' CARTRIDGE CASE Filed May 11, 1948 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. GEO/Q05 JENSEN ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 4, 1951 UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE CARTRIDGE CASE George Jensen, Denver, Colo.
Application May 11, 1948, Serial No. 26,294
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a cartridge case and has for its principal object the provision of a cartridge case which can be constructed entirely from a single piece of material which will not only form the sides, bottom and top of the case but will also form belt loops for attaching the case to the belt without requiring additional parts or pieces.
Another object of the invention is to provide a case construction which can be formed entirely of leather and which will provide separate partitions to prevent the cartridges from contacting each other.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and emciency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective front view illustrating the improved cartridge case in the closed position;
Fig. 2 is a similar rear view of the case illustrating the position of a carrying belt in broken line;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improved case in the open position;
Fig. 4 is a detail view of a cartridge separator employed in the improved case;
Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of parts of the separator of Fig. 4;
Fig. '7 illustrates the blank of material from which the case is formed; and
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal view through the improved cartridge case.
The enclosure of the improved case is formed from a single blank of relatively thick material such as sole or tooling leather of approximately /32 of an inch in thickness. The leather is blanked out in the form shown in Fig. 7 to form a top flap [0, a back portion ll, inner end members l2, outer end members l3, belts loops M, a bottom portion 15, inner end tabs l6 and front portion IT.
The top flap I is divided from the back portion l2 by means of folding cuts [8. The bottom portion I is divided from the back portion II and from the front portion I! by means of folding notches l9. Rivet holes 20 and 24 are punched for receiving assembly rivets 2| and 23.
A male fastener 25 is attached to the front portion ll and a female fastener 26 is mounted on the flap [0. Each belt loop I4 is provided with a belt slot 22 parallel with its edge.
The enclosure is formed by folding the blank of Fig. 7 along the fold lines indicated by the broken lines in Fig. '7. The two end tabs [8 are folded upwardly as shown in Fig. 8. The front and back portions II and H are then folded upwardly at each side of the end tabs. The two end portions l2 are folded across the inner end portions i2 and secured by means of a single rivet 2| extending through each of the rivet holes 2%. The belt loops I4 are then folded around the corners of the enclosure and secured to the back portions I! by means of rivets 23 through the rivet holes 24.
The front top flap I0 is then folded downwardly over the front portion ll and is detachably secured thereto by means of the fasteners 25 and 26. The cartridges are maintained separated by means of a separator, illustrated in detail in Fig. 4, consisting of a separating member 21 provided with inwardly extending parallel, uniformly spaced notches 28 in its opposite longitudinal edges for the purpose of holding separating members 29 in place.
Each separating member 29 is formed from relatively thick flexible leather and is provided with a vertical center slot 30 with which a diagonal cut 31 connects.
By flexing the separators 29 they can be slipped over the member 21 into the slots 28 to form a plurality of laterally extending spaced separators as shown in Fig. 4.
The entirely assembled separator is positioned Within the enclosure and rests upon the upturned end tabs [6 as shown in Fig. 8. It can be allowed to rest simply by gravity or friction or it may be tied into place by means of thread ties 32 through the front and back of the enclosure.
It will be noted that when the belt loops I4 are bent back into place the fold line along the slots 22 causes the latter to open up as shown in Fig. 2 so that the users belt, indicated at 33, may be passed through the slots beneath the tabs l4.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, Within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention;
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:
A cartridge case comprising: a single blank 01 relatively thick, flexible material; a top flap; a back portion; two inner end members; two outer end members; two belt loops; a bottom portion; two end tabs; a front portion, all of said flaps, portions, loops, tabs, and members being formed from said single blank of material, said front and back portions extending in parallel relation, said outer end members extending over said inner end members-and acting to separate said front and back portions; anattachment rivet securing each outer end member to each inner end member, said belt loops extending over the rear face of said back portion; attachment rivets securing said belt loops to said back portion, said belt loops being slotted for the passage -of a belt at their points of folding, said top flap extending over the top of said case and downwardlyover said front portion; an attachment device securing said top flap to said front portion, said end tabs extending upwardly inside of said inner end 20 members; and a cartridge-separating member supported between said front and back portions upon said end tabs.
