TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
-Be it known that VI, D.' HZZARD, 'of Milton, in. the county of Sussex, and' State of Delaware, have invented new and improved Platform-Scalest-and I doV hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionv thereof, which will enable `those skilled in -the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciicaton.
This invention relates to anew and improved inethod of constructing scales of the platform kind; and itL consists in attaching a spiral Spring to a spindle, to the top end of which spindle the platform is secured, and to the bottom end of which an indicating-rod and finger is attached, so that when an article to he weighed is placed on the platform, the weight of the article will act upon the spring, and be indicated by the finger, as will he hereinafter described. l Y
Figure 1 represents a` vertical section ci'. the scale, through the line :z: ai of 5g. 2.
Figure2 is a horizontal section, through'the line y y of iig. 1. I
Figure 3 is a view ofthe top of the stand. I

A is a hollow stand, which is secured to a bed-plate marked B; C is the spindle, -D is the spiral spring, E is the platform. F represents a plate, which is secured to the stand to which the spring is attached, and through which the spindle C passes. The spindleis kept steady and in place by four. frictionrolls b b b b, secured in the top ot" the-stand, as'seen in the drawing. G isan elastic rod, which is attached to the bottom end of the spindle, the lower end of whichzelastic rod is curved, and passes through the side of the stand, and forms a pointer or indicating-iinger, h,`on the plate H, a'top view of which plate is seen in iig. 2.V J is a tubular cavity within the standA, which contains the spring, and K is a cavity of larger diameter, into which the spindle and lower end of the spring extend in the process of weighing. Thislatter tubular cavity is seen in section in iig. 2. The lower end of thespindle is attached to a plate, L, on which plate are secured, on pivots or arbors, frictionrolls e e e e', which serve to keep' the spindle in a central position as'it is depressed in weighing.
. As the spring and rod are pressed down in the process of weighing, the elastic rod G, with the indicator 71, will slide in the slot in the plate H, indicating thereby the weight of the article on the platform, the plate H being properly graduated and figured for the purpose, as seen in the drawing. The elastic rod G is guided or kept in place by harsc c c,'wl1ich pass through the cavity K in the stand. The operation is so plainly shown in the drawing that further description is deemed unnecessary.
i Having thus described my invention, I claim-as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hollow stand A, the spindle C, the springs D, the elastic rod G, and the graduated plate H, in combinationand arranged substantially as shown and described, for the purposes set forth.
' i D. HAZZARD.
