UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRICK WILLIAM COCHRANE, OF VYANDOTTE, KANSAS.
ICE-CREAM FREEZER.-
SPECIFICATION formng part of Letters Patent No. 436,337, dated September 16, 1890.
Application filed August 20, 1888. Serial No. 283,235. (No model.) y
siding at Wyandotte, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ice-Cream Freezers, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in ice-cream freezers; and it consists in certain novel features 'hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of an ice-cream freezer provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the cans removed from the freezer. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of one of the cans. Fig. 5 is a detailed perspectiveview of a cover.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the body of my freezer, which is preferably cylindrical, but may be of any other desired configuration. The body is provided at diametrically -opposite points with the handles B, by means of which it may be moved from place to place. The bodyis also provided near its upper edge with an interior annular flange C, on which the can-holder D is supported. The body is further provided in its side near its upper edge with an opening E, through which the ice or freezing material may be fed to the interior of the body, and this opening is covered by a spout F, as shown.
The can-holder I) is acircular plate of any suitable material provided with a number of openings I, arranged in various positions, so as to accommodate a large number of cans, and thereby provide for freezing a large quantity of cream at one time and also facilitate the simultaneous manufacture of different ilavors. The holder is provided at diametrically-opposite points with handles G, by means of which it may be oscillated.
The cans J are preferably rectangular in shape, although they may be of any desired form and of any suitable dimensions. They are provided at their upper ends with the outwardly-projecting shoulders or flanges K,
which rest upon the can-holder, and thereby support the can within the body of the freezer. Y
L designates the extractonwhich is designed for the purpose of withdrawing the cream from the can after it has been frozen. This extractor is an open frame of proper dimensions to lit snugly within the cans when its lower end rests on the bottom of the can, as clearly shown. than the can, so that its upper end will project slightly above the same, and thereby form a handle M, the upper cross-bar being separated from the sides and secured to the ends of the same.
N designatesl a cover loosely mounted on the sides of the extractor'. The cover consists of a metallic plate having transverse slots O near its ends. The plate is slipped down on the sides of the extractor and rests on the upper end of the can, as shown.
In operation the cans are inserted through the openings in the can-holders and are supported thereby, and the holder is then placed in the body. The cream, together with sugar, eggs, and other ingredients, is placed in the cans. The ice or freezing-mixtureis then placed in the body through the side opening in the same, and the holder is then oscillated by means of the handles, so as to cause the said freezing-mixture to pass between and around the cans. The cans are thereby reduced in temperature and the contents of the same frozen. After the cream has been frozen sufficiently, the extractor is Withdrawn, thereby removing` the cream in a solid block, in which condition it is ready for use.
It will be observed from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that I have provided an extremely simple freezer, by means of which ice-cream and Water-ices can. be manufactured very quickly. By using a large number of cans a great variety of flavors and alarge quantity of cream can be made as easily and quickly as a rather small quantity by the devices heretofore provided. The openings in the can-holder may be arranged in any desired manner, so as to provide for the use of a large number of cans, which will be arranged Within the body so as to provide Itis made somewhat longer ICO spaces between them through which the freezing-mixture can circula te. The freezing'- mixture can be easily replenished through the feed-opening in the side of the body, and if so desired the spout covering said opening may be filled With the mixture, which will pass through said opening into the body as needed.
v Having thus described my invention, vvhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In an ice-cream freezer, the body A, com
bined with the rotating can-holder D, oonsisting of a plain board supported Within the body and having the handles G and the plurality of cans J inserted through openings in the can-holder and depending within the body and suspended from the can-holder, and the extractors L, fitted in the cans and consisting of an open frame neatly fitting the sides of the cans and adapted to hold the cream Within the can and having at the top the handles M, and the cover N, loosely fitting the handles and resting on top of the cans, as set forth.
2. The herein-described extractor L, consisting of an open frame of the same dimensions and shape as the can Within which it is inserted, and adapted to neatly tit the interior of the can, so as to hold the cream, and prosions and shape as the can Within which itis inserted, and adapted to neatly it the interior of the can, so asto hold the cream, and
provided with the handles M at the top, and
the loosely-iitting plate N, provided With slots at its ends to receive the side bars of the extractor-frame, and forming a cover for the can, as set forth.
4. kIn anice-cream freezer, the bodyA, combined Withtthe rotating can-holderD, consisting of a plain board which covers the top of the body and is supported within the same, and provided with operating means, and the series of cans J, having flanges K at the top and inserted through openings of the canholder and depending Wi thin the body, whereby all the cans are suspended from the cauholder, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
