.To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL JonNsON BJ nair- NEss, of Arkdale, in the county of Adams and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Repeating Fire-Arm, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved repeating {ire-arm, which is loaded automatically aud throws the firingpin back to its place by the backaction of the charge, and also discharges the cartridge-shell automatically.
The invention consists cfa cylinder sliding in the breech-block, of a firing-pin sliding in the cylinder and in a bushing on the breechblock, and of a device for automatically loading and discharging the cartridgeshell.
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of thc same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed ont in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line a: x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a. side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 isa vertical transverse section of the breech-block` through the recesses E E?, showing the manner of ejeeting the cartridge.
The barrel A is provided with the bore B, which terminates at its rear end in' the annular recess B', into which lits the straight cartridge V, so as to prevent the latter from entering the borevB when hit by the firing-pin C, which is provided on its front end with a collar, C, sliding in a cylinder, D, fitted to slide in a recess, E', of the breech-block E, screwed upon the rear end of the barrel A and fastened with the same into the stock F. The rear end of the firing-pin C is guided in the bushing H, screwed into the breech-block E, and is provided with a shoulder, C', which en gages with the upper end of the lever l, operated by the trigger J and a spring, K, in the usual manner.
A spring, L, is placed between the stationary bushing H and the head Dof the cylinder D, and another spring, M, is coiled on the firingsoam. (Nn mmm.)

The closed end D'l of the cylinder D rests against the cartridge V, and is' provided with 4a central apertu re, through which passes the pointed end of the tiringpin when striking the cartridge.
The stock F has an inclined tube, N, in which slide the cartridges V, one above the other, being pressed upward by a spring, O, acting against a cap, P, having a knob, Q. which projects through a recess, N', in the side of the tube N. The upper end of the inclined tube N terminates in a recess, E", formed on the under side of the breech block E, in which recess E2 the cartridge is held before being placed in the annular recess B of the barrel A by the action of the springs R, which press the cartridge upward against the underside of the cylinder D. In the side of -the breech-block E is formed a recess, E, which communicates with the recess E', and is covered by a slide, S, provided with a knob, T, having an angular arm, T', which engages with a spring, U, having a bent part, U', by which the slide Scan be held in an open position, the bend U of the spring U engaging the recess U formed in the side of the breech-block E.
The operation is as follows: As shown in Fig.' 1, the fire-arm is in the position to be tired, which is done by prsing on the trigger J, which acts on the lever I, which releases the firing-pin C. The latter is thrown forward by the action of the spring M, its front end sliding in the cylinder D, and the point of the tiring-pin passingthrough the central aperture in the end Dlz of the cylinder D and exploding the cartridge, which is held in place by the cylinder D and prevented from moving into the bore B by being fitted into the annular recess B. When the cartridge explodes, the empty shell will be forced rearward, and with it the cylinder D, and assoon as the shell is in register with the side opening, E3, the
springs R R will force the cartridge 1 (see Fig.
4) upward, and said cartridge will force the empty shell v2 out through the opening E3. As soon as the cartridge 1 is in alignment with the cylinderD said cartridge will be forced engage the angle-arm T andy force the .slide over the opening E.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure b'y Letters Patent-.- r
1. In a repeating fire-arm. the combination of abarrel and abreech-block with a cylinder slidinginthe breech-block, and a spring placed between the cylinder and a bushing of the breech-block, substantially as shown' and dean opening, E, leading sidewise therefrom, and

In a repeating fire-arm, the combination of a breech-block and a cylinder sliding in the said breech-block with a firing-piu sliding` in a bushing ofthe breech-block and the cylinder, and a spring placed between the bushing and a Acollar o n the firing-pin, substantially as shown and described. 3. In a repeating fire-arm, the combination of a barrel and abreech-block with a cylinder, sliding in the said breech-block, a firing-pin sliding in a bushing of the breech-block and y in the said cylinder, and springs loperating the said cylinder and the firing-pin, respectively, substantially as shown and described.
4. In arepeati ng fire-arm, the barrel A,hav ing the bore B and the" annular recess B', and the breech-block E, provided with the bushing H, in combination with the cylinder D, sliding in the breech-block, the riug-piu C, having a collar and a shoulder which engages with a lever operated by the trigger, and the springs L and M, 'operating on the cylinder D and the firing-pin C, substantially as shown and described.

6. The breech-block E, having a recess, E', and aside opening, E, leading therefrom, and the cylinder D, sliding in said recess and having -the head Don its'inner end, and the slide S, adapted to close the opening E', and pro vided with a knob, T, on its cuter face, having an angle-arm, T', in the forward path of the head D', substantially as set forth.
7. The breech-block E, having the recess E.

8. In a repeating fire-arm, the breech-block E and the cylinder D, sliding in the breechblock E and operated by the springL, in com-4 bination with the springs R, supporting the cartridges from below at their front and rear ends, substantiallyas shown and described.
9. In a repeating fire-arm, the stock F, provided with the inclined tube N, in combination with the spring 0, the cap P, and the springs R R,- placed one in advance of the other in the bottom of a cartridgereceivingS recess at the juncture of said tube with the breech-block, substantially as shown and described.
