collar to one end of the hub, a non-metallic body abutting against said collar and locked from turning on the hub by engagement of the ribs with the bore of said body, a collar mounted on the end of the hub and bearing on the-Wheel-body and formed with grooves interlocked with the aforesaid ribs, and with indentations in its outer face adjacent to the hub and having the aforesaid clenchers countersunk in said indentations, as set forth and shown.
5. A wheel composed of a metallic hub with clenchers and formed with a collar and parallel longitudinal ribs having cutting edges extending lengthwise of the ribs, a rawhide body abutting against said collar and having the aforesaid ribs sunken in the surface of the bore of said body, a collar mounted on the end of the hub adjacent to the rawhide body and formed with grooves interlocked with the ribs of the hub and provided in its outer face With indentations adjacentto the hub and having the aforesaid clenchers countersunk in said indentations, as set forth.
