Description

J. DWYER.`
LINING FOR PIRE PLAGES.
(M0de1.)'
WMM/m w fr UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DwYEn, E EUsToN, AssIGNoE oE ONE-HALE To J. w. HOLBEET, oF HoMER, LonisIANA.
LlNlNG FOR FIRE-PLACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,057. dated March 6, 1888.
Application tiled August 2, 1887. Serial No. 245,954. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that l, JOHN DwYEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ruston, in the parish of Lincoln and State of Louisiana,
havel invented a new and useful Improvement in Linings for Fire-Places, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved lining for replaces; and it consists in certain .novelfea lo tures, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure lis a view of a fire-.place provided with my improved lining. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one of x5 the jambs removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the manner of fastening the foot.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A A A designate the back and sides of a fireplace formed of brick or other material 'in the usual 2o manner, as will be readily understood. In the lower portion of the back and sides I set in the tireback B and jambs C O, as shown, the jambs being approximately triangular in outline, their highest corners `being rset toward the back of the tire-place, whereby they corre spond to the outline of the logs placed on the hearth or andirons to burn. The tire-back and the jambs are provided with vertical grooves D, which terminate uniformly at a shortdis- 3o tance from the upper and lower edges of the fireback and jambs, and the end grooves or" the series are arranged at a similar distance from the side edges of the same, thereby forming the continuons band or rim E. The strength of the jambs and tire-back is thus increased,
while at the same time their weight is diminished. In the lower edges of the jambs and re-back, near the corners, I form the notches F, the upper walls of which are inclined down 4o wardly toward the front, as shown. Vertically above these notches F, I provide the transverse passages or perforations G.
' H designates the removable feet, which are substantially triangular in outline, and are provided at the ripper corners on their rear ,edges with the rearwardlyfprojecting teats I, which engage the perforations G. At their lower rear corners the feet are provided with the lugs J, which conform to and engage with 5o the notches F.
The front corners of the feet are provided with the downwardly projecting spurs K, which are made to enter the hearth or bottom of the fireplace, as will be readily understood.
In applying the feetto the back and jambs I first cause the lugs J to engage the notches F, and then swing the feet around, so that the teats I engage the perforations G.
From the foregoing description, taken in y connection with the accompanying drawings, 6o it is thought the purposes and advantages of my device will be readily understood. The logs are held from contact with the brick-work of the tire-place, and as metal is a good heat radiator the heat will be thoroughly diffused from the fire-place throughout the room. The jambs also prevent the ends of the logs punching holes in the side walls of the fireplace.
The several partsmay be set in the wall or simply placed against the same, as will be 7o readily understood, the feet serving to prevent their tipping forward and falling over. As the feet are detachable, -they can be readily removed, so as to facilitate packing for storage and transportation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the lire-back or jambs provided with notches in their lower 8o edges and transverse perforations vertically above said notches, of the removable triangular feet having lugs at their lower rear corners engaging the notches and teats at their upper Acorners engaging said perfor-ations, substan- JOHN DWYER.
