6 Claims. (Cl. 189-65) This invention relates in general to improvements in window construction, and more particularly to improvements in sash construction for awning type windows.
The construction of an awning type window is such that the construction of all of the sash thereof are identical with the exception of the uppermost sash which is special due to thenecessity of providing for engagement with a drip flange of the window frame. This requires the manufacture of different types of sash as well as the stocking thereof.
It is therefore the primary object of this invention to provide a sash converting member which may be easily secured to a regular sash to convert such regular sash to an upper sash whereby only regular sash need be manufactured and stored.
It is to be understood that the term regular sash is to refer to all sash other than upper sash throughout the description of the invention.
Another object of this invention is to provide a sash converting member for converting regular sash into upper sash, the sash converting member being so constructed whereby it may be easily slid into locking engagement with a regular sash without requiring the use of any tools whatsoever.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel method of converting regular sash into upper sash, which method includes the simple expediency of sliding a sash converting member into engagement with a header of a regular sash.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will become more apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same embodying novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of an awning type window as viewed from the interior side thereof, the window 'having an upper sash utilizing the sash converting member which is the subject of this invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the upper portion of the window of Figure 1 along section line 22 and shows the general cross section of the sash converting member and the relationship thereof relative to the sash to which it is attached; and,
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary exploded perspective of the sash converting member and the sash to which it is intended to be attached, a portion of the sash being broken away and shown in section.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that there is illustrated in Figure 1 an awning type window which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 10. The window includes a frame 12 in which are mounted upper and lower sashes 14 and 16.
The lower sash 16 is of a regular construction and includes a regular sash frame 18 having mounted there- 2,767,813 Patented Oct. 23, 1956 "ice ina glazing 20. The sash frame 18 is formed of a pair of stiles 22 connected at their upper ends by an upper rail 24 and a lower rail 26.
The upper sash 14 is formed of a regular sash 28 identical to the sash 16 and a sash converting member 30.. The regular sash 28 includes a regular sash frame 32 having mounted therein glazing 34. In addition to jambs 36 and a lower rail 38, the sash frame 32 includes a upper rail 40.
The upper rail 40 is generally H-shaped in cross section and includes an outer vertical flange 42 and an inner vertical flange 44 connected by a web 46. The inner flange 44 projects above the outer flange 42 and has an outwardly directed projection 48. The projection 48 is provided with an outwardly opening groove 50 whose lower extremity is coplanar with the upper edge of the outer flange 42. The upper flange 42 is provided with an inwardly directed projection 52 at the upper edge thereof.
The sash converting member 30 is of a generally L- shaped cross section and includes a vertical flange 54 l and ahorizontal flange-56. The horizontal flange 56 has depending therefrom an outwardly directed hook 58. Also, the vertical flange 54 has an inwardly ofiset upper portion 60.
When it is desired to convert a regular sash 28 into an upper sash, such as the upper sash 14, the sash converting member 30 is driven endwise into the upper rail 40. When the sash 28 is provided with the sash converting member 30, the horizontal flange 56 overlies the outer flange 42 and has the free edge thereof seated in the groove 50. The vertical flange 54 extends upward- 1y as a continuation of the outer flange 42 and the sash converting member 30 is retained in place by engagement of the hook 58 beneath the projection 52.
As is best illustrated in Figure 2, the offset portion 60 of the vertical flange 54 is so positioned whereby it is properly engaged with a weather stripping element 62 carried by a depending drip flange 64 of the window frame 12.
Since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a window structure wherein a plurality of horizontally swinging sash are disposed in a window frame and wherein the sash are substantially identical in construction and with each including an upper rail having inner and outer flanges, a strip slidably engaging the upper rail of the uppermost sash and having locking engagement with the rail in a manner to form an upper extension of the outer flange, the said strip adapted to have a weathering engagement with a Weatherstrip carried by an overhanging drip shield formed upon the window frame.
2. The device as in claim 1, wherein the flanges of the rail are vertically disposed, the inner flange being provided with an outwardly facing groove that is aligned with an upper edge of the outer flange, the outer flange having an inwardly directed projection along its upper edge, the said strip being L-shaped and including a vertical flange and a horizontal flange, the said strip being disposed in overlying relation to the outer flange of the rail and with the horizontal flange engaging the said groove, the said strip forming an upper extension for the outer flange of the rail and means formed on the horizontal flange for interlocking engagement with the projection of the outer flange.

The m ination with a window having .a frame and a plurality of substantially identical sash horizontally pivoted in the frame and with each sash including an upper rail having inner and outer flanges, means detachably connected with the upper rail of either sash whereby to convert such sash to an upper sash, the inner flange having a forwardly opening groove and 'the ,outer flange having an inwardly directed projection, the said means comprising an L-shaped member having a vertical flange and a horizontal flange, the horizontal flange having its marginal edge seated within the groove and overlying the outer flange of the rail to be flush therewith, the said vertical flange providing an upper extension for the outer flange of the rail, interlocking means between the horizontal flange and the inwardly directed projection whereby to hold the extension member in overlying flush engagement with :the outer flange of the rail, the said extension adapted 10 have a weathering engagement with a Weatherstrip carried by a drip shield formed on the window frame.
4. The structure according to claim .3, wherein the interlocking means includes a hook formed upon the horizontal flange that has hooking engagement beneath the inward projection.
5. The structure according to claim 3, wherein the upper part .of the vertical .flange is offset inwardly, the
said L-shaped member being slidably engaged with the rail in a horizontal manner for disposing the marginal edge of the horizontal flange within the groove and the interlocking means in underlying engagement with the inward extension.
6. In combination with a window device including a frame and a plurality of horizontally pivoted sash disposed in the frame, the sash being identical in construction and including each an upper rail having inner and outer flange members, means detachably engaged with an upper rail whereby to convert either sash for use as an uppermost sash, .the said means constituting an upper extension for the outer flange whereby to weather against a Weatherstrip formed upon the Window frame when the sash are shifted to a closed position.
