DAVID VEITCH, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
ATTACHMENT FOR BANJOS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,535, dated August 19, 1890. Application filed October 28, 1889. Serial No. 328,378- (No model.) Patented in England May4,1889, No.'7,505.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID VEITOH, of 236 Battersea Park Road, London, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Preventing Injury to Clothes while Playing the Banjo, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 7,505, dated May 4., 1889,) whichimprovements are fullyset forth in the accompanying specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a means for covering the ends of the nuts on the tension-bolts used for tightening the skin of the banjo, so as to prevent them from rubbing against the clothes of a person playing the instrument. For this purpose I construct a shield of metal or other suitable material, provided with screws or other suitable means for fixing it upon the said nuts, the whole as shown upon the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the shield; Fig; 2, a section on the line a: 00, and Fig. 3 a plan. Fig. at is a section of the banjo, showing the shield fixed in its place; and Fig. 5 is also a section of the banjo, showing an alternative method of fixing the shield.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through- I out the several views.
a is the curved shield.
b is a piece of metal, which along with the screws 0 enables the shield to be fixed upon the nuts of the banjo. The holes for the screws are clear in the part a and tapped in the part b.
In Figs. l and 5, d are the tension-bolts; e, the nuts which are to be protected; f, the skin or head; g, the recess-band; h, the wood lining; j, the metal rim, and k the bracket. In Fig. 5 is shown an alternative plan, where the shield at consists of one piece only, fixed to the inside of the wood lining h by the screws 1, as shown.
One or more of such shields may be used upon a banjo, or the whole of the nuts may be covered by a shield.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A removable attachment for a banjo, consisting of the curved segment a, bent over to form a channel and adapted to cover the tension-nuts when secured to the banjo, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A removable attachment for abanjo, consisting of the curved segment a, bent over to form a channel and adapted to cover the tension-nuts, the curved plate b, inside said channel, and the thumb-screws a, passing through one side of the segment and engaging with said plate, whereby the attachment may be clamped to the tension-nuts, substantially as 60 and for the purpose set forth.
DAVID VEITOH.
