Application October 25, 1933, serial No.5695,199*' 3 Claims; (01. 183 -22) The invention relates to an air conditioning device and more especially to an air washing and humidifying attachment for hotair furnaces.
The primary object of theinvention is the provision of an attachment of this character wherein the-same is arranged between the cold air inletand the hot air furnace "so that the cold air can be washed and humidified for the conditioningoi the heated air'distribut'ed within an enclosure, with the-result" that such heated air will be relieved from dust and assured of proper moisture, the attachment being of novel construction.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character wherein the same is applicable to warm air furnaces, either those having heat distributing conduits or to a pipeless furnace operating as a gravity warm air system, and the air entering the furnace for distribution will be thoroughly washed and humidified without the aid of mechanical equipment and constantly during the working of such furnace, the attachment being also applicable for use as a cooling system for an enclosure.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eificient in its operation, requiring no changes in the furnace make-up when to be Ii used therewith, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is .a fragmentary elevation of a warm air furnace showing the air conditioning attachment constructed in accordance with the invention in association therewith.
Figure 2 is a top plan view partly in section of the attachment showing a portion of the furnace .Referring to the drawings in detail, A; desig' nates generally a portion of a warm air furnace, which is of any standard construction, and B the cold air inlet pipe which leads from asuitable point without an enclosure, these being conventional, while C identifies generally the air conditioning attachment constituting the present invention andhereinafterfully described.
I The air conditioning attachment C comprises a-hollow body forming a bootlO connected at the nipple 11 with the lower end of the cold air pipe B and at the flanged end 12 with the furnace A for communication therewith. This boot 10 has an inclined bottom 13, while formed at the top of said boot between the furnace A and pipe B, but next to the latter, is an upwardly tapered crown 14 serving as a spray channel 15 provided at its center apex with an atomizer plate directly overhanging a spray nozzle 17 arranged centrally of a water pipe or tube 18 horizontally disposed crosswise of the boot 10, the end 19 being connected with a suitable water supply, this end being fitted with a suitable filtering medium, generally indicated at 20, to avoid clogging of the jet or spray nozzle 17 and permitting the removal of any foreign particles from said pipe 18.
At the lowermost point of the body 10 of the boot and into which merges the inclined bottom 13 is a catch basin 21 and overhanging the same is a dust and dirt eliminator including a series of vertically disposed Z-shaped plates 22, these being evenly or uniformly spaced from each other and suspended from a lid or cover 23 for a top opening 24 in the body 10 so that the eliminator can be readily removed for cleansing purposes, the opening 24 being located in the body 10 next to the furnace A.
Leading from one end of the catch basin 21 is a drain pipe 25 for the removal of the Water contained within said basin and its discharge to a sewer (not shown),
In the working of the attachment, water delivered by the pipe 18 through the nozzle 17 will be directed against the plate 16 for the atomizing of the stream for the forming of a mist and the directing thereof downwardly from the channel 15 onto the inclined bottom 13 of the body 10 of the boot, the cold air to the furnace A being admitted thereto through pipe B and the body 10 of the boot and such mist washes and humidifies this cold air while the eliminator removes any particles of dust or dirt as contained by the air which might have gotten through the mist. Thus it will be seen that the cold air admitted to the furnace will be thoroughly washed and humidified and at the same time dust and dirt eliminated therefrom so that the warm air created by the furnace A will be properly conditioned prior to distribution to an enclosure for heating purposes thereof.
The plate 16 functions as an atomizer while the sloping sides 26 of the crown 14 function as deflectors directing a spray or mist downwardly into the body 10, as should be apparent in Figure 4 of the drawings.
What is claimed is:
1. In a, warm air furnace having a cold air inlet pipe, an air conditioning attachment comprising a boot communicating the cold air pipe with the furnace and having an inclined bottom and a transverse opening in the top next to the furnace, an upwardly tapered crown to said boot, an atomizer plate at the apex of said crown, a spray nozzle immediately beneath said atomizer plate, and en eliminator removably fitted in the opening and having a series of uniformly spaced vertically disposed substantially Z-shaped plates depending within the boot but slightly removed from the bottom of the latter at its lowermost point.
2. In a warm air furnace having a cold air inlet pipe, an air conditioning attachment comprising a boot communicating the cold air pipe with the furnace and having an inclined bottom and a transverse opening in the top next to the furnace, an upwardly tapered crown to said boot, an atomizer plate at the apex of said crown, a spray nozzle immediately beneath said atomizer plate, an eliminator removably fitted in the opening and having a series of uniformly spaced vertically disposed substantially Z-shaped plates depending within the boot but slightly removed from the bottom of the latter at its lowermost point, and a catch basin immediately beneath said eliminator and into which merges the inclined bottom.
3; In a warm air furnace having a cold air inlet pipe, an air conditioning attachment comprising a'boot communicating the cold air pipe with the furnace and having an inclined bottom and a transverse opening in the top next to the furnace, an upwardly tapered crown to said boot, an atomizer plate at the apex of said crown, a, spray nozzle immediately beneath said atomizer plate, an eliminator removably fitted in the opening and having a series of uniformly spaced vertically disposed substantially Z-shaped plates depending within the boot but slightly removed from the bottom of the latter at its lowermost point, a catch basin immediately beneath said eliminator and into which merges the inclined bottom, means for supplying water to the spray nozzle, and means for draining the catch basin.
