ADJUSTABLE LEG FOR FOLDING LOUNGES.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT S. NEVVBY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
ADJUSTABLE LEG FOR FOLDING LOUNGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,789, dated June 19, 1883.
Application filed January 30. 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. N EWBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at In dianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Legs for Folding Lounges; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspecification.
The invention consists in a cap so adjusted to the upper part of the leg attached to the folding part of a folding lounge. that the leg is stationary when in position for use, and when the lounge is folded the leg drops down out of sight. The cap is also reversible, so that it can be attached to either end of the lounge. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the cap as attached to the leg when in position for use, the dotted lines showing it when the lounge is folded; Fig. 2, the cap as attached to the leg in the reversed position from that shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a back' view of cap as attached to leg.
A represents the cap, which is attached to lounge by screws db 0 c, and to leg B by-pivot d, which passes through leg B and works in a right-angular slot, 0, in top of cap A. Cap A is also provided with a semicircular slot, f, in which leg B works. The corners g g of slot f serve as braces for leg B, as shown in Fig. 1. The working of pivot d in slot (2, as shown in Fig. 1, permits of a perpendicular adjustment of leg B on screw a when in position for use, and a horizontal adjustment on screw 6, by which means leg B drops down out of sight when the lounge is folded, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that in either position leg B is stationary, and when the leg is in use the lounge can be moved without changing the position of leg B. To facilitate this movement leg B may be provided with a common caster, 71/; or, if preferred, a rubber foot may be used instead of a caster. Cap A and leg B may be made of cast-iron or other suitable material. 7
I am aware that prior to my invention lounge-legs have been used by fastening the leg with a rivet or bolt to a circular casting which is attached to the side of the lounge, and for this I make no claim 5 but Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Cap A, with angular slot c, semicircular slot f, and screws c b c c, substantially as shown, for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, in an adjustable loungeleg, of cap A, attached to leg B, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified. ALBERT S. NEVVBY.
