nited rates hat-cut JET ORIFICE ASSEMBLY Clyde E. Jones, Terre Haute, Ind. Application March 4, 1958, Serial No. 719,145 Claims. (Cl. 138-44) This invention relates in general to new and useful improvements in pulp digesters, and more specifically to an improved discharge valve assembly for the discharger of the pulp digester system.
After pulp has passed from the digester, it passes into a discharger which in turn feeds the digested pulp into a blow pipe. In order to control the flow of the pulp, there is provided a discharge valve. However, this discharge valve has numerous disadvantages. First, it is a complicated device and therefore expensive to manufacture and maintain. Secondly, the design of existing discharge valves is such that the pulp is continuously clogging the valve which requires the cleaning of the valve and of course, the shut-down of the pulp digester system.
j It is therefore the primary object of this invention to provide an improved discharge valve for the discharger of a pulp digester system, the discharge valve being so constructed whereby clogging thereof is eliminated.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved discharge valve for pulp digester systems, the discharge valve being mounted on the discharger of the pulp di esting system and including a steam supply for the orifice thereof whereby the steam facilitates the movement of the pulp through the discharge valve and prevents clogging thereof.
Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved discharge valve for use in conjunction with a pulp digesting system discharger, the valve being of an extremely simple construction and formed of readily obtainable material so as to be economically feasible in its manufacture and at the same time having replaceable wear components whereby it may be readily overhauled and salvaged.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved discharge valve for the discharger of a pulp digester system, the discharge valve including an orifice,
the orifice having a steam jet opening thereinto, the
steam jet providing a supply of steam under pressure to be added to the pulp passing through the orifice whereby the flow of the pulp is facilitated and clogging of the orifice is prevented.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in Which:
Figure l is a schematic view of the pulp digesting system and shows the general locale of the discharge valve which is the subject of this invention;
Figure 2 isan enlarged perspective view of the discharge valve as viewed from the discharger end thereof and shows the general arrangement of the components thereof;
' Figure 3. is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken through the discharge valve and shows the coupling thereof to both the discharger and blow pipe of the pulp digesting system; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged end view of the blow pipe end of the discharge valve.
Referring now to Figure l in particular, it will be seen that there is illustrated a pulp digesting system which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 10. The pulp digesting system is that which is presently manufactured by the Black-Clawson Company in its Pandia, Inc. Division at Hamilton, Ohio. Inasmuch as the various components of the pulp digester system are labeled and with the exception of the discharge valve, the blow pipe and the discharger the remainder of the pulp digesting system plays no part in the present invention, the specific components of the pulp digesting system will not be set forth in detail.
The pulp digesting system 10 does, however, include a discharger 12 which is connected to a digester and which supplies digested pulp to a blow pipe 14. In order to control the flow of the digested pulp from the discharger 12 into the blow pipe 14, there is provided a discharge valve. The discharge valve which has been in use in the pulp digesting system has been replaced by the discharge valve which is the subject of this invention, the discharge valve being referred to in general by the reference numeral 16. p
Referring now to Figures 2, 3 and 4 in particular, it will be seen that the discharge valve 16 includes anelon gated valve body 18 which is provided at the left end thereof with a blow pipe connecting flange 20 and at the right end thereof with a discharger connecting flange 22. The blow pipe 14 is provided with a connecting flange 24 at the end thereof which opposes the connecting flange 29 and which is sealed relative thereto by means of a gasket 26. The flanges 20 and 24 are connected together by relatively circumferentially spaced bolts 28 which pass through suitable links 30 in the connecting flange 20; Incidentally, the connecting flange 28 is recessed as at 32 to receive the gasket 2s.
The discharger 12 also includes a mounting flange 34. The connecting flange 22 is recessed as at 36 to receive the mounting flange 34 and thus provides a projecting end portion 38. The connecting flangef22 is also re-f cessed as at i; to receive a gasket 42Which seals'the connecting flange 22 to the mounting flange 34. Circumferentially spaced bolts 42 extend through the connecting flange 22 into the mounting flange 34 to mount the discharge valve 16 on the discharger 12. The bolts 42 pass through suitable links 44 in the connecting flange 22.
In order to prevent wear to the valve body 18, there is provided a wear sleeve 45. The wear sleeve 45. is removable and may be replaced when worn excessively.
Secured to the projecting portion 38 is a circular orifice plate .6. The orifice plate 46 is removably mounted on the connecting flange 22 by means of a plurality of fasteners 48. it is to be noted that the orifice plate 46 is disposed eccentric to the valve body 18.
The orifice plate 46 has a bore 50 therethrough which is disposed concentric with the bore of the wear sleeve 45. Seated in the bore 59 is an orifice forming sleeve 52. The sleeve 52 is formed of a wear resisting material, such as a suitable carbide, and is replaceable when excessively worn. The size of the orifice forming sleeve 52 controls the rate of discharge through the discharge valve 16.
The connecting flange 22 includes a steam inlet fitting The steam inlet fitting 54 is in the form of a bore 56 through the connecting flange 22, the bore having the outer end thereof in the fornr of an internally thread- Patented Apr. 5, 1960 ed. portion. Threadedly engaged in the internally steam passage 66 at right angles. Theouter end of the steam passage68 is closed by means of a plug 7%. lncidentally it is pointed outwat this time that the orifice plate 46 is of. a, size to be received in a discharge bore 72 of the discharger 12.
The orifice forming sleeve 52 is provided with a jet 74. The, jet 74 extends normal to the longitudinal axis of the orifice forming sleeve 52 and opens thereinto.
. The jet 74'is. aligned with the inner end of the steam passage 68for receiving steam therefrom.
It is to be understood that the steam supplied to the discharge valve'lfi is at a pressure slightly greater than the internal pressure of the discharger 12. As pulp is discharged from the discharger 12 into the discharge valve 16, it passes into the orifice forming sleeve 52 which controls the flow of the pulp The steam striking the pulp at right angles and exiting through the jet 74 at high speedv has. a tendency to break up the pulp and prevent any clogging thereof. The steam escaping freely.
into the wear sleeve 45 causes the accelerated. flow of the pulp through the orifice plate 46 and thus assures theabsence of clogging of the orifice forming sleeve 52. At' this time',.it is pointed out that although steam is continuously fed into the discharge valve 16, the amount of. steam used' is relatively slight and is not a factor.
From the foregoing description of the discharge valve 16, it will be seen that it is of an extremely simple construction. Further, there are no moving parts and the only parts subject to wear are replaceable. Also, because of the particular configuration of the construction of the discharge valve 16, continued flow of pulp therethrough is assured.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction-and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and connecting flange,v a steam passage in said orifice plate, said steam passage extending between and communiv eating said steam inletfitting with said orifice, said orifice having a longitudinal axis, said steam passage opening into said orifice normal to said axis.
